My Ultimate Multi Mantis System(s)

So your new approach is to treat each tank in the stands as an individual tank with its own filtration, even though they are all collectively one system sharing water? I like this a lot. It for the idea of redundancies will safe guard and make for a more stable set up. I can see this making for a bit more work to maintain equipment wise but that's the trade off. Are you still going sump A and B together?

You mad man"¦"¦"¦"¦"¦.

Well the primary reasoning is for ease of application...it will be much easier (and cheaper) to do this kind of setup then connect them all to a single large sump, not only that but the amount of equipment in the tanks (overflows) will look a little odd/out of place (specially STAND C).

By doing it this way (HOB each stand) the only thing you will see inside the display tanks, which the HOB rests on, is 2 bulk heads the same type you can already see in the tanks to prevent the holes being clogged/passing stomatopods through.

I just hope that the amount of room I have for the refugium is enough for the refugium to be "effective"...

The Juggernaut finally had enough of the huge hermit...

great vid Kharn!definitely enjoyed watching that hahah

I like it too, one of my favorites to date, I think the whole Vin Jones as Juggernauts voice fits in well with the quotes he says specially the end "...I'm the wrong guy to play hide and seek with..." basically the exact motto of a peacock xD

Latest Test Movie and my greatest to date (well I'd like to think so anyway...)

Good job on that video put it up on google and let’s get it to be the first video that pops up on a google search. The only thing I thought you may have left out was the short clip of the fish coughing up blood. If I was new to the hobby and this is the video I saw I think I’d have to get a mantis.

I'm glad you like the videos.

As far as my "Test Movies" go I am trying to replicate something...basically something we see everyday without really taking that much notice...

My inspirations for the movies come from Movie Trailers / National Geographic Adverts / Discovery Channel Adverts (etc.), Ads for shows like "Ultimate Predator" on National Geographic and many many others, except mine are obviously specified to stomatopods.

When I create something that is nigh equal to that which I originally saw that inspired it, is when they will no longer be "Test Movies". Until that time...well I am still learning a lot, rite now I lack knowledge (on the subject of photography/filming/editing etc), along with footage itself (pics/vids of the animals).

Nonetheless I endeavor to strive and get that (initial) perfect "Stomatopod Advert/Film Trailer" so I can continue to pump out more and more, by then knowing how to truly do it!

EDIT: One of the key things to everything I guess, is the music itself many of the pictures can reflect a "mood" of the animal and many of the videos are obviously of "them at there best" which is an energetic dramatic assault, all of which must be taken into account to get it perfect, timing is everything, getting those exact moments of impact to match with the high notes/chords of the music during the song is very hard, let alone trying to keep it all "clean" (or to make sense can't have things skipping etc. it gets noticed), its all very hard and time consuming but I enjoy it (Test Movie 4 took me over 4hrs to make (I consider that long lol)).

I've inspired dozens to keep there own mantis back here in Aus :spin2:

Virtually every 3rd response on a local forum (within Aus) has been "I am setting up a tank for one of these..." or along the lines either way meaning "I'm getting one now!" lol.

The good thing about it is that I am seeing a lot of "easy to keep" species obtained which means there not only listening but its easy to give them information in confidence knowing they have a hardy species, it boosts there confidence in them knowing they have a hardy species too which isn't a (known) reclusive type.

The 2 main species I see here are G.smithii & G.graphurus both of which are awesome pets as you well know of the G.smithii :lol2: (lest we forget :(...)

Here is the first under coat of substrate to the first 'test' aquascape burrow system which I showed a few days ago, the substrate on the board that isn't attached to the PVC is the final coats "thickness" I decided to do a fine aragonite sand first to get into all the small areas, then will move up to the larger stuff, the more layers will help conceal the pvc.

Sorry (about above) had to make room on my account so I had to delete "less then useful" pictures like designs etc, making room for photos of animals =).

Here is The Kraken, I thought I would have a go at photographing a live predation etc. happening for once rather then filming it...

He can smell the intruder in the tank and so begins to remove the barricade of coral around the entrance to his dwelling...

Intruder spotted further investigation required...upon contact the unknown inhabitant brought forth its long thin claws ready to attack but The Kraken would have none of it...

With the intruder now prey, subdued and The Kraken holding it my the head whilst munching on the preys eyeball...victory to The Kraken, as he stands in acknowledgement.

Killing the prey proved an easier task then getting it back into The Krakens own den...in a designer flaw/eyes to big for stomach or in this case home...the prey was to big for the dens entrance, so The Kraken began to enforce his will upon the entrance itself treating it like an intruder and throwing things out in order to get this phat tasty prawn into his lair to feast.

Alas for all his might there was something amiss...the dens entrance was free enough for his victim to fit...but the "victim" was still not moving as if 'stuck'...his victim was alive! Clinging for dear life to the side of the rock but all for naught, The Kraken realized swiftly that his "victim" had not yet succumbed and so, darted out, cracked the head twice, leaving the now truly victim, in a light spasm...

At last, The Kraken can feast upon his now true victim, sure enough that it is not only dead...but capable of fitting into his den...one last look from The Kraken rite at the camera as you can see so clearly...the evil eye, to the victor go the spoils.

All this commotion stirred up another inhabitant of not necessarily the same stand...

Rocky wanted to know what all the commotion was about feeling somewhat left out in the bottom of STAND A...

I fed him after I took the pics and am lucky I did so, not only was he hungry but...there was nothing to capture! He shot out of his Acan encrusted live rock, like out of some sort of slow motion movie scene where the baddy and good guy are locked in combat whilst falling, except Rocky just pounded that shrimp like a mother and then took it to his burrow, all so fast and out of the camera that there was nothing to show in the end ='[

Either way his "upset" nature before hand made it very easy to get pictures of him up close since he was rite up at the front of the glass as if trying to see whats going on, he likes to "Charge" where by he will throw up a threatening display, crawl back a bit slowly, then move forward rapidly and trying to make himself even wider or more openly displayed, all in all really cute =D

This seedy bastard gave me a fright last night, first time its happened in a long time, I noticed at lights out that he had breached his entrance and was now "on guard", in a "jokingly" manner I decided that whilst the lights were off I would run my finger like a worm on the outside above him...he struck the glass as if to take a fish really fast and it set me back a step, startled me as usually when I do it they just follow my finger with there eye stalks, first time Morgoth has really reached up and come out to try and grab it...

More to come!

Here is The leviathan taking a Live Shrimp.

Rather funny at first and it will be one that I chop up later for a "comedy" (The Mighty Leviathan afraid of a feeder prawn...) originally as you will see, the prawn steps on him and The Leviathan retreats into his burrow, however after that well...his normal nature comes back you will see.

You have an inspiring collection and setup. Looking forward to seeing your attempt at the mud setup. It's something that interests me. I am considering my options.

Dude really another antheus.?. Lol those are pricy fish state side.

See what’s funny about this is most of your readers don’t know about your aversion to feeding humbugs. I know the reason you don’t get humbugs anymore but still its funny that you’ll put in antheus but no humbugs.

More a matter of what I get really, can't exactly pick from a whole lot...also I prefer to get fish too large to fit through the cube holes in the egg crate sheet or the gap either side of it when the sheets in place (even though its a small gap...small fish can get through), by doing this I can walk away and leave the camera running.

As far as the live "food" goes I get what I either get given or buy from the LFS (so far Chromii/Anthia(1 type these) are the cheapest and even there expensive...) I do have other fish which have been given to me like a pair of Clarkii clowns as to whether they are a true pair or not I do not know.

One of the primary reasons I do not like humbugs is that, whilst they survived the spearers for a long time...they plague the other fish...I got 4-5inch fish I caught from fishing that get chased around by the lone tiny 1inch humbug that is left....humbugs are annoying and they annoy other fish, I don't want my live food to be all torn up like its half dead etc.
