my rice experiment

also bluefaceangel, all the side-effects that we've noted, i.e the hazy water etc are ALL NORMAL reactions to carbon dosing, be it vodka, vinegar, sugar, bio-pellets.

so get ur facts right before you say something like that

update day 8

nothing new to report other than a few little point

1.water seems to have cleared up a little bit more, its just the dieing algae is causing bacteria to consume it and making the water seem just maybe 1% hazy or so.

2.skimmer is still pulling out a lot of gunk, I definitely think u need a very good skimmer for this method of solid carbon dosing.

3.all tank inhabitants are looking good, my sps is starting to get a little color back which had turned brown BEFORE starting this experiment. lps are opening up like before. zooanthids remain uneffected, mushrooms are getting used to the lower nutrients and starting to open up nicely.

4.no3 and po4 are undetectable.

I need to clean the algae off my glass and maybe use a mechanical filter for a bit to remove all the detritius thats accumulated, but thats totally not related to this experiment.

overall, I'm pretty satisfied with this experiment.

Years ago a product came out said that it will kill all your algea in your tank. Reefer went wild and buy this product many reefers lost there live stock that they have for years. evertime reefer post there problem with this thay came up bull reason. It have be pull off market. You going to have a reefer said something that is not nice even that you stated the fact which is good. They still make joke's on vodka.

it will definitely bring down ur no3 and po4, plus u dont need to get gfo anymore

Yeah I haven't done GFO Yet but was going to. Right now I use Cheato But might definitely try it. Which reactor should I get? Looking at the singles on BRS and just run a tee off of my return pump or I have a rio 600 I could use? What do you think?

I would say from following the thread since the beginning, that it is a fairly low risk experiment after the fact. Issues like trace metals seem to have been addressed. The rice seems to hold up. The total P in rice doesn't appear to be an amount that could possibly create more phosphate problems. AND, it appears to be controlling NO3 and PO4. There have been a few side effects, but nothing detrimental and so far not permanent.

However, it is still just a series of on-the-fly experiments that have very few control conditions. To the naysayers, you should be opening your eyes to the possibility that this may work. To the rice bandwagon, stay vigilant and watch for problems. Theres still a long way to go.

Thanks for taking all the risks.

I hope rice is not something like that, and the difference in rice and all those other products is that I'M NOT TRYING TO SELL YOU ANYTHING.

this is why I've been asking more people to try the rice out, that we can have a broader range of conditions with which people have had success. for all I know maybe the rice will not work with sharks or rays?
the more people that try this and confirm their success, then the surer we are that rice does not have any ill effects

hi, I'm not too familiar with either the reactor or the pump since we dont get them here. as long as you have a slight tumble in the reactor any reactor or any pump will do.
I suggest atleast 150gph for the pump, but I would be happy if you could check it out and report back on this thread about what works and what doesnt

I have started to use rice. The only thing that I am seeing is that the rice in the reactor is turning a light purple color. Is this happening to anyone.Skimmer has improved .

+1 noahm.
I am with the rice bandwagons.

welcome aboard dude, lemme know if you want to try it and I'll help you when ur ready. GFO is not available here and is like gold for reefers, so this could prove very effective. plus I have 5lbs of rice for the whole lot of us.....lol

light purple?
what kind of rice did you use?
you cannot use scented or any kind of special rice. just plain ol white rice (we have not yet trid brown), preferably the short grain, but icycoral is having the sam results with the long grain as well. only difference is the pieces broke a bit from the tumbiling in the begining.

please make sure you wash the rice throughly, also post a pic of ur rice so we can see what you mean by purple.

Brand of rice is goya med grain white rice.
Not good at posting picks .
Skimmer pulling out more crap than ever.
Tank params phos 0, nit 0
Still get gha ,used phosphate remover IMO its usless
Tank
400 pluss gall
etss 1800 skimmer
all aneomnes hadoni,bubble tip
reason trying this is I cannot keep Gigantea anemones over a long period of time ???

hi greg, glad ur trying this.
brand of rice does not make a difference as long as its plain white rice without additives or scents or flavours.
are you using it in a reactor?
is the rice gently tumbling?
if yes to both, just wait a few days, your water will become hazy and will clear up after a few days nothing to worry about.
please get photobucket or imageshack so you can post your progress pics as well. this would be helpful to others.
thanks

In a week or so, I may throw a half cup in with my wm pellets, but then that throws any kind of results regarding either into the 'hearsay' dept. although tank conditions are what we are ultimately after, I wouldn't really be able to argue a case for either.

ok I'm in. Anyone who has been following me on the NP BP thread knows that those pellets have not started to work for me in almost 4 months. Others have had much faster success.

so I'm gonna give white rice a chance since most of you are posting some great results.

I've added 1/2 cup of plain white sushi rice (short to med grain) to my TLF 550. And I've dialed in my skimmer which is already foaming quite well. Before it was just average foam.now I had to turn it down a little.

I hope all continues to go well for all of us.

starting stats.

ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate...all zero (0).
nitrate 15ppm.
temp 77
cal 420
alk 8
sal. 1.025.

added .5 cups to a 58g tank. With rock and sump equip. Probably 50g. (?)

Update

Update

Hi y'all it's been 8 days since I brought the rice reactor online and still looking good. My orp went down a bit today.
Orp 307mV
Ph 8.2
Ammo 0
No2 0
No3 0 undetectable
Po4 0 undetectable redsea kit
Kh 10
calc 460-480 API kit
Mag 1410 ppm redsea kit
O2 7 ppm
Aside from a bit of a drop in orp things are pretty much looking the same in my tank. All corals showing normal color and polyp extention however my crayola plana is starting to look a bit more colorful and in general alot of my corals are looking a bit brighter including my Joe the coral, tricolor, orange cap, green/yellow acro, blue Millie. my 30k lokani which is a new addition was given to me browned out but is starting to color up nice etc... So far I believe I am starting to see the benefits of a low nutrient system and have been removing my cheato one handful per day I'm now at 1/4 of my normal amount. Am going to check the drip rate on my calc reactor tonight to try and find out why my kh and mag levels are up a little higher than usual. Although I haven't opened up my reactor yet the rice does not seem to be breaking up I am starting to think that the few pieces of rice in there may have been broken before adding them to the reactor or were cracked while dry and then split after being tumbled.

OMG....skimmer went nutz! And FAST!

That happened to kk's skimmer too what kind of skimmer are you running. My Tunze skimmer is kind of touchy if you add stuff the foam head "breaks" and it stops skimming for a bit. It happens when I stick my hands in the tank or when I feed and especially when I added the rice. But after a day it was taking out more stuff than it ever had.

Oh yeah and as kk would say welcome to the rice wagon!
