N/P reducing pellets (solid vodka dosing)

the reactor i would use this in feeds directly into my UV sterilizer

would that be an issue?

If you do this, then the bacteria will be killed and all the nitrogen and phosphate will be released in your tank again, slowing down the skimming of bacteria and thus inhibiting the removal of UV. I would not use UV in your tank in combination with the pellets.

I`m gonna post a poor quality pic from the start of the BP test (sept 09) mand another poor quality one from now.
Colors are much better when seen here live than on the pic`s (bad camera)
sorry that i acn`t show you guys some descent pictures :sad1:

do notice the PE expansion of the purple montipora digitata , as the expansion of the brown zoa colony in the middle.
And the dark spot under the monti on the first pic is a thick carpet of GHA as on the right rock who is now very white also the sand is much more whiter now.
And the biggest advantage is that i can wait 3 days now to clean the glass :)

greetingzz tntneon :)

It has been roughly four days and I have already seen improvement.
I highly doubt it is going to do anything in 4 days. its not a miracle product. Takes time for bacteria to grow on the pellets,

I am on my third week and noticed my acropora colours getting better.
Still not sure if it is the product as i am always had zero nitrates.

I fluidize the pellets. will we see anything on the pellets to confirm if bacteria is on them?

I forgot to mention that I am also dosing ZeoBac as well. All I'm saying is that I've seen a noticeable change ever since adding the pellet reactor.

I have read the forum but have not seen this question answered directly. Has any one use the bio pellets in a trickle filter instead of bio ball. My sump is an old style wet dry trickle filter with out bio balls. I would have to make a tray out of acrylic to contain the pellets but would it work effectively in the open air while being kept wet by trickling water. Seams like their would not be a huge build up of bacteria due the fact they would not be submerged under water so no agitation would be required like in a Zeovet system. What do you think, good idea or bad. I am looking for something cheaper that a denitrator but don't have time allowance for daily vodka dosing.

Fellow reefers that have already began using pellets, can you please post results 4-5 weeks into treatment. Also, method being used, reactor, bag, etc. System stats, amounts and so forth.

I'd like to hear some feedback before spending the $$.

I would like to get away from daily Vodka additions.

Thanks for your help
Mark

I have a bubble trap in my sump that is currently full of bio balls and some LR rubble. Would i be able to place the pellet there? the is about 1800gph running thru there and all the water is nicely oxiginated by the skimmer and overflows before the trap. Only bad part is i would need ALOT of them to fill a 4in wide by 24in long by 6in high area :-/

I just set up a Phosban 550 with the pellets on my 90.
I am presently dosing VV and MB7.
My plan is to gradually reduce the VV as the pellets kick in. The tank is predominately SPS. Will update as changes are noted...

just did the same last week. My tank volume is 125 G net. I currently dose Vodka and MB7. My nitrates and phosphates were undetectable by salifert test kits before I added the biopellets. I do have cyanobacteria in a few areas that seems to be fuelled by the vodka. If i decrease vodka dosing, my nitrates go up and cyano disappears. When I restart vodka, cyano returns and nitrates disappear. This has been going on for 2 years. Vinegar seemed to cause less cyano but I needed a lot of it and it eventually led to low pH.

my plan is to try to reduce vodka dosing by using biopellets and "hopefully" get rid of the cyano and the nitrates.. we'll see if this works but i am not too optimistic..

thebanker,

What is the volume of the ViaAqua reactor? Didn't see it through link.

I was thinking of using Phosban 150 on my 120.

Those of you using Phosban 550, how much NP pellets are you using?

Thanks

I started with 500 ml and will gradually increase to 1 liter ( i am too chicken to put it all in at once). there is enough room in the phosban 550 to easily accommodate 1 liter and allow it to be completely fluidized. i use a maxijet 1200 and the pellets are in constant motion within the reactor.

It is 14 x 4 inches. if you subtract the space taken up by the dividers and sponges it is about 11 x 4 inches. I love the reactor overall. It is very easy to set up and maintain since you do not need to align the cap with the central pipe in order to close it; the input and output tubes are located below the level of the cap). However, it was designed for slow flow rates (45-50 GPH). It uses soft slip on connectors that work well with that flow rate, but if you go up to 200 GPH or so, there is a risk of it leaking. I discarded the soft connectors and used reinforced flexible tubing with cable ties... It works great and I have pressure tested it using a Mag 9 for 3 hours => no leak!, so I am sure it can handle the maxijet 1200 easily...

I know that is a lot more info than you asked for, but like you, I had trouble finding much info on the 550 before I bought it ;)

hope this helps

sam

would i be able to put these pellets in my bulkreefsupply duel reactor? if so should i run them with out gfo? the reason i ask is that i read that these pellets require high flow and gfo only needs enough flow to make it tumble gently. also what chamber would i put it in before or after the gac? i am very interested in these pellets. my nitrates have been stuck around 50 and some sps are really struggling. thanks

Due to space limitations, I use a nano media reactor....I still run Phosban at the moment, but hope to only run the NP Biopellets only in the future.

I have been running these pellets for a few weeks now and have noticed some improved color in my SPS, especially Acros. Growth is also good.

I have also been dosing MB7, but I am going to stop this week.

I have pretty high flow through the pellets so they all gently tumble. Water is very clear. My nitrates were steady zero before using the pellets and this continues.....

I am looking forward to having used these for a couple of months or so and will post feedback at that time.

I've got 500ml in mine and its about 38.734% full (Phosban 550)

From in the Bayou...

I have also been using N/P Bio pellets for about 3 weeks.I was doing the vodka dosing with also MB 7. I have stop dosing vodka for the last 3 weeks and tonight I stopped MB 7 . I did notice some brown stuff on the sand today.I hope that will clear up soon..... Will post pic later as to how this goes...
I hope this works... I also have tag on to this thread and read everything to do with N/P Bio Pellets..Later :jester:
