The most current research available suggests that ALL nautilus populations are vulnerable to exploitation and that the heavily over-fished populations have shown significant declines.
Back to nautilus care: Yes, with the right setup I don't see why advanced hobbyists would not be able to care for a nautilus. However, considering some of the requirements of their husbandry (such as a chilling unit) and also considering their wild population numbers, nautiluses are not really a great choice as a pet.
Research is progressing into wild populations of nautiluses but there is still so much that we do not know...
