Hey AGU. Is that the dual 18 watt fixture?? If so I purchased one of those around 6 months ago but it blew on me rather quickly. I only paid 47 bucks for it at petmart so I never bothered to try and fix it. Anyhow the bulbs have been used for about 2 weeks tops. If you want them they are yours. I also kept the little reflector thinking I would make a retro out of it someday. might as well go to someone that might use it

On the new tank the overflow doesn't "go" anywhere, the tank isn't drilled and there's no sump. It's strictly to surface skim and hide equipment. It had to be big enough for a powerhead and that it wouldn't run dry too fast. When I look at nanos ( or a lot of bigger tanks too ) most look like a storage container with equipment all over the tank.
Scott, Built the base and hood myself. Had the overflow made though, my acrylic skills are nonexistant. A friend in Mn is in the acrylic business as a sideline,he built it at his minimum price,

Agu, have you ran this yet. Just wondering does the water in the overflow stay even with the water in the tank or does it drop because this is where you are pumping from...I imagine it is kinda of a balance act in finding the right pump....

That is the idea behind the calfo style overflow to improve surface skimming
If i were starting over I woud go external overflow with the calfo style
over flows But I don't think many tank CO's want to do the drilling
or make that style...I like your ambition doing that project..instead of just picking up the Nano kit

It's simpler than that. Tank level stays constant, the interior of the overflow is the "sump" where water level changes. Water level only drops in the overflow.The overflow has to be able to handle pump output but that's pretty easy if you don't run a big honking pump.
Ran it with tap water and it evaporates less than a cup a day. Water level only drops in the overflow.With a quart capacity it's hypothetically good for three days not accounting for salinity changes.
Jim, Bingman made that style of overflow years ago. Instead of drilling he had a sandblasting company make the long hole in the back of the tank. fwiw

Agu, that is really cool. I have been wanting to start a nano and was going to buy one complete. But I might take on project similar to this.

Filled it with tap water and ran it for three days with the light on a timer. Evaporation was between 6 and 8 ounces a day, overflow holds a quart (32 oz).
My bigger concern was the condensation on the lights plexi cover. I have legs for the light if necessary but thought I'd see if the evap is as bad using saltwater. If I have to, one more layer of trim can be added to the hood pretty easily.

what a good idea The sand blasting... Some people were posting on the old Calfo forum....now called all things salty...
But my point probably better for another post is that we are not seeing this style coming through on tanks that are not custom made
