My Seven Footer

Ryan. Thanks! The copper racks are sized so that they cannot fall out if they slide forward or back. There is only about 1/2 inch of wiggle room anyway and it sits very snugly. The guy by the hammer is a frogspawn. It is in more current than normal, and, the polyp extension is just right to let you see the flourescent mouths... making it look like an elegance. The one right behind it does not seem happy and I don't know why. They have been living right next to each other for a long time.

Deec77. Thanks! I will try to do a full presentation of the system in action when I have time to clean the basement.

Mike. Thanks to your help! Per your advice, I will build the bottom layers up first starting with the LPS. Once the algae parade is over... will start the acros. Can't wait to see your tank in person.

Well. Some trouble.

I have been procrastinating setting my up quarantine tank, and just got burned. A pink tail trigger was added to the tank, with, what I thought was a minor scratch on his left eye. The fish was doing great, however, one morning, I noticed that the "scratch" had moved from the periphery of his cornea, to the center. As I looked more closely, I realized it was a small parasite. After looking and reading, I think it is a cirolanid isopod, or, some other parasitic isopod. With close inspection, I think a second smaller one is on the eye.

So, I caught him with a quickie fish trap and he is in my newly commissioned QT now.

The main tank seems otherwise fine, and I am sure that the bad pod came from the fish, and not my rock. So, I am hoping it has not had time to reproduce in my tank. From what I understand, if those little devils breed in your tank, you are done... having to remove all the fish for six months to try to starve them.

Next tough decision is what to do with the pink tail. Sacrifice it? Try to cure it? It is a great fish, plenty of energy and eats like a horse, but, there is no good way to kill the parastites that I can find. I suppose I will simply watch him for a couple of weeks and try interceptor. If this fails, I will manually extract the parasite(s) with tweezers. Any input would be appreciated to help save this poor guy. I worry that there may be more on the gills or places I can't see. :(

are there any other inverts that will eat your isopods? what about cleaner shrimp?

thats a bummer though, good thing you caught before spreading. QT QT QT QT QT :D

i have another question about your setup. could you perhaps provide more info on exactly how you fastened the tunzes to your rock stack? were you able to fasten the default mounting hardware onto your pvc frame, or did you have to make something special for that?

i'm considering doing something similiar but i'm not sure if my tank needs the extra flow with the OM-4way closedloop with the sequence dart, and barracuda return.

Yes, QT! Lessoned learned. Hope I get away with this one though. I have thought about a cleaner shrimp. Trying praziquantil in the hospital tank today. Will extract the parasite tomorrow... fish surgery.

I used the tunze hardware and zip tied it to the eggcrate. It was really easy and I can take the tunzes out for cleaning really easily.

Ryan.

Wow! Success. I used praziquantil in the QT and the parasite is gone! The fish looks good. Will leave in the treated water for 5 days and QT for a week or two. Will have him back in the main tank next week.

Mike from reef specialty brought me a sweet montipora frag.

I think the pink tail is dead. Went down at 4 am to check on him, and he is drifiting around the bottom. No gill movement at all. Strange, his colors are perfect and he looked fine last night. I know triggers like to sleep... but... this looks bad! Not giving up just yet, we shall see what happens when the sun comes up.

I hope the pink tail makes it. I can't get any pics to show, I'm sure they're still current. But is anyone else having this problem?

Glad you switched out the lighting hangers. You'll be too.

Aaron

Yes, the new light hangers are much better.

Poor pink tail expired. No doubt the next time I looked. Strange. Since the tank is only 2.5 months old, anything could be going on. Will hold off on stocking for awhile.

Next projects:
1. One more rock structure.
2. Finish ventillation system.
3. Program aquasurf
4. Clean basement.

THings seem to be going well, so, I proceeded with stocking again. I added a purple tang, a copperband (eating x 2 weeks in LFS), and a Naso tang.

The copperband is eating brine shrimp pretty well and no one bothers him. Fingers crossed.

I have a test piece of monipora that is holding it's color and looks good. More updates after dinner.

Those are pacific coast eductors. Total flow from the sump is about 1500 gph, and I think I am getting about 4500 - 6000 gph through the tank from the eductors. The are the 3/4 inch versions from Marine Depot.

Very nice,
I really like your rock work and your cabinet.
Any more corals soon?

Thanks for the compliments! Well, the tank is 2.75 months old. My test montipora frags seem to be doing well. Nitrates are still zero even after feeding the heck out of the tank to nourish that CopperBand. Maybe some more of the plating corals for the lower part of the tank.... if I can talk my source out of some more frags!

I was shopping for some nice LPS, but, didn't see much this weekend. A few more nice lobophylias would be good at this point. I saw one really nice Scolymia (meat coral), but, did not have luck with them in my old tank. Perhaps due to hosting behaviour by clowns. I probably should have just bought it.

Will probably wait until mo. 6 for acros.

That's the plan anyway!

Ryan.

1500 from the sump. are the eductors feed frm the sump or are the on a closed loop?

K9aisa... the tank is fed from the sump (in the basement) via a Reeflo Marlin (pressure rated) pump. I calculated head pressure via the reef central calculator, and added about four feet for the eductors to come up with the estimated flow rate of about 1500 gph. out of the pump.

Bad news.

As I was going to work yesterday I thought... hmmm... I did not see the Naso tank this morning. When I got home from work, I find the grizley remains of the fish behind the rocks. Healthy and swimming and eating to dead in 24 hours. This is three fish now suddenly dead or presumed dead... lastly observed totally healthy before disappearance or death. :eek2:

The yellow tangs, wrasses, goby, and copperband all look great.

However...

The purple tang blossomed with a clear ich infestation. Mystery solved (?). The purple tang sleeps where the pink tail trigger used to sleep. This is probably where the parasites are in the substrate. My theory is that the ich came in with the trigger. I have never tangled with marine ich before... and am surprised how fast it is killing these fish and also how selective it seems to be. In retrospect, I do remember seeing some unilateral blanching on the side of both the trigger and the naso as the first sign of trouble. This disappeared on the trigger and he looked completly recovered, and, then went down in a bare bottom QT doing qod 75% water changes and vacuuming / scrubbing the bottom of the tank each day.

I spend last night plumbing in my UV sterilizer and fired that up at 4 a.m. I tried to catch the puple tang. I have a store bought fish trap that was a disaster to use. I will use my home-made one tonight to see if I can at least QT the tang (assuming he is not dead by tonight).

I have ordered four liters of kick ich with the intention of treating the main tank. Supposedly reef and invert safe. I don't think I can catch all the fish, but, might consider pulling out the substrate.

Words of encouragement, advice, will be appreciated. Next step is to build out the QT facility to a hospital facility. I have another UV sterilzer which I will run on the hospital tank, probably with copper. I plan to skip the dips, not convinced that they work after reading.

If I lost one fish every two years, that was a lot until this mess!

:eek2:

Looking great Ryan! Do you plan on attending the Midwest FragFest this weekend in Rockford? There is going to be some nice LPS there from what I have seen from others posting what they are bringing!

Oh! Thanks for the heads up. I will probably refrain... need to see what happens when I hit the tank with the kick ich. Hopefully, this will not affect the corals.... but... we shall see. Maybe, I will head out just to see the event.
