My New Crocea

This is my first clam. I think that she is doing pretty well, but what do I know.


What are your thoughts? Does the clam look healthy? (I hope I ID'd it properly, too ) She hasn't moved from the spot where I placed her (I got her last weekend).

The first day in the tank (7/6/08)

The second day, she burrowed deeper into the sand (7/7/08)

My sleeper goby sometimes drops a few grains of sand on her, I blew it off with a turkey baster and she got a little wizzed off, retracted her mantle but did not snap shut. She opened up soon afterward. Is it normal that she didn't seal up? Maybe didn't "feel" threatened enough to snap shut?

When I blew the water on top of her with the turkey baster, I accidentally blew some sand away from her base, which is why she doesn't appear to be as deep in the sand in this and the following pictures.

So whatcha think? Healthy? Happy?

It's about the size of a baseball-- maybe a bit larger, actually.

Yup. I only have 4 48" bulbs, as it is all I could fit under my canopy, the way it was constructed. None of my corals seem to mind, though.

I would just leave it alone. It will blow itself off if it gets annoyed. Clams dont like to be disturbed. Keep an eye on the potters angel.. it is a potential clam predator. You may have to move it up to a rock if it starts to bleach (maybe not enough light on the bottom plus croceas live in rock in the wild). If you do move it wait a week or two in between moves. Nice clam! It looks healthy.

Crocea clams are rock dwelling, so make sure it is sitting on something other than just sand.

good to know... right now the clam is just on the sand. If she seems content, should I risk p***ing her off and moving her?

It will be fine. Give it a nice nook to feel safe in, and she should open back up in no time. Mine opened up right away and stayed open, except for the few short times it moved around a tad to adjust position.

Croceas don't often take well to substrate being tossed on/in them. The irritation can sometimes lead to further problems (possibly death) if you can move it off the substrate that is usually best.

Either way - very good looking crocea! Congrats on your first clam
