My new DIY skimmer

Forgot to add something. I was showing my buddy at the LFS some pics of this yesterday, he asked me where the water level is in the riser? I told him that was why i'm so impressed with this little skimmer, the water level is about 1/2" down int he main box. The riser is all foam, no water.:D Just wanted to share that peice of info.

D@MN!!!! That is good. I actually have an AquaC and my foam is nothing near that. I have the EV90, which is smaller.

Do you have any plans on this at all?
Something like a step by step process.
It sure would be a great help in building this.

If you read about 4 posts up you'll see the answer.:D

Thanks,
I saw that but it is very non descriptive.
I was looking more along the lines of a parts list (pipes, plastic sizing , etc..)and what dimentions they would be.
Even if you drew a picture and made a scan that would help.

I am clueless as to how tall and lengths. I saved what Dimensions you gave and all the pictures from the above posts.

Reason I am asking is I was told to get a better skimmer and when I saw this and the reviews you got I thought this would be a cheep way to go. If you can give more info on building this that would be a great help.

Have you thought of patent for this. It appears to be a one of a kind even if it is modeled after a manufatures. YOu did do modifications and build from scratch so I would think you could get right to it.

Heck you may get to quit working if it takes off.

Well it's not a dowdraft either. Anyway here are the dimensions, this is just stuff i had access too without spending an arm and a leg on 6 foot lengthes.
Box dimensions 5 3/8" W x 8 3/8 L x 6 3/4 H
First riser 4 1/2" OD x 7" H
Second riser 2 1/2" OD x 3 3/4" H
Collection cup 4 1/2" x 4 3/4" H
The injector riser is 2 1/2" OD x 2 1/2" H, but i think i would make it 4" or so next time. The reason being is as soon as the injector comes in contact with water the foam decreases to about half. This way you'll have more of an adjustment of water hieght, also it seems to work the best when the injector outlet is even with the air inlet. Remember the skimmate that this is pulling out is from a 25gal bin of 15LBS of LR 3 coral frags and one fish. So pretty much no bio load, so i'm happy so far. We'll see in a few more days.:D

I don't know how much more discriptive i can get, all the dimensions are listed. I could try tonight to make up a plan of some sort, but i'm not promising anything.

Nice skimmer! Great design -

Where are the holes on the skimmer where air can enter?

Thanks,

Jamie

Thanks for the effort but any other info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
The black box is kinda hard to see what all is involved.

I will be pateint for what ever else you can provide.
This defianly fits my budget for costs.
Brian

This is all that is in the "black box". :D

The little white valve on the injector riser is where the air is sucked in. Second or third pic down. Actually i took the valve right out, it's now just a 1/4" hole and works perfect.

Hey Clinton. Did you make the foamer (clover looking piece) or is it off of an old skimmer. I remember seeing a thread somewhere on how to make one but cant seem to find it. :( Any help would be appreciated !!!

Sorry, nother question. How is your collection cup connected? Is it like twist on with an o-ring in between?

Yep.:)
Here you go.

Thx Clinton, nice collection cup assembly. Does it leak at all? One more question about your injector. Where does the hole go for the air intake/mixture? I cant tell on your picks provided. Also what type of fitting is that made of again? cpvc 1/2 inch reducer?

Jason K.

Great job on the collection cup too. It's kind of dark looking at the collection cup but does the O-rings have a groove for it and I can't see how it's twisted on from the picture.

No the collection cup doesn't leak. Why would it?
The injector is made out of 1/2" PVC, it is pushed into a 1/2" slip - thread adaptor. The air inlet is level with the bottom of the injector, 1/4" hole. Which you can see on the third pic down on the first page.

The riser has a groove for the O-ring, the collection cup does not. The ring you see on the collection cup is just reef safe O-ring lub.:D It was too snug of a fit without.
