My new 600 gallon reef

You are correct. Smaller ones are much less common to find these days due to cross breeding within the species in and surrounding x-mas island. The large ones are somewhat avaialble, but still an uncommon fish. Those that are 2.5"-4" and ideal for most of us "regular" reef tank owners, well they are real expensive IF you can find one. I have only seen about 5 in the Toronto area in the past 4-5 years, +/- of course. I have had one on order for over 3 years from one LFS - just one of those fish you see on a list but never receive I guess. Last time I saw one for sale in Toronto was about 2.5 years ago. Pleased to say he is in my display tank. :)

I've been told the same, a 2~3" is more expensive than 6"+. The one that I bought was listed as a large, and they had a show size for $30. more but I went with the large. It came from the X-Mas Isles.

Cougarman what kind of tang is that and where can I get one?

Lunchbucket

It's a Fowleri Tang. Acanthurus fowleri is the scientific name. It's an expensive fish. Not sure where to get it in the states. But a local dealer Lucas at Oceans alive in Toronto got 4 or 5 in this week. It's only the 2nd time I've seen them for sale. Both times by the same dealer. It's definately the best looking tang I've ever seen. Real friendly like a Dussumiers or Vlamingi. I'll post some better pics once I get him into my main tank with the good lights.

Feel free to post a picture on my thread. You don't see many pictures of them. I've looked for them for several years but if they were available, they were too much money, (at least more than I wanted to spend for a fish). This one finally came up on the list at a fair price and I jumped on it right away. I see the next day, both the large and show were no longer on the availability list.

Project for this afternoon is to get an accurate head count in the tank. Results to be posted early this evening. Still time to get you guesses it before the results are posted. I know that I will probably open up a big can of worms but what the heck....

that achilles is gorgeous, by far my favorite tang! I am very jealous!
I spent a lot of time cleaning the tank yesterday and noticed that your attention is drawn to that fish in the tank. Part of it is due to the size, but more than that, I think that it is the coloration that catches you eye the most. Will be nice when someone other than myself looks at the tank in person and get their impression. The Black tang almost looks as if it is a shadow in the tank. Yesterday, it was spending most of the time in the back of the tank against the black acrylic, Tough to see him there....

You and me both...I'll bet it looks much better in person. Can hardly wait for additional pictures.

A local dealer gets huge achilles from time to time. but they never eat and rarely survive. Yours looks to be in good shape Goodwin9. Is he grazing at all? Hopefully he will mimic your other tangs and begin eating. I've never seen juveniles for sale. I dont know why. I always find the juveniles are easy to get to eat.

I never got your PM Michika. Lucas also has Bariene Tangs aswell incase you're interested in ordering from him.

Will work on better pics - my cheap camera is ok for corals but I can not get great fish pics. I included a couple below. This is the one in my main display. I have another 3.5-4" black tang in another tank, it will be up for sale again if not picked up this weekend.

So what is way to much money in the US for a black tang? I have heard as much as $800 for the small ones. Larger ones being less of course because the are easier to find, and average folk can not properly accomodate a big one.

Thing are generally cheaper in Canada than in the US (except Canadian beer for some reason....)

Dave I gotta give another one a try. This time he's going straight into the big tank. I dont know what I was thinking.

You were right on about the contents of my PM. I'm going to assume it was lost in space.

That is quite the traffic jam going on there. Is this feeding time, or are you just walking by the tank?

The fish think it is feeding time...all of the time. I was standing on the steps heading into the basement to take the picture and they all spotted me. A person would think that I under feed them.....right Marc
