My Ultimate Multi Mantis System(s)

Dude small world! Just saw you vid on Reef Secrets Page. Man, I have been looking for a peacock mantis for years, how in the f*ck did you find one!!!!!!

L.macs are very hardy!

You often see them for sale in Asia in live food markets where they have stuffed the poor animals (alive) into large 1.25ltr coke bottles, they remain alive in those bottles for a fair while (hence the preference for the sales people to keep them stored like that).

Also, Dr.Caldwell a while back had his large (or one of his large) tanks which housed L.macs and a deep sand bed, rupture and essentially start to fall apart. To knowledge Dr.Caldwell wasn't sure how the animals were (condition wise) due to the nature of the lack of water (he discovered the tank like this, he didn't witness it happening).

Nonetheless....after digging out (I think 150Lbs/kg's) of sand he found the pair of L.macs doing fine at the very very bottom of the tank in there burrow (where there was still water).

So its safe to say that L.maculata is a very hardy species.

I have NEVER had a problem with mine nor have I ever been in the position to feel such ways, I wouldn't be surprised that when/if my L.mac died, he died in the "onguard" position at his burrow, sitting there for a good week before I realized "Ok he hasn't moved in ages....." lol only to realize he is dead!

All in all there tough!

Oh wow! I had no idea they were that durable... I really hope I don't end up having to go through what Dr. Caldwell did, but it's good to know that in an event like that they are able to handle it pretty well.

Thank you for all the information on these guys! Now I just have to track one down...

sweeeeeeeet! I bet that system is very entertaining. Its funny how what peeps consider pests I cannot seem to be able to find round these parts, and many people get enjoyment out of. I have a Tru-vu 6 block tank down and in front of my sump I was thinking on converting to the peacock cause, but must find first. Awsome videos.

Your not looking very hard....

There everywhere for sale down here, do good research online and you will find many.

L.macs are very easy to get.

There the biggest (so can be spotted easily) and there zebra stripe pattern is unanimous with collectors for being an L.maculata (Morgoth was collected on the grounds he was an L.mac only to be corrected by Dr. Caldwell and told he is actually an L.sulcata, smaller version of L.macs basically).

So there often for sale.

Hey Ehudd he did not find one he has two. lol

That is correct =D

The Kraken measures in at 100mm and has a brown/tan base color.

The Juggernaut measures in at 180mm and has the typical green tinge base color. (he has to be max size, he is enormous in comparison to The Kraken).

Stomatopods are so much more entertaining then any other animal I have kept and for the level of maintenance they require well....its just a deal sealer!

My aim is to convert them from pest...to beloved part of the family =) to change the worlds views and show them what these magnificent animals are capable of, everyday I am astounded by what I see.

l good call, selfish bugga he is!! :P

I know your joking (I hope xD) but....

What good is a tank designed for a stomatopod with no stomatopod in it ?

Half of STAND C (large spearers stand) is currently empty/vacant so I have been thinking about what to put in those 2 last spaces, I don't really want to get the same as what I have already in there (L.sul & L.mac) but worst case scenario I will just get another 2 L.macs (L.mac is my fav).

I'm looking into Harpiosquilla rite now as there quite common here, get to over 300mm, are spearers, and have some color to them =D.

Harpiosquilla look really awesome. That's also an unusual mantis that you don't see everyday over here in the States!

I am not sure about them actually residing in the states (since the only info I have is on Australian stomatopods...)

The general idea to fill STAND C (last 2 compartments) is to get large 300mm+ colorful spearers, unfortunately its the spearer nature to be rather 'bland' in color.

Another that I am looking into is the Kempina mikado

EDIT: I have given details to all my collectors / hunters on the 2 species.

L.mapia & L.lisa and whilst neither are known from our waters...the waters that they are known from, are but a mere stones throw away...so the possibilities are there (that and to knowledge climate wise its nigh on the same, there/here).

Due to the nature of both these species and there very bright vibrant colors, if they are here, they will be easy to I.D. for the divers and hence allow them to confidently relay back what species that have.

Because neither of these species are not found within Australian waters (or at the very least not recorded being captured here)....

I do not have much hopes for them finding them (secretly of coarse I hope they do...) but if specific stomatopod hunters/reasearchers couldn't find them....then I doubt my collectors can.

Nonetheless, in order to boost the confidence in the divers along with bump myself up there list of priority...I offered the lead diver (the one whom hands out the info to the other divers), a $1000+ bounty for each animal should they find them....

In return I got the response...

"=D Rite Away Sir!"

So I am excited!!! I think if I got an email of an L.pamia / L.lisa in my inbox, I would literally fall over in orgasmic ecstasy!!!!

I live in Perth dude, We never get anything here. If you find one, think you could help a brother out and Ill even pay you to ship it to me. The guy from Reef Secrets is onto it but as been for arond 1 month now so i decided I would try and branch out.

Im thinking of setting something up the same. Since I know you collect, every now and then mantis shrimp do come up here, 2 weeks ago i saw a bright red spearer

Im not sure if it is this exactly, but I know they just got a red sea shipment in. Not sure if he is still there but if you are interested I can take a look.

Ok well as far as those that get them frequently and I can account for seeing 2 in the past couple months for sale (me buying 1, The Kraken) is Marine Boutique (http://www.marineboutique.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10&Itemid=21) you can also place orders with them or 'wishes' and they will collect them, there basically more collectors then an actual aquarium.....however prepare to pay a LOT.....The Kraken cost me $310 and is only 4inchs long....(my largest spearer was $165 and basically more then twice The Krakens size).

Your best bet is to branch out as you said, but place multiple orders in multiple stores, contact all your LFS ask them if you can order, order the same thing with allll of them, the more places you can order from the swifter your chances. Initially its what I did and it filled my tanks...FAST (way to fast...at one point I had 6 stomatopods in 1 tank that was only 80L...a true testament to there durability as I lost NONE).

I would be very interested in seeing the 'red spearing' stomatopod you speak of (P.richeri is on my list for the collectors to seek), so even if you can tell me the name of the place you saw it at, I can contact them myself and request a pic for I.D.

cheers

GRUMPY GIRLS!

Well albeit on 2 different scales....

I like to inhibit a monstrous theme to the spearers (specifically the larger ones) as they seem (to me) the most scary and amazing, that's one end and not the end I intend to describe as 'beloved family member'.

My reference to the above being a family member are of those that you get as hitchhikers (for us Aussies) this is mostly 99% of the time a small Gonodactyl sp. which to me is practically harmless but only to the small CuC members along with in my view very cute (specifically in there active interactive personalities). So this is the type that I refer to as 'beloved family member'

Leave the large spearers for those that don't mind being grave-diggers.
