L.macs are very hardy!
You often see them for sale in Asia in live food markets where they have stuffed the poor animals (alive) into large 1.25ltr coke bottles, they remain alive in those bottles for a fair while (hence the preference for the sales people to keep them stored like that).
Also, Dr.Caldwell a while back had his large (or one of his large) tanks which housed L.macs and a deep sand bed, rupture and essentially start to fall apart. To knowledge Dr.Caldwell wasn't sure how the animals were (condition wise) due to the nature of the lack of water (he discovered the tank like this, he didn't witness it happening).
Nonetheless....after digging out (I think 150Lbs/kg's) of sand he found the pair of L.macs doing fine at the very very bottom of the tank in there burrow (where there was still water).
So its safe to say that L.maculata is a very hardy species.
I have NEVER had a problem with mine nor have I ever been in the position to feel such ways, I wouldn't be surprised that when/if my L.mac died, he died in the "onguard" position at his burrow, sitting there for a good week before I realized "Ok he hasn't moved in ages....." lol only to realize he is dead!
All in all there tough!
Hey Ehudd he did not find one he has two. lol
How much money does it cost to run all that?
Dude small world! Just saw you vid on Reef Secrets Page. Man, I have been looking for a peacock mantis for years, how in the f*ck did you find one!!!!!!
Oh wow! I had no idea they were that durable... I really hope I don't end up having to go through what Dr. Caldwell did, but it's good to know that in an event like that they are able to handle it pretty well.
Thank you for all the information on these guys! Now I just have to track one down...
Hey Ehudd he did not find one he has two. lol
sweeeeeeeet! I bet that system is very entertaining. Its funny how what peeps consider pests I cannot seem to be able to find round these parts, and many people get enjoyment out of. I have a Tru-vu 6 block tank down and in front of my sump I was thinking on converting to the peacock cause, but must find first. Awsome videos.
l good call, selfish bugga he is!!![]()
Harpiosquilla look really awesome. That's also an unusual mantis that you don't see everyday over here in the States!
I live in Perth dude, We never get anything here. If you find one, think you could help a brother out and Ill even pay you to ship it to me. The guy from Reef Secrets is onto it but as been for arond 1 month now so i decided I would try and branch out.
Im thinking of setting something up the same. Since I know you collect, every now and then mantis shrimp do come up here, 2 weeks ago i saw a bright red spearer

Im not sure if it is this exactly, but I know they just got a red sea shipment in. Not sure if he is still there but if you are interested I can take a look.
My aim is to convert them from pest...to beloved part of the family =) to change the worlds views and show them what these magnificent animals are capable of, everyday I am astounded by what I see.
Not by feeding them antheus I can tell you that.
