My new 20gal reef set up.

Man im not sure. What the ammonia at to start? I think your nitrates should be higher but you do have the skimmer so im not sure. If you wanna be certain, buy pure ammonia and dose to 2ppm. If its 0 in 24 hrs you should be good. I know on my 2 tanks i had a massive diatom bloom after the cycle.

Thanks. I dont have the skimmer running. Just the AC70s with filter floss. No light running either.

I'd dose the pure ammonia just to be sure, that's really the only way. If you had high nitrates and 0 ammonia it would be a different story but this ones hard to say. My honest opinion just from looking at the pics you posted on the 18th, I'd say your cycle isn't finished, but again you haven't had the light on so its a tough one. . Off topic , but "tough", that looks weird to me. Its supposed to say "tuff" but spelled correctly.

If your cycle is done 0, but your nitrates should be higher than 1. Much higher. Should be like 20-40, somewhere around there, and especially so since you have almost no algae in the tank. If you had a lot of algae, and low nitrates you could make the case that the algae absorbed it, so it's not registering on the test, but since you don't have any, nitrate should still be in the water collumn

thanks, crap I am all off then.

Don't get your hopes up, you may not be. That's why I suggested doing the pure ammonia does to 2ppm. If its gone in 24 hours your good, if its not then you have your cycle started. Only other way to know for sure is to add a dead shrimp or fish flakes or something but that will take a lot longer than dosing straight ammonia.

I ghost fed 2 times once at 13 days and then at 17 days. Fish flakes

I agree. Ammonia will be 0 if cycle is complete and nitrates should be higher than 1. Bring Ammonia up to 2ppm then check ammonia and nitrite in 24 hrs. If both are 0 then you are cycled.

Ok I read the nitrate test wrong. I am at 20. The test kit said to divide my original number. Not sure why.

So. ..
Nitrate is 20
Nitrite 0
Ammonia - <0.25

I have something on my sand bed. its spots of blood red. I have no clue.

I wouldn't mind trying for the weight of a 20..mines a 60 with a 30 gallon sump. I'd be afraid to trust my carpentry with that much weight.

LoL. Building a stand is honestly super easy , even with basic skills. Just use a miter saw, and set it to 0 degrees to get all your cuts straight. Then screw the thing together. The vast majority of the common stand templates are vastly overbuilt anyways, so even if you mess up a tad, it will be perfectly fine. I've seen 125 gallon stands built with nothing but 1x2's hold up fine. First stand I ever built was for my 55, and I used 4x4's in the corner. After researching it months later, stand could prolly hold a 500 gallon tank. Biggest concern is with twisting of the wood. You could stick a tank with nothing but a vertical 2x4 in each corner and it would hold fine. But if you go nudge that tank , it's gonna collapse cause the wood can shift. That's the biggest thing to avoid.

I reworked the AC70 skimmer mod. I ordered a SUNSUN/Aquatop replacement intake tube with skimmer. I got the idea from my freshwater set up.

I paid $6 dollars for it. I used a pvc reducer to reduce the intake tube to the AC70 intake tube.

The skimmer has a self adjusting skimmer neck. WORKS AWESOME!

this is the best sump-less reef design ive ever seen. I really hope this thing rock and rolls for you because it looks sooo good. time will tell, but I think you may have convinced us die hard sump guys that there might be another way. Have you tested a power failure yet? The aqua clears lose prime after outage unless you're holding something from us that you've already done!!!! great job though!!

awesome thanks.

I have a back up battery system. My ACs actually power right back, no priming needed.

My algae has stated after a month.

My test results are

Nitrate- 18
Nitrite- 0
Ammonia- 0
PH- 8.5

Is there anything I should do for the algae? its not bad, its on the rock.

are the proteins that are skimmed in the skimmer on the surface of the tank water?

The reason i am asking is that my skimmer is in the AC70 that pulls from under the surface of the water, My other AC70 with filter media pulls from the surface and the bottom of the tank. Should I have the skimmer in the AC70 that has the surface skimmer?

thanks
