My Ultimate Multi Mantis System(s)

I went collecting today and managed to get a bunch of live food for my smashers along with a couple fish for my spearers =) unfortunately I think my eyes were to big for one of the fish and so not sure even The Leviathan could take it down due to the fishes sheer size....so it may either go back or I'll just keep it (its a Bream :D...)

However I did manage to get a variety of crabs for my smashers ranging from tiny finger nail sized (for the smallest smashers) rite up to about 10-15cm wide =D and all sorts in between, so there all just perfect ;)

Obviously I couldn't wait to see how my largest smasher would fair against one of the largest crabs I caught and I must say...the crab got completely dominated!

<iframe width="720" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3uQe2Jp45iw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Originally the crab had 2 claws but I was hesitating to pick it up (mostly due to lack of gloves) if it weren't coated in mud and hence hopelessly slippery I would of picked it up by hand but as it was I had to use my steel tongs and in the process it dropped the claw that it grabbed the tongs with.

Fear not....I did get a second, same sized crab with both claws still attached =) I am surprised how fast it took to adapting to the tank its in (with all my live food) it has dragged a bunch of sand over itself with only its eyes poking out of the sand much like a spearing mantis =)

Next up for a test is Maximus and a good sized Box Crab (got many box crabs the 2 main types I found were Box crabs & what I think is porcelain crabs (or they share the same style of claws and they sit the same way just not the aquarium colored, brown/black all over).

Was really excited by how quickly and easily I found it all, about 50 crabs in 50mins :lol2: I was keeping a keen eye out for mantis shrimps but couldn't see any...I did pick up half a dozen pistol shrimps though =) they are the black and white/clear striped type (there like a black variation of the tiger pistol) all of these animals were everywhere, under any rock which made it so easy to collect it all =), I put 1 of the pistols into the display tank (initially going to put them all there away from the crabs) but then as soon as I put the first one in....that bream I mentioned earlier instantly gobbled it up....LOL ah well I got 5 now.

Some of that looks like fun to feed.

Wasn't that surprised to find it all really....:lol2: when I was younger (10 yrs ago :lol2:) I use to play and swim on the waterfront trying to catch toad fish with my friends at low tide, in the mud etc...I remember all the weird things that I use to see out there mostly crustaceans all sorts of weird crabs and yabbies etc. along with fish too but generally what I assume now are blennies of all sorts. I also remember never ever coming out of the mud (cause I would do it like every weekend) without blood/a cut SOMEWHERE from something and the salt stinging into it xD.

Nonetheless due to remembering the vast amount of crustaceans on my door step under rocks...it serves as a great source of live food albeit I am still a little hesitant to feed any of my smashers pistol shrimps...I got popped by one when I picked it up and although it didn't hurt it startled me enough to quickly put it in the bucket xD...

Here are some of the types I captured in close up maybe some I.D.'s

This is that "Porcelain" crab I mentioned or at least look a like, there similar sized and the claws sit similarly too, however I have no doubt it's different, still if it were more vividly colored it would make for a nice inhabitant, in the rite tank. (For small sized species of stomatopods 50-100mm, so STAND A).

Here is a crab I have no doubt is a nasty one (to a reef) its hairy (a known trait of baddies) and it has big comping claws that are red and have teeth which looks all to carnivorous to me...(For medium sized species of stomatopods 100-200mm, so STAND B).

This crab I assume is a 'Box' crab due to it retreating into a distinct box when threatened (rather then nipping!) for its chunky bulky stature that is a rather let down considering how much it looks like a mud crab (I dunno what it is really...might be a mud crab might be a box crab, mud crabs & box crabs might mean the same damn thing xD LOL?!).
(For medium sized species of stomatopods 100-200mm, so STAND B).

More to come as the results of that large crab I put in with The Juggernaut truly showed this morning and well....it speaks for itself...

MUD CRABS

G'day all :wavehand:

Here in the land down under :lol2: the word 'crab' is often put together with the word 'mud', with the latter being in front of the former after the conversation is realized.

Claw of Mud Crab dropped during acquiring.

Mud Crabs in Australia remind people of 2 primary things, firstly the taste...these crabs are considered the best eating crustacean in the sea by some and why live ones can go for as much as $80/kg. Secondly, the claws...much like stomatopods, mud crabs have an unnatural set of powerful appendages, unlike other crabs, the MudCrab is basically your typical swimmer crab that has undergone a sort of Arnold Schwartz-a-injection of steroids, there claws are extremely powerful.

Just look at it, natures form of brute force...DAYMN NATURE YOU SCARY!

There are many cases in Australia where young people have wanted to test there endurance against the grip of a MudCrab claw on there finger with often devastating results, these claws are designed to completely crush. Sometimes there are cases where a fisherman has captured a 'muddy' (common term down here) and during the photo whilst holding the crustacean incorrectly...the animal has well, performed acts considered more inclined for your missus and at the same time a far less painful manner (unless your one of them) (by the way if you still don't get it...I am talking about the crabs claw grabbing your D**K! Yes it has happened..for some reason a few times).

This claw could easily do damage to my hands, once the claw wraps around...NOTHING will get it free...

The Mud Crab is an often brought up by being very tough which they certainly are, I mean you put this in a tank with any other crab that I can think of and it will rip it apart, the claws mixed with the nigh impenetrable carapace of the animal makes its well, a 'tank' the only real threat from other crabs are that of its own species as these guys are notorious cannibals, that is threats from other crabs....

The Juggernaut is no mere crab...he is the worlds most dominant predator and he exercised his will over the crab last night, enough to make me look at the now mangled crab and freeze momentarily...

I mean this is an animal that when ordered in restaurants warrants the use of a highly specialized tool specifically designed to brake its insanely powerful claws and carapace, if not done rite, will result in a good stabbing from the spines on the carapace as there are dozens, I have personally seen many people order up mud crab at restaurants only then needing to keel over onto there knee in order to brake the carapace on the claw then gasping and shouting in victory...who is the real victor, took a full grown man all his might to brake a crabs claw... :) if it were the other way around I am sure the mud crab could easily brake any part of a human if its claw got hold.

The Juggernaut tossed around the Mud Crab like it were nothing but a mere food article and that it was, a truly tasty one at that, Juggy got 5star food last night and I am positive he enjoyed every last miniute of it =) brings a whole new meaning to 'not playing with your food' ?

In the video you posted above. What is the substrate with the really big pieces called (is it just coral rubble)? anywhere I could buy it online?

Its just coral rubble pieces range in size from 1inch to 2inchs long, not sure where you can buy it since being Australian I must buy locally most of the time.

This evening I finally finished a 4day long endeavor, I made my 6th 'Test' Movie and I think this one requires special attention...

After each test movie I always watch it before making it public (like any good director :D) essentially watching the fruits of my labor and checking for flaws, albeit by the time I export it from the editor its in good shape (since watching it in there multiple times), nonetheless from the previous 5, I was always happy with the results (specially #4 as it took me the longest amount of time to make and hence was most detailed).

But as for the previous ones, I think this is by far my best work to date, I have never been more happy with how it turned out.

Takes a lot of time to make these films...every 0.001 of a sec from music and film is broken down (mostly for the music so its all in tune), I'm really happy with this one and I know I have started some kind of craze back here and in the states too :D I have seen some of my videos (mostly the test movies) linked on random facebook accounts xD.

Either way I am just waiting for this to upload online then its good to go =D

I that in the video it shows the Juggs just chill’en redecorating the cave. Then along comes the Unwelcomed Guess (dinner) and he pops it just enough to say go away. Once done the Juggs pulls that crab into the cave where he cleaned out and places the crab in that vary spot he cleaned up. I guess he was just setting the table.

Well he certainly pummeled it into the nether and had a good feed on quality meat too :) having said this I have had some negative reviews (mostly towards people thinking the crab is totally 'clawless' thus not standing a chance...it did have 1 claw remaining as I said however as it walked into The Juggernauts den, it lost it in there, dropped it to escape (you can see it in the video but after that the crab is 'clawless').

I do however have a second same sized but with both claws still =) since that was a decent feed I will wait a few days-week.

Here is Test Movie 6 my greatest to date!

Hope you like =D

Scary stuff!
I bet when Freddy Krueger goes to sleep he has nightmares of these guys.

I'll take that means you like it xD

I will admit..the title is a little dark/hard to read and the quality from youtube isn't as good as what I see on my PC during editing but I can only work with what I got, what I got for now anyway...(going to upgrade video camera (since I am using the Nikon P500 to film as well) but I am going to get a dedicated video camera).

Still I like this one more then the others to date :D
