My Ocellaris breeding thread

at about what day do you put the sponge filter in the tank? mine are at 11dph and about half have the 2nd stripe but I am wondering about the water, my ammonia badge still reads 0 but I have heard that bubbble acculimateing at the top of the surface can mean to much protein's in the water. I syphon out about a gal a day and replace with NSW making sure to clean the bottom and sides each day.

any advice?

I am not sure yet. I need to see if I can get away for that weekend from family duties. With school just starting, it gets hectic for the first few weeks. It will have to be a last minute decision. I would love to go though.

My clown's latest batch of eggs is scheduled to hatch Sunday morning. Is it ok to put the frys in the same tank as the fry from the previous batch? I only have one fry left from the previous batch and will be 13 dph on Sunday morning.

Thanks

I wouldn't. The 13 day old might decide the newborns are food and attack them. I tried this before with 20 and 7 dph fry and the 7 day olds were basically killed within 24 hours. Of course I did have like seventy 20 day olds, and roughly 100 7 day olds. So 1 to whatever number of hatchlings might have better odds. My rule of thumb is, if they can't eat the same sized foods, don't do it.

Here's a look today. The guy in the 2nd photo is one of the ones with the dark tail stripe. He also has a red marking in his anal fin which is unique among all others.

Throw them a bone and get an anemone! lol. Awesome pics of the clowns.

The bioload in this growout tank is way too much. The anemone would probably not make it. I've already sold over 100 clowns and the tank still looks full.

Couldn't you split them up into two tanks and put the BT in with them?
I put a small gbta in my tank that probably has about 30 fry in there and they all love it. It is very small so I will be putting another small gbta in there with them so they want be crowding the one that is in there now. One of the lfs told me that i can get a little more money for them being raised with the anemones.

Hi Ernieq I know somewhere on one of the many pages here you mentioned that you used seachem denitrate inside one of those HOB filters systems how much did you use?

My batch is now 3-4 months old and have a lot of misbars I do recall you said something about strong aeration will help to decrease the chance of misbars but I added additional aeration in there and still have misbars.
Could the PH level have any effects on them? If it is low?

My PH level is low as well on my growout, although that wouldn't affect the bars as they are already developed by the time they go to growout. As far ast the denitrate is concerned, I just put enough on a filter media bag so that it could fill one of the "partitions" that the normal filter inserts usually take. I know you are pretty OCD about keeping the fry tanks clean, so other than ammonia, I don't see your how your water quality could be affected? Did you monitor the ammonia constantly? if you use an ammonia badge, is it working right? Since you have true perculas and I have ocellaris, mine develop their bars very quickly. I'm thinking in your case, maybe by the time you raised up the aeration, it was too late? Have done the stronger aeration with later batches?

I haven't moved them to a growout tank because I have run out of heaters, HOB filters, lights so they are still in the 10 gallon tank. I do need to separate them because there is still some that are really still very small compared to the others in there.
My ammonia badge got messed up but I figured there should not be very much ammonia in there since I am changing the water out frequently...
I have only had one batch since that one and only 4 survived and they are a little over a month old and I even added more aeration in their tank much earlier than I did the other ones and they too are showing signs of misbars.
No more batch so far because I moved the breeding pair into their own tank out of the DT.

Feeding three times a day morning, lunch, and dinner. I have been using the TDO -B1 then went to B2 and still on B2 for now.

Are you feeding any type of frozen foods? I don't think it really matters, but I used to feed them frozen cyclopeze once every other day. I don't know why you are getting misbarring, as far as I know it has been attributed to increased ammonia content before and during meta. It is my understanding that low oxygen levels cause flared gills.

Feed very little frozen food to them and never did during the meta phases. I just started to give them a little frozen cyclopeze but not that often... Well if and when my breeding pair starts to lay eggs again I will be sure to get extra, extra bubble wands & more ammonia badges. Someone mentioned to me that the water temp might have had something to do with the misbars.. What type of heaters do you have in the fry tank? and do they stay a constant temp?

They don't really stay a constant temp, +/- 2 or 3 degrees. They are just the inexpensive stuff you buy at places like petsmart.

Here's a look today. Most of them are now 1 year olds. I've stopped selling them for now as I can get twice as much when they reach 2 inches. So I am down to "only" 163.
