N/P reducing pellets (solid vodka dosing)

how long have you been running the pellets ?

Yep the output rests perpendicular and right on the skimmer inlet.. it is getting the majority if not all of the reactor outflow. The skimmer is an ATB 8.5 running super wet and is more than capable.

It may be too soon to say if carbon is escaping the reactor..

The dinos might be getting their carbon from CO2 as the room stays fairly saturated with it at times. The rod bacteria in the sump could be feeding on the compounds released by the dinos as they seem to be dying back the last couple of days. Hard to say..

The pellets do work though and quite well.. otherwise the dinos would have overcome my tank given as much it is fed.

I just threw out an old test kit. Two new NO3 test kits show less than 5ppm NO3. Salifert reads ~5ppm, Elos reads ~2.5ppm. The old Salifert read 25pmm. So, I'll recant my statement below for now :).

Unfortunately, since it was a bunk kit I was using before the pellets, guess that means I don't have much to go by in terms of seeing if the pellets helped lower my NO3 over the last 6 weeks.

Indeed.... I'm going to finish this bag, but have not seen any results that would make me want to buy more.

One other effect I have noticed. When I started running the sulphur denitrator my Emperor and Hippo both developed HLLE. Nothing I was doing was reversing or eliminating it. Once I stopped the denitrator and switched to the pellets, the HLLE has been slowly healing. You could say the removal of the denitrator is the cure, but in any event whatever bacteria is escaping into the tank from the pellets, if any after running through the skimmer, is not having the same effect as what was escaping the denitrator.

This could be significant. HLE might possibly be a result of sulphur toxicity. I wonder if anyone has looked into this.

Is it possible that the Salifert was testing for total nitrogen, vs just nitrates. If that's the case then dividing the results by 4.4 would give you results similar to what you're getting now.

Just checked the box in trash and it says "Salifert NO3 Nitrate" on a sticker on a Silicate test box. The sticker notes that they ran out of boxes, hence stickers. So, could be a mix up, or possibly kit no good. The expiration date is 10/07 though.

I also tested PO4 this evening (Merck kit). No change since 2/15/10 - somewhere between the 0.18 to 0.25 colors. Pellets started on 4/1, amount doubled on 5/12.

I do run a very large skimmer, with ozone tagged to shut off when Orp hits 425. So it would be highly unlikely for me to get into an O2 depletion scenario.

I wonder if the ozone is affecting the bacteria on the pellets from forming. I have hread ozone shouldn't be used in bacteria systems. Just a thought.

This is true.
I run full zeovit with a carbon and bacteria source - Ozone and/or UV are not to be used.

I used both Ozone and UV during the 4 weeks with this, and bacteria have formed in the reactor, and nitrates are falling, so I do not see where it has prevented the pellets from working. Could obviously have slowed formation I imagine.....

I just started mine 5 days ago and will post my results. Starting out with 400ml

I have been using 2 liters of the N/P pellets for 6 weeks now with great results as far as the red slime is concerned. I have been having a small issue with red slime and have not been able to get it under controll until I started running the pellets. Prior to running the pellets I was testing 0 on phos and silcates and around 1 to 2 on nitrates. Along with a ton of current from two MP 40s I should have not had the red slime. It has taken about four weeks of running the pellets to see a change but the red slime has almost completely disappread now and all my corals and spunges look much better. I Keep seeing posts that talk about a big drop in PH and a issue with the tankgetting cloudy. I have not had either of these issues. The tank is as clear as it has ever been and my PH is staying at 8.3.
I am running 1 liter in a nextreef reactor and 1 liter in a home made reactor, which actually works better than the nextreef. In both reactors I am running a pretty big pump to keep them tumbling. With only six weeks under my belt I have not seen anything but good with this product. Hope this continues and I will keep posting my findings. I did have a question, I noticed that some people are having the output of the reactor on the skimmer side and some people have the output past the skimmer. Mine is running past the skimmer, so I was wanting to know what the advantage there is of skimming the output of the reactor.

bro this is too slow and u should get out this thread on pellets too

hi cercm,

by slow, do you mean the flow rate? I have them tumbling like a light boil. I can turn the flow up even more but I need to seal the TLF inlet tube with silicon or else I get a small leak. Thanks for the thread reference, I'll be sure to check it out.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you let us know what makes the DIY reactor better than the Nextreef? I was planning on getting the Nextreef reactor if I got good results from the pellets so for now I'm using a TLF reactor.

I have been using a 500ml bag of NP Biopellets in a two little fishes phosban reactor for 2 months in my 140 gallon tank. For me this product is nothing short of miraculous. I Have always had phosphate and nitrate problems, tones of hair algae, and red cyno. In addition all I could ever grow were palys and other corals never made it far. Now I have tons of zoas going nutz and I have new SPS frags growing quickly. In the last two weeks all my hair algae has been vanishing and for the very first time 0 phosphates and zero nitrates. After two years of fighting with my reef I am now suddenly reminded why I built it in the first place.

I just tested for N and P...

P is still zero...

and N is finally down and staying down to 40. No rise yet. Usually after a WC it goes down like that, only to return to 80-160 in a week. This time it hasn't gone above 40, so I'm a little hopeful. Not much but a little.

I plan to do another big WC in the next 2 days. We will see if the nitrates return after that or not.

Great news , this could implement that it removes phosphates too .
I only had some nitrates and GHA in my system , and i know there where people who wanted to know whether the pellets could remove phosphates too.

greetingzz tntneon :)

I'm about to try the pellets myself but wanted to know if i can still run carbon at the same time in a different reactor
