it's a DAS EX1. I had to readjust the crap out of it. Wow.
If your tank goes through the same bacterial bloom like kk's and mine your skimmer is gonna be pulling some of the nastiest stuff you've seen over the next few days. the bloom, if you get one, should only last a few days and will last longer if your tank has very high nutrient levels. It's very similar to what I've read about with bio pellets.it's all fairly clear right now...but it's definitely skimming out something. Hopefully in a day or two it will turn into really good skimmate (nasty stuff).
After fighting nitrates for ever, and losing, macro not growing, corals browning, slow growth, bubble algae, red turf algae, why not? I added a half cup of white rice to my system tonight. I rinsed it well and put it in a nylon bag in my filter sock. My skimmer is having a good ole time of it, there was an almost immediate reaction.
I have never been able to get my trates below 20, I hope I have similiar good results like some others posting here.
ok I'm in. Anyone who has been following me on the NP BP thread knows that those pellets have not started to work for me in almost 4 months. Others have had much faster success.
so I'm gonna give white rice a chance since most of you are posting some great results.
I've added 1/2 cup of plain white sushi rice (short to med grain) to my TLF 550. And I've dialed in my skimmer which is already foaming quite well. Before it was just average foam.now I had to turn it down a little.
I hope all continues to go well for all of us.
starting stats.
ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate...all zero (0).
nitrate 15ppm.
temp 77
cal 420
alk 8
sal. 1.025.
added .5 cups to a 58g tank. With rock and sump equip. Probably 50g. (?)
OMG....skimmer went nutz! And FAST!

Hi y'all it's been 8 days since I brought the rice reactor online and still looking good. My orp went down a bit today.
Orp 307mV
Ph 8.2
Ammo 0
No2 0
No3 0 undetectable
Po4 0 undetectable redsea kit
Kh 10
calc 460-480 API kit
Mag 1410 ppm redsea kit
O2 7 ppm
Aside from a bit of a drop in orp things are pretty much looking the same in my tank. All corals showing normal color and polyp extention however my crayola plana is starting to look a bit more colorful and in general alot of my corals are looking a bit brighter including my Joe the coral, tricolor, orange cap, green/yellow acro, blue Millie. my 30k lokani which is a new addition was given to me browned out but is starting to color up nice etc... So far I believe I am starting to see the benefits of a low nutrient system and have been removing my cheato one handful per day I'm now at 1/4 of my normal amount. Am going to check the drip rate on my calc reactor tonight to try and find out why my kh and mag levels are up a little higher than usual. Although I haven't opened up my reactor yet the rice does not seem to be breaking up I am starting to think that the few pieces of rice in there may have been broken before adding them to the reactor or were cracked while dry and then split after being tumbled.
That happened to kk's skimmer too what kind of skimmer are you running. My Tunze skimmer is kind of touchy if you add stuff the foam head "breaks" and it stops skimming for a bit. It happens when I stick my hands in the tank or when I feed and especially when I added the rice. But after a day it was taking out more stuff than it ever had.
Oh yeah and as kk would say welcome to the rice wagon!
It's 4:30am here and I finally can sleep, the skimmer has started to chillax finally and isn't on the verge of overflowing so much. I hope my flow isn't too fast. Only someof the rice is tumbleing...its this darn TLF 550, it's not great at dispersing the flow. Lame.
but on a side note I am still using the NP pellets in my QT. It's a quick set up retrofit job so the flow is massive and they are tumbleing a lot now. Ironically I feel that now I may get the bacterai bloom from them since they are more agitated.
the rice however will be sweet if it out competes the QT. I'll laugh myself silly, since I've waited so long for them to "activate" and work....and the potential winner was rice sitting in my cabinet all along.
yes I rinsed the rice till it ran super clear...and so far to my amazement it is NOT soft. I guess it does take heat to do that. They are not breaking. And as stated the skimmer went nutz, but there is still zero cloudyness in the tank. I'm hopeing to be the first with no bloom from rice but still have it succede. (i don't remember anyone NOT having a bloom)
to be fair...my tank may have been seeded from something in the BP, but I really don't buy that...it never delivered on it's promises. And if I need more (or less) rice I can just grab some for free. I like this experiment. And I'm excited because I may be on a fronteering bandwagon. I never take those chances, but this tame the opportunity was to easy. And if it doesn't work I have little to lose.
thanks guys.

Dave I hope it work out for you. Keep us posted on daily basic big or small I like to know. After 24 hours of use give us a test result on your parameter. It have been reported that skimmate will smell bad if so don't alarm normal process.
one last thing before I try to beat this insomnia.
what kind of cyno levels did any of you have before the rice? My nutrients are not a ulnc levels...but just before starting the rice, with the BP...my sand started getting a lot of cyno again. I kind of want to to use chem clean...but I would rather wait and see if the rice can knock it out by limiting it's food source.
