MAJOR PUMP MAINTENANCE I was able to talk a couple of local reefers to come over and help tear apart, and clean most every pump running on all of my tanks. 9 Blue Lines, 9 Quiet Ones, 5 Mags, and 4 Eheims. Mike & Dustin had no idea of what they got themselves into........After I got out of the way and let Dustin take the pumps off the systems, things went a little smoother. Mike took them apart and put them together and to my surprise, they all ran when they were put pack together!!!!!!! Ran all of the submersible pumps through a vinegar bath pictured below. I was amazed at how clean a number of the Blue Lines were for having run in their systems for up to two years without any cleaning. The Eheims on the Deltec Skimmer were spotless having run just about a year now with no cleaning. The Eheims on the H&S had a few issues on the first, so we stopped with the other two and ordered some new spindles & washers that were showing tremendous wear in a little over a years time. Took nearly 4 1/2 hours, but got them all cleaned up and put back & up and running.

This leaves me on my own tomorrow to clean all of the Maxi Jets, Tunzies, & Vortech's. Think I will just run them in the vinegar bath for a while and them place back in the tank.

Biggest problem turned out to be having to drain the 3 largest sumps as there wasn't a shut off valve between the pumps & sump. (Design mistake...)

Wasn't nearly as bad as I thought that it might be, but I am glad that it is all over!!!!

Just amazing what a little water & vinegar can do for pumps...

its always good to have friends come help. will you be adding ball valves on the sump now? about how long do you run them in vinegar bath?

There were space issues on all but one of the Blue Lines so a shut off doesn't have room. We ran the submersibles for about 15 minutes in the bath and then 5 or 10 for the rinse. Did a frantastic job. I'm just going to use the bath for the smaller pumps tomorrow so it should go rather quickly I hope?

Why would vinegar dissolve o rings? Vinegar isn't a petroleum based product.

Acids make rubber a lot weaker. An vinegar is an acid. Never said vinegar was petro. Sorry just a known fact.

Maybe this will be the year for Bill & the boys!

Special Treat for the tanks...ordered in some live marine feeder shrimp and took a picture of whats left before I feed the other tanks. Should have set up the video camera as is was a hoot to watch them try and catch these little guys.
