My Simple Solana 34G

Perry,

Vortech pump works very well and the sps corais love the movent...

Thank You Ricardo! I agree, but I also like that in wave mode, while the sps corals receive lots of flow, the wavy ones down below do not receive the same brutal flow, these pumps are worth every penny

I was speechless when I clicked this link. I used to have a solana so im always a sucker for a beautiful one

Thank You very much! I am very satisfied with the reef, especially considering I am 2 1/2 months in... Glad I could take you for a walk down memory lane with the Solana...

Very nice, I really like the land scape in this tank.

Thank You,
I will likely reduce rock as corals grow, so the scape should become even more interesting over time, I appreciate your compliment, the aquascape pleases my eye, for now...lol...:spin3:

Looking good. Hope the random RTN events cease. I remember your 70G and that awesome pearlyberry shot (I even have that pearlberry shot saved on my iphone somewhere, as I use nice shots for the background...).

Anyway, hope it goes well. I suppose give the tank at least another 2 months if you can before adding (and spending money) on large colonies.

With young tanks SPS kind of like to RTN sometimes even with parameters being stable and at or near NSW values. Wild colonies are particularly prone to RTN in this respect.

But its good to see that you're back in the hobby and attempting another tank.

PS IMO the 150w Phoenix bulb is the BEST MH bulb in the 150w offering.

Of course with 250w and 400w versions Radium cant be beat, but at 150w I used to love the pop this bulb used to give to SPS. Nice choice.

Sahin,
Thank You for the kind words! That pic was on the ORA sight for awhile, but that was the coral that took me out of the hobby, I never recovered after it's loss, I will attempt another as soon as I can locate one locally, this way I can inspect it closer. I will likely hit Coral Corral next time I am in Tampa, probably score a mini-colony for same as a frag elsewhere:) Anyway, the phoenix in the DE HQI is without a doubt the best in the 150watt class. The SE 250watt Radium on HQI ballast still the best spectrum I have seen above any tank, including t5's and LED, maybe a bit old school, but that was the main light used on my 70gal zeovit, oh yeah, there were 8 t5's too, lol... Good to see you still around my friend

Looks great Perry! I hear you on the halides; I kinda wish I would have gone with a 150w instead of my LED's. I'm just having a hard time dialing them in. Atleast with halides, I knew what to expect.

Is it me, or is the Efflo taking off with growth? Looks great! Seriously, when I look at the top down pics compared to the new FTS, that thing looks like it's exploding!

Kasey,
Yes, the efflo and the blue millie are exploding with growth and coloration. My millie just had 2 branches forming at one of the top branches, the 2 shoots have grown 1/2 to 3/4" in 2 months. The efflow is throwing crazy PE, all day and the night feeders are insanely large. All other sps are also going nuts, my ponape birdnest is acting a bit funny, but I have never been able to get the pink and green pop with this coral, just not my coral I suppose. Thanks for the interest, I am still a bit old school and skeptical over LED's, I know they work, but I am seeing more and more adverse comments than positive ones lately. I don't mind heat, with heat comes a fan blowing on the surface and more top off water and surface agitation. IMO, I think corals prefer about a 2-3 degree variance from nightime to peak hours, just always worked for me. Remember, these sps corals in the wild get a 4-6 hour sunbake during low tide, I think that clasifies as a temperature variance, lol... I feel my recent explosing of coraline, my coral growth, and success really on water changes and good flow, the mp10 and phoenix bulb are stimulating growth that I cannot even document, but I will put up some comparision pics later to show growth...Thanks again man! BTW, you could get a mh setup for cheap, as everyone is bailing and moving to LEDs... If this tank were more than 20", I would be powering a 6-8 bulb powermodule, I know 1st hand that t5's kick butt...:)

You're right man, they really are exploding!

Yeah, LED's seemed like a great option, and they still might be. I wanted something fun to try with some DIY challenge. But, I just can't seem to find the power balance. Either things look dim or they're bleaching from too much light. I also hear PAR meters are inaccurate with LED's, so it's kind of a guessing game.

Part of me wants to stick it out for the challenge, but another part of me wants to just go back to MH's. I've always liked T5's, but I LOVE MH's. Phoenix's were the bulbs I used over my 30 breeder AIO and my 65g. We'll see what happens; the corals just aren't looking right in my tank, despite stable chemistry. Sorry to hijack, and thanks for the input!

I can't wait to see how much more growth you get by the end of May!

Kasey,
No worries about hijacking, I look forward to any and all reef topics, whether relevant to this thread or not... Stay the course, I am sure the LED's will work out, otherwise, you know how easy it is to score MH right now, especially with LED's becoming the new standard. GL on your tank bro!!! Look forward to your updates too... :)

Update:
I was able to find a local reefer who needed a zevit rx, and I need corals, so here is the latest, shout out to Will, another RC member, who hooked me up with the following... Today was like Christmas to me:)

Red Planet
Oregon Tort
Desawli
Green Slimer
Red/Metalic Polyp Millie

Time for a mid-month update on the tank... I moved some things around, I displayed the clam in front, and moved ric garden in front of it. I also am at less than 1" sandbed, I have slowly removed bit by bit. Also still using low nutrient approach with bw bac and biofuel. Active carbon and passive small amount of GFO still keep PO4 in check. I have also added some frags, as mentioned in my last post.
