My plan of a 125 gallon build

Logan, I was lucky in catching the blue tang with a trap from the old tank. The fish is over six inches long and I have a 6 gal QT tank so I didn't even think of putting the fish there. I agree with you. The fish has gone thru the trauma of being caught, transferred to a new environment, and exposed to a mini-ammonia spike. All of which caused great stress to the fish. I am just going to let the fish be and watch it closely. In the mean time, I have soaked some seaweed strips in garlic solution and fed them to the tang. She ate every piece of it. Hopefully this helps to build up its immune system to keep the ich out. Thanks for your feedback.

Rich, thanks for the info. That's very helpful. I had this tang for 4 yrs+ and it never had ich before so this is really its first exposure.

I still swear by my UV, I have SIX TANGS in my tank right now along with many others. I have never seen any ICH on any of my fish. I have 3yellow tangs, Pacific Blue, Purple, Red lipped Naso. All happy as can be.

Trademark, I may need to look into more about UV light. Some don't think it was very effective against non-free floating form of ich which mostly attach to the substrate and rocks. Rich mentioned hyposalinity which is supposed to be quite effective but I will have to catch the fish first and then have to keep the fish in QT for many weeks. What about the tank? Doing a hypo with the DT will pretty much kill all my CUC and bacteria which means I will have to cycle the tank all over again.:sad2:

Copper treatment will have the same negative effect to my tank. I think I am just going to keep the fish as stress free as possible and feed her garlic soaked food everyday and see what happens in the next couple of days. Right now the fish is quite active and eating well but scratches herself against rocks. Hopefully those scratches won't turn into secondary infection.

UV will help lessen the population of the ich in the water column which will make it easier for your fish to stay ich free. I've also been reading that ich can burn itself out after a year without doing anything to the tank. Something to do with the population limiting itself and then dying out (too many generations or something). But in all honesty, if you keep the fish healthy and eating you will probably be ok. The only issue you may run into in the future is if you add another fish and it is stressed it might pick up ich as well.

Again, just my two cents.

My whole reasoning for having a UV is trying to create a stress free environment ( I know having 6 tangs might not help at all). ICH does free float a little. The UV helps also with free floating algae which can also stress fish out if it gets to bad. I've just had good luck with mine. I have an Aqua UV 25watt w/ wiper

+1 to leave the fish be. Even if you use a qt ich can still get into your system via frags. Each of my tangs had a spot or two the first week in the tank.

Just to show off some pictures of my few corals in the tank, mostly LPS. I hope to add more SPS frags soon.

FTS this evening

Blue Tang is still covered with ich but didn't get any worse. You can see the scratch above the left eye. I have been feeding garlic soaked nori strips.

David, I went to the store and bought a cleaner shrimp today just for this reason. As soon as I put that in the tank, the blue tang kept going to the spot the shrimp was hiding wanting to be cleaned. But the shrimp never came out of its hiding place:fish1:.

Simon I am getting ready to do some fragging on some of my SPS. Once I get them done I will let you know.

I will be very interested in some new SPS. I am going to be out of town Tue thru Fri but I will check my emails and text messages often.

nice build :) i am upgrating my 90g to 125g soon.
quick question, how do you keep your back glass clean?

Thanks! The back glass is clean because 1) my tank is new; 2) when I placed the rocks, I made sure there was enough room for an algae scrapper to reach between the back glass and rocks; 3) a lot of elbow grease daily:spin3:

hahah that what i was thinking. Its a long tank so i am sure its not that easy to clean that back glass. I am not looking forvard to that haha

just beautiful simon. do you have any regrets on your plumbing design?

Thanks! Yes and no to my plumbing design. I failed to realize the Bean Animal design requires the primary drain and the open channel both must be in the same pool of water. I couldn't modify the overflow kit because the stand pipes were all glued to the bulkheads and there is just no room to house two 1.5 pipes with elbow in each corner-flo.

So I ended up with one really silent corner-flo and the other just normal corner-flo. If I push too much water to the display tank (my return pump has adjustable flow rates), the normal corner-flo will go in and out of siphon making a lot of gurgling noise. However, with the adjustable flow and a gate valve controlling how much water going up to the display tank, I can fine tune and find a sweet spot where the whole tank is just silent. The only noticeable sound that I hear comes from the Vortech MP40W! The Blowhole 1450 pump is so quiet I have to touch it to know it is running.

Trademark, as you suggested I decided to give UV sterilizer a try. I came across this used Aqua UV 27W in RC used equipment for sale forum for a pretty good price.

The Regal Blue Tang is still doing well. There are still some white spots but they didn't get any worse and the fish seems to be okay.

I was out of town most of the week. Today I replaced a troublesome RKE power strip and installed the UV Sterilizer. I will give an update to see if the UV sterilizer makes any difference in the ich situation and water clarity.
