i ma just setting up a tank after a break form the hobby. I am really liking the picasso clowns but i am also really liking the naked clowns as well.
Any problems from getting 1 of each? will they pair up? eventually breed?

i really want maroon clowns but my tank (40 breeder) just isnt big enough from what im told

I think the naked clowns look..."wrong". But, the are pretty unique. You should be able to do 1 of each. I've also seen plenty of maroons in a 40 breeder. I would do the smaller clowns though. More room for other stuff! What are your stocking plans?

the only defenate plan for stocking is a pair of clowns, a lawnmower bleeny and a mandrin when the tank is ready, other than that its pretty open. But i would like to have the option to add somthing else if i want to.
I have been told that if i do maroons in that size of tank i wont be able to keep much else in there with them

As far as I know, they are both "ocellaris", so as long as you introduce them together, I would think they would mate up. If you can find them of slightly different sizes, then you should have a better chance...

I have a pair of naked's and also picassos (not in the same tank) but I think if u were to mix them u wouldn't have any problems with them as long they are small enough, but I would rather get a pair of either one instead of mixing them.

If you like the Maroons get them. When they start to breed & mature is when it might be a problem with new fish. It also depends on the type of new fish you try to add.

You'll have some time if you get a pair of juvenile maroons.

If you plan out your stock list I don't think there will be many problems.

you can mix those two clowns. maroons can be a problem in that size of a tank only because they are very aggressive and will attack all the other fish.

I've got a pair of maroons in a 45. Honestly, I've never seen her more than a foot away from the anemone but she's only about 3 inches long at the moment. There used to be 2 dwarf angels in there but I decided to make it into a tank for the marroons alone.

so if i go with maroons, they should not be aggressive with fish that they "grow up" with? only new introductions?

That was my experiance with them. Anything that was already in the tank had no problems but anything new (even crabs) had to take a bit of abuse.

Now that it's just them and the CUC, everything seems to be alot mellower in the tank.

Back when I kept GSM, they went after existing tank mates once they started spawning.

Well my Maroons put up with my 6" Cortez angel & he sits right next to their eggs. Of course when the female tried to drive him off early on he just sat there.

I recently put a Harlequin shrimp in the tank. The female nipped at it once & got nipped back by the shrimp. She leaves it alone as long as it doesn't go near the eggs.

I agree though, once they start spawning they're definately more aggressive when there are eggs present.

Like I mentioned earlier.......it depends on what the new fish is. If it's some wimpy dither fish it's gonna get wacked.

If it's a psuedochromis or maybe a faster type wrasse it will problably be okay.
