i have joined the club! i picked up my nikon D40 today. i'm a total noob but i just snapped some pictures when i got home...

these picture was snapped in the sport mode.

so any D40 owners out there that can share some tips and settings that work best for fish shots? or if anyone has any website they could recommend for someone to start weaning off the automatic setting that would be appreciated!

back to taking some more pictures!

Wow those are some great shots for someone who doesn't really know what they are doing. They are great for someone who does. You will go far with this.

your best advice for aqua shooting is here in the sticky in the photography forum

I hope you like your D40 as much as mine

it is a great compact, lightweight SLR camera that produces excellent IQ

thanks! i just finished shooting like another few dozen shots haha. but here's one of my flame and one of my mystery wrasse that for some odd reason i just noticed is missing part of his tail. how odd. k..done with pictures for tonight..time to do some research...

once again..these are just on that sports mode function. no manual settings at all yet...

Nice pictures but I need you to remove the URL from your watermark or I'll have to remove your images.

Thanks

thanks for the URL remark BG, I was not aware of that

NP. A copyright is completely acceptable (and recommended) it just can't be a URL.

if you want to be weaned off of automatic, read up on the zone system.. also familiarize your self with your in camera meter reader... i noticed your pictures were focused on just the fish and fuzzy on other things, if you want everthing in focus use a smaller aperature, like f11, you will need to use a slower shutter speed and a tripod, anything slower than 1/60th of a sec you will get camera movement, if you have a tripod though you can use the self timer, or invest in a cable release, if you are taking pictures of just coral use a smaller aperature (allows less light but adds depth and detail) slower shutter speed will allow more light... but just remember aperature controls depth of field, shutter controls action.... hope this helps, sorry to rant

Thanks for the pointers kyle! I am picking my D40 up on Monday. Arcab, were those photos taken with the included 18-55 lens?
