NG, I had a G2 and yes it a good idea to clean clean the foam slide bubble trap thingamabob!. I made it a habit to clean it every time I clean the collection cup. I just ran it under hot water for a few minutes and let it dry and that seemed to do the trick. If you have a good bubble trap in you sump set-up I wouldnt use it at all.

I have the G3 and I do clean that foam thing everytime I clean the cup. I rinse it and ring it out until the water comes that comes out of it is clear.

Hmmm... so all that sponge thing is a bubble trap? I've never cleaned it once... lol... maybe thats the source of my nitrates?!?! NARF!

If I take it off will it cause any problems other then bubbles?

thanks :)

Thanks! I feel stupid I had no idea it needed to be cleaned until I actually stopped and thought about it last night!

Tunze Top Off Update!

Okay, we battled through it tonight and spent the last couple of hours figuring everything out and testing it to make sure it works. I think it's all setup properly now. It's working good so far... about every 15 minutes we hear it kick on for a few seconds and then it goes off. The lights on the controller switch to yellow (pump) then back to green (normal level.)

I would like everyones opinion and/or comments please on if this was setup properly or if I made a mistake. I'm scared I messed something up.

I had to put the saftely valve above the normal sensor valve due to the fact that we had to combine the two mount pieces to make it work.. our 29 was too high. The instructions showed it was okay to do this (i think) so please let me know if it looks okay!

Finished setup. The reef crystals bucket is the resovoir.

You can see the fuge in the middle. I have the lamp setup on it now on a reverse schedule. 12 hours on, 12 hours off. Is that good?

Closer view.

Can you see our carefully thought out electrical scheme in the back? LoL

Close up of the second safety valve.

Sorry for the bad photo. You can see right at the water level the primary sensor.

Another view.

Here is the controller. I put it on the side of the tank so I could see the lights. The green light is on but hard to see.

If anyone sees anything wrong please let me know. I would love to hear any feedback either to fix it or to sleep better.

Thanks =)

I had that issue with my EuroReef, the riser got nasty and so did the nitrates/phosphates. Can you do a gate valve mod to it? It's an easy do it yourself, costs $20 or so, and gives you much better control of the type of skimmate.

Mmmm... not sure if i know what that is. Someone told me once about some mod to the ASM but if it's what I remember if you mess it up you ruin it?

I think the ER & ASM skimmers are pretty much the same. This is not a drilling modification, so you don't risk the skimmer's life here. The riser tube (with the foam bubble trap) that moves up and down to control the bubble level in the neck of the skimmer is removed. Replace it with a short section of PVC, connected to a T. The gate valve is on the "right" branch of the T, connected to an elbow pointing down with more pvc (the skimmer drain) down under the sump's water line. The idea behind this is that the gate valve provides you control of the bubble height much more finely than the riser tube. It allows you to skim wet or dry, and change it without getting your mits in wet in the nitrate (bubble) trap. There is probably more detailed info in the diy forum.

Hi NanoGirl,
I was wondering what is your pump? does it increase temperature when you run it? also, do you run chiller at all?

Thanks, sorry too lazy to read through your thread,

Return pump? It's a Mag 5. I'm not sure if it adds heat to the water or not since I'm always running it... but I don't have a heat issue. No chiller.

Your top off reservoir should have a lid over it, just to keep stuff from getting into your pure water. Other than that, it looks good.

Here's what the gatevalve mod for my Euro-reef 12-2 looks like:

Thanks Marc,
I figured someone had the expertise/time to illustrate things the right way, nice job! What is the white "cap" at the top of the riser tube? A drilled cap, solid? What is the benefit?

Nanogurl, if the search function isn't working go to google or yahoo and search for something followed by "site:reefcentral.com" without the quotes. It will limit the results to only info on reefcentral and best of all IT ALWAYS WORKS!

For example you would type

sugar glider site:reefcentral.com

100 bucks says the first few hits are from your thread......
