N/P reducing pellets (solid vodka dosing)

I can not imagine different bacteria strains by adding a slightly different food source, but then again, I could be wrong.

MSHUR, according to one of the threads the shape lock and freindly plastics are the same. These can be obtained cheaper if you are willing to take the chance. I am and will post when I have results. I think it was Randy that said they are the same.

Thank you
i will post my results as well..i wanna order 500mlof vertex pelets from PA

OMG 1600+ posts and counting..... and I only seen one before and after picture. Sure there are a few this is what I have now pictures, but I need a day 1 picture, week 1 picture, week 2 and so on. I have a headache now.

Lets say I want to join in on this adventure of NP Biopellets. I've got a camera I will post before and after pictures.

Heck here's a picture for free:

Here's the catch. I need some simple things answered.

I have a BRS Reactor, I assume by one of the video's in the thread you don't use the smaller cylindar that goes inside the reactor. So how do you keep the pellets from flying out?

I have a 70 gallon tank with a 35 gallon sump, I am assuming by what I read that I can just use a bit less than the 500ml of pellets.

The other part seem to be that you need a good skimmer. I have a swc 160.

So I think i'm ok as far as equipment. If not then this won't happen with me and someone else please take over and post the before and afters.

I feel for you "help" but in my case the Before and after would be the same. The tank alone was not my issue it was the quality of the water. I can't show you a before and after pic of my high nitrates in the tank...it all looks the same. I say this because in my case I have a Magnificent Foxface that consumes all the algae that I have. So even though I have High NO3 I do not have any excessive Algae growth. The Pics are the same. I simply wanted to experiment with these to see if I can take a high NO3 level and reduce it using just hte pellets and a skimmer. My NO3 was 80-160 at times...and NO they have not managed to lower them...all I can figure is that the pellets have helped to slow the build up of nitrates, but not actually reduce them.

On a side note...I am considering getting MORE...say another 500ml to bring my total to 1L of pellets. I didn't do that originally because the packaging says that 500ml should be enough for up to a 100g tank. I now want to see if my tank just has an abnomally high level of NO3. And if adding more will start to allow the pellets to actually REDUCE the Nitrates.

Barring this idea working I'm going to call them a failure and snake oil and crap...(no I'm just kidding they do work for some people). But really I will just continue to use them till they are used up and then not rush to get anymore for my current tank. Unless without them the NO3 levels spike REALLY fast...then I will put them back online and help to controll them again.

I feel for you. Your going into $100+ on this stuff. Mine would not really bother me if I could find something to eat the type of algae I have, it would not even have to clean the tank just around the coals would be fine.

I have a pair of female molly's acclimating as I speak.

Anyway good luck, and post some pictures anyway, I like to see tanks that need help as much as the ones that are beautiful. Heck there are problems out in the ocean that are worse than our tanks atm. "oil anyone!" :jester:

I believe at start up one could use too much pellet media. Reducing nutrients too fast may kill some corals. sps is also sensative to this and may bleach or STN or RTN.

I tend to be over aggressive when working on this. Changing carbon more often, changing ZEO rock, adding GFO. Corals either love it of pop off!

Generally it is weak LPS corals, as well as Monti and Stylo sp corals.

I'm not familiar with that HOB filter...but I'm sure there could be a way to utilize it successfully. But having said that it would probably not be easier than getting a dedicated reactor for them.

on a different note. Tomorrow is one week since my large water changes brought the no3 down from 80+ to around 20. And I'm happy to report that it's stayed there for a week. May not seem like a big deal...but for me it means that I finally haven't had a RISE in NO3 in a week. Maybe they are starting to work.

You have a test kit that goes down to .008? What is the accuracy?

Ya... I always do that. It gives numbers for both but I always seem to fixate on the top. Anyway... the .008 and .015 are different spots and properly stated it would be .024 and .045 respectively. Thanks for catching that.

Agree 100%. I started with 500ml for my tank and think I should have gone a bit less to begin with, then added teh rest a few weeks later. A few of my corals defintely got stressed when I introduced the pellets, some are still recovering from the bleached/dry look, while others looked fine all along.

Hi i am gonna try these on my system, i read that people recomend that you have the reacotr before the skimmer, how ever i only got place for mine after the skimmer, will this be a problem?
