My Sebae

I've had this Sebae for about a month and I think he is doing great! I add Iodine, Trace Elements, and MicroVert to the tank. Do these Anemones split? If so How often? I have heard conflicting stories on why they split. Some say they split when your water conditions are poor, others when it is good. Anyone have some correct answers!

Thanks. the Lfs to me that it was good to add it for the shrimp and the anemone. Don't they make test kits for it?

You should get plenty of iodine from water changes alone unless you had alot of soft corals absorbing it.
You can actually kill the shrimp by overdosing iodine, it can cause excessive molting.
I don't recall the pic before, think you may have added that after my first comment.
That sebae is bleached, it can come back in right conditions, maybe squirt some mysis into it every other day to help.
Hopefully you have good lighting.
Check here before purchases, LFS often sell stuff you don't need/want, and not all give good advice being that will be based on sales.

Ok thanks. He was this color when I bought him. I have t5 lighting and my tank is only 18" deep. I will try feeding him the mysis and see what happens.

Yeah, noone's blaming you, but you should know, there are almost no white anemones in nature, and none of them are "Sebaes". The one you have is going to turn tan or brown, then maybe get purple or green tinted. If it lives it will not stay white.

Also, LFS don't usually know much about anemones, so they wouldn't necessarily know this stuff in the first place. And lastly, LFS often give anemones old names that aren't accurate anymore. So in your case, they call it a Sebae, but there 3 or more anemones that they might call that name. To get specific info, you should know that you have a Heteractis Crispa anemone. HTH

Yes feed it, small amounts daily or every other day until it gets its color back. Mysis, krill, etc are all ok. Good luck with it.

FWIW my sebae/crispa was very bleached on purchase just like yours, not only did it come back, but it max'd out at 2 feet in diameter.
I had mine for years before downsizing both tank and nems.

I use iodine to assist anemones in regaining zooxanthellae. It can be dangerous, and I wouldn't advise it to a new person in the hobby. Especially in a reef with other healthy photosynthetic animals.

So I have been feeding my Crispa Mysis shrimp every other day. When I wasn't feeding him he just sat in the one spot. Now he is moving around a little bit like he now wants a little more light since I have been feeding him. I am including some new pictures of him as he has gained a tiny bit of color.

9 Weeks later and he is almost back to full color. He has one small area that is still white. Wonder why it has not changed yet? He does seem to be raising that area up to the light.

Great recovery there!!! You know what you outta do? Take these pictures to the LFS and SHOW them what a healthy anemone looks like.

It really infuriates me to see the bleached anemones in the LFS. Even more so when you mention to one of the staff that "hey, your anemones are all bleached" and they reply, "No, they're supposed to be that color. They're special 'white' anemones."
