Naka how many holes, and of what size do you have in your overflow box? What are the dimensions of that box?Are you happy with the ehiem as a return pump,do you think the 1262 would have been to much flow for you? Thanks.

Steve, I just shut the return off for couple of hours, and just let the vortech and CL move all the pappone around in the tank.
Pappone is about 1/4" thick.

ACLS is set for short cycle during the winter. As it approches summer the light period gets to about 13 hours a day. I always set my date to November to February. I don't find it necessary to have my lights on more than 6 hours.

I have 2 x 1" holes for my return and 1.5" for my drain. You actually only need 1 return. The box is about 12" wide.
You can use 1262 instead, but I find that unnecessary also. I think 1260 is plenty for return. I don't think 1262 is too much flow, I just think 1260 is more than enough for my return.

I used to have a Solar dimmer which did the seasons.
I never changed it, but I always thought of using the seasons opposite. Such as summer solstice to winter solstice.
Why? Because I was home a lot more in the winter months, and also heat issues, lights were on shorter periods during the summer.

Naka,
Thanks for your message. I really need to understand the CL system. I understand what I have now which seems like a closed loop to me-----drilled overflow to refugium and then the return back up to the overflow return stand pipes.
I am ordering a new tank and want to avoid usind sand and plenum with 2 maxijets like I have now. The idea is to run the plumbing for the overflow and the CL through the crawlspace to the garage 10 feet away --where I can have a sump, chiller, skimmer, etc. everything out there so I'll have more room for the top off RO water. I guess what I'm asking is the overflow/refugium circle like I have now one loop and then you do another one from the holes in the bottom of the tank(like yours) out to the garage and then back to the outlet holes in the bottom? How many do you use for the intake and returns? It looks like you have quite a few drilled in the bottom. Also, without sand (such as I have now with the plenum) how do you keep lifestock from getting sucked in by the flow of the outlet holes?
Thanks for having patience with someone who hasn't the knowledge of a CL design and the mechanics of how it works?
I want to order the tank within the next few days and I want to do it right this time.
Many thanks! You are kind to share your knowledge.
Gia

i think most of the guys have another intake or whole in the tank for a closed loop. Meaning it doesnt go through your sump. The advantage I see is less plumbing. Remember less plubing means more flow for your tank. Then there are no pumps inside. More room for your fish and other stuff. So 2 hole minum for a closed loop. They put something like a screen over the intake so nothing gets sucked in. Hope that helps.. I am still a rookie myself..This is agreat place for everyone to share knowledge. Good Luck..

Naka any new PICS

Thanks, Eric. Does anyone know of a diagram for a CL?

Naka, are you happy with where you had the holes drilled in your tank for the CL? In looking at the picture of your tank bottom - which holes are intake and which outflow?

Hope your new little baby is sleeping thru the night now - play him some ocean wave sounds - very soothing.

Wow, what a read. I just saw this thread and couldn't stop clicking on the next page. :eek2: I really enjoyed it and look forward to more. Amazing pics BTW.

Oh and congratulations on the birth of your son. How's he doing?

Gia, you can actually drill the intake hole for the CL inside the overflow box.

Paul, thanks for asking. Noah's been sleeping 5+ hours starting last week :) My wife and I just stare at him while he sleeps. We love him so much.

That's a great idea, then I don't have to worry about anything getting caught in the intake!
If you could have your tank drilled again, would you put the input holes any differently?
I am finally understanding a CL now (thanks to all the great people at RC) and will order my OceanMotions 4way tomorrow and give GC's my hole placement diagram. My overflow will be on the rightside - since the tank will be visible from the other 3 sides (starphire) I'm trying to decide whether to make my dimensions 72x18x31 or 72x20x29 The second size is the very most I could go on width 20" in the space I have, but will cost about $300 more. I want this to be my final tank but am having trouble deciding. Any thoughts?

James, since my tank will be a similar set up, do you mind sharing which OM4 version did you pick?

I also have a RK2 and love it. Thanks!

My 2 little girls are always helping me with my fish tank. They always ask me what kind of fish or coral it is, and I tell them the exact name and they repeat. It will surprise you later when they repeat that name again out of no where. They even get mad at me if I went to the fish store and I didnt take them. They are going to have their own rimless tank when they grow up!! ;)

As Marshal said make the most of every day and take lots of pics, they grow so fast.

Seems like yesterday my wife was nudging me at 6am to get up "we need to go". I got up and started putting on my work cloths :D . She says "no, my water broke at 1am we need to go to the hospital" :eek2: .

16hrs of labor later that ended in a "C" section and watching my family sprint down the hospital hallways to be the first to see my son was a absolute priceless memory.

He is 6yrs old now and tomorrow we will be taking him to his first T-ball practice.

What a ride :)

OK, back on track here, looks like your getting some good growth.

Take Care,
Chad

James, Wonderful tank, spent late last night and this morning reading the thread :hmm5: so clean and well thought out! Congrats on the new addition to the family :) Seems like life is good in Houston Tx.!
How bout them Cowboys.... take care and I will be tagging along. Steve:thumbsup:

Thanks guys. I'm sure my son will be going to Fish Gallery w/ me soon. It's nice to stay home on Saturdays watching Noah. Since he sleeps 3 to 4 hours after feeding, I'm carrying around the baby monitor to work on my tank :)

Gia, I have the version 3 OM. You could place the outlets towards the front of your tank, but visually I didn't like that. I would go for bigger dimensions.

What is pappone that you are using and where do you get it?

Its a mixture of food that you can make...

More info can be found in this thread...

It seems like if you want to have an extrodinary tank you need to live in texas. Us North Carolinians need a couple more tanks like this.
