My Seven Footer

I have tried kick ich before with no luck.I think that QT and garlic in the food might help. You also might check some threads on hypo salinity seems people have good luck with that.

Best of luck.

Well, the battle started last night.

Finished plumbing in the UV sterilizer at 3 a.m. or so. 114 watt aqua... rated to sterilize water at flow rate of 1300 gph. All of the water from my return is going through here. Tonight, I vacuumed the side of the tank where the sick fish sleep, assuming the tomonts are probably well established over there. I pulled the standpipes out and vacuumed right into my overflow box.

The tomonts will hopefully get caught in the filter socks, set up shop in the sump where there are no fish and starve, and / or get cooked by the UV on the way back to the display.

The hospital tank is set up. I also will plumb this 40 watt UV sterilzer and put copper in this tank. Ultimately, I will filter this with an old sump and sterilize the water coming back to the tank... putting the live rock down in the sump.

Finally the tricky part. Catching that purple tang before the trophonts fall off his body. I see less spots today, optimistically, hoping the cleaner shrimp picked some off. Here is my fish trap. He is ignoring it. Maybe tomorrow when they are hungrier they will go in and take a look.

I got some "reef safe" ich medicine from my LFS which is some homeopathic tea extract supposedly containing some quinine like substance. This was mostly to make me feel better (maybe mixed with some scotch). Anyway, I put it in the tank and the water turns quite brown. This will work against the UV sterilzer... so... I will probably skip this part of the treatment.

Yea, they were out of kick ich. I think I will skip that stuff, no one seems to think it works.

On a cheerier note, here are some pics from 04/28... before the naso tang croaked and the spots showed up on my purple tang.

Here is the nice frag my good pal Mike from Reef Specialty got for me. All the corals and clams seem pretty happy.

Hi Ryan,
Did you get the copperband out ??
The tank look's better every time I come over. How's the new frag I dropped off today doing . It should be nice and hairy by now .

Mike

Hey Mike! Yes, the new frag is nice and hairly looking... good polyp extension. The tank looks much better with the ballasts turned up too. Hopefully, that montipora will color back up now.

The Copperband is on probation. He ate all but one aptasia yesterday and is feeding much more aggressively out of the water column. The clams are wide open and he seems to be leaving them alone since you left yesterday. I think he was showing off for you. Or, perhaps just trying to figure out what to eat. I hope he can stay... I really hate going after aptasias. Oops.. as I typed that, he just dinged a clam. Little turd. He might end up on the rental circuit if he doesn't watch out.

At any rate, everything looks great today. Thanks again for all your help. The onsight visits are awesome... there is only so much one can get from the internet.

Oh, one final thing... I am pouring in the magnesium look Kool Aid trying to get my Mg up. Glad you suggested the five gallon bucket!

Ryan.

What salt are you using? I've had to supplement quite a bit also, but now that I supplement the instant ocean with magnesium before water changes I haven't had a problem.

Just figured I'd chime in and say that Ich Kick worked well for me about 2 years ago in my 120g fully stocked mixed reef tank without any noticeable draw backs.

Tank looks great, I really like those 2 cap's together, awesome color contrasts.

Looking good Ryan. Do you only have the one Tunze in there?

Hey Jeremy. There are four tunzes in there. Three are hidden in the rocks and the fourth that you see will be hidden eventually as well. Two 6200s and two 6100s.

Thanks for the words.... especially not another ich disaster story. I have some Ich Attack. Holding it for now. The spots have mostly gone away and all the fish are looking good. Mike was over and laughed at me that I was so worried. Perhaps the other fish deaths were not ich related. Who knows? At any rate, the purple tang looks great now, and, if I wasn't looking hard, I would not be able to see any spots on him. I do sleep well at night knowing that the UV is going 24 / 7 to kill anything that trys to come up from the sump.

I added 2 gallons of ESV Mg and finally have the mag up over 1200. Will get the Ca up next and hopefully start to see some purple on those rocks.

The kick ick worked for me years ago (painfully expensive for tanks as large as ours). without a doubt, the 114 watt UV cured my problem and it has been successful ever since. Now adding fish is a walk in the park and I dont have the "Ick" panic....

Good to hear things are doing better, ich can be a really PITA in a large tank as getting fish out is not really an option. I hooked up a UV after my last ich attack as well but don't run one anymore.

Mg can be a really PITA, just had a problem raising it also. Took me a month but things are finally leveling out. Hope your tank goes the same way soon, damn startup tuning. At least it isn't boring!

Thanks guys. I like the idea of being able to control - to a certain degree - the free floating organisms in the water column with UV and / or ozone. I will probably just run UV during the day under normal operation and 24 hours with new fish or any ich scares.

Next step is to prepare for power outages. For starters, I am going to put in some pen plax battery operated pumps with the ultimate plan of installing a generator. I got one bid for a generac via home depot that was outrageous (the installation costs)... so... I am still looking.

Also, I need to ventillate my chiller. The basement is getting hot and the tank is having trouble cooling. Will post pics of that project.

Always stuff to do!

D;OH.

Purple tang woke up with new spots this a.m. About fifty. Worse than the initial presentation... but... his colors are less affected. He remains the tank bully. All other fish healthy and no signs of distress. Hit tank with ich attack magic tea extract this a.m. to show my displeasure. If the parasites are syncronized... it seems that the life cycle is pretty quick on this one, one to two weeks. I have to give a lecture this a.m. and have guests coming over this afternoon. I might try again to catch that tang later today. Copperband is still doing great and less intersted in the clams lately.

Mg is holding at 1300.
Alk 9 dkh
Calcium 430

Dosed CaCl with water change last night and Mg. Will retest soon.

O.K. Slap my 4ss and call me Sally.

The spots on the purple tang are gone one hour after dosing kick ich. There is no way in h$ll that the medication did that... so... this bug must have an ultra fast life cycle. Will hit with Kick Ich twice daily for the next few days...

I have a theory... wishful thinking voodo and hocus pockus theory... that maybe the stuff will work by confusing the swarmers. In other words... since the water looks dark like tea and the stuff smells, maybe it screws up the chemoreceptors on the parasites so they can't find the fish.

The clams corals and inverts seem to like the stuff anyway.

Still seeing spots on that purple tang, daily. I pulled him into QT today with a fish trap and he is getting copper and water changes. I will keep him out of the DT for six weeks. I know... unless I take all the fish out the Ich will still be there... but, this fish seems to be the only host they like. Will be interesting to see if they find a new host now... and... if when the purple goes back in DT if he gets Ich again immediately.
