Narrowed down the list, feedback to help pick a tang?

cool, it's all good...
I treat every fish I add with prazi and/or cupramine and qt for a min of 12 weeks...
even if, after a few weeks the fish seems healthy I will almost always (99.9%) use prazi but maybe not cupramine (a very strong med) depending on the fish for ex., centropyge do not react well to cupramine..
you def want to qt for 8 weeks min in order to help ensure your dt is never contaminated...
and remember to never use Prime or any other ammonia binding agent when using cupramine...
good luck and keep us posted...

I'm going to be difference and suggest a lavendar tang. I hope to have one someday when I have a decent sized display tank.

I keep coming back to the Lavender Tang as well, but have almost decided against consideration because I can't seem to find one anywhere?

I see them in stock on Liveaquaria sometimes, if you have your heart set on one just be patient. You could also see if your LFS can order one in for you.

Maybe they're a seasonal thing, I've seen quite a few, maybe just gotta be patient. Be careful with them though. I had one in my 90, which I later sent off to a 300ish gallon because he got too big and aggressive. Even in that 300 he was a bit aggressive. But I've seen them be very passive and good fish as well.

I was always under the impression that you should only treat for a disease if you know the fish has it, not proactively just for the sake of it. I have never treated with anything in my QT tank unless the fish shows signs of a disease and it has worked well so far. I mainly got this from my reasearch and from Bob Fenner and Mark Callahan on their QT procedure recommendations. As far as QT length, I don't see why you would need to go past 30 days (unless of course it had a disease and you treated for it, then 30 days past the last sign of disease). Ich or velvet will definitely show in that period if it is there, based on their life cycle. Humaguy has been around the block and I have read and liked a lot of what he has to say in other threads so I would definitely consider his advice though.

I too never use to proactively treat fish for disease even without any signs of disease. People who are much more experienced then me have suggested this to me and I follow it now religiously. Snorvich, MrTuskfish and Humaguy are who I credit with the disease knowledge I have outside of reading books. The tank transfer method will work on ich but will do nothing for worms, and with how labor intesive and the every 3 day of transfering the fish with TT I feel it is easier on me and the fish to not use TT method. Although I did it with my Achilles and there was no doubt the fish was ich free. Like Huma mentioned before cupramine is harsh on fish like all copper products are, start slow and make sure you have a test kit that will test for cupramine, since regular off the shelf copper kits don't work with cupramine. The point I'm making with proactively treating is this way you ensure the fish is clear of all worms and disease and if you do this with all of your fish and keep water quality up and and a stress free environment your fish will stay disease free. It's your choice to treat with prazipro or cupramine first, I do prazipro first so I am sure the fish is eating well before starting the cupramine

There ya go, I'm learnin new stuff :)

As far as fish go, I really like the White Tail Bristletooth (Ctenochaetus flavicauda). Check it out. They are somewhat hard to come by but relatively cheap. DD is getting one in this evening...I'm sure it will go fast though.

So I have been putting together my QT supplies over the past week, with the plan being to buy the first fish next weekend. So here is my decision: I have found a 3" white cheek tang at my local store for $45.00, but color-wise, he is basically a brownish grey, and is certainly not a stunner. I do believe he is a white cheek however, and not a powder brown because I don't see any of the red markings? Because I still have a store credit from when I traded in all my fish from my previous tank, I would only be out of pocket about twenty bucks. The other option would be to go straight to Diver's Den. They have a similarly sized white check, but after shipping, it's about $100.00 more.
Any advise? I would imagine that the drab fish here at the LFS would color up with time, good feeding, etc? My thinking is that since I am going to QT anyway, the local fish might be worth the $20.00 gamble? However, I'm sure the Divers Den fish is basically superior looks-wise.
Appreciate any insight.
Thanks.

Okay, so new possibilty I was hoping to get some first hand feedback on. I went into my LFS today to check on the White Cheek Tang they had last week, but it had been sold. However, they have four Powder Browns that have been at the store for several weeks. One in particular looks very energetic, good color, fat, etc. He also ate as soon as they dropped some thawed mysis into the tank. I know that these are notoriously delicate fish, but is finding one that is healthy, and eating a big part of the battle? If I went ahead with my plans to QT and treat proactively with Cupramine make this fish doable? Just trying to figure out if these guys are that much more delicate than the White Cheek? Appreciate the help! Thanks

Powder browns are great tangs. I had one, she wasn''t a ich magnet. A little aggressive to my swallowtail male but not overly. Didn't bother anyone else.

If you still want a lavender saltwaterfish.com usually has them. SWF (initials).com

According Bob Fenner, the white cheek is a lot more delicate. See link (I hope it's legal to post):

Thank you so much for the feedback. As long as nobody at my LFS made a mistake and sold the Powder Brown I put on hold, I think that is the choice I will go with. I have had a sponge filter in my sump next to some live rock for the past few weeks, and will get the QT setup over the next few days, and go pick him up this weekend. I'll keep you posted, and put up some photos after I pick him up. Thanks again to everyone for offering up their advice and experience!
