Need advice on a lens

Ask your dad to buy you the 50/1.0L and just pay him back little by little every paycheck. That thing is a sexy beast.

I'm guessing you meant to say the f/1.2L? The f/1.0L isn't one you just go out and buy anymore as they're pretty much collectors items :D.

Xtm has suggested the 50 1.2L. Meh, I'd go with something better for the same price range if you were going that high.

Canon's 100mm lens (L series or not) is a great piece of glass. Both versions produce fantastic pictures. The AF is fast and they both provide high quality bokeh. There is no problem using this lens for portraits in addition to using it as a tank lens. Recty in the first response said it would be good for macro.

That said I would never get rid of my 100mm macro as it produces higher quality images than my 24-70L in my opinion.

Carl Zeiss (again my opinion) makes one of the best lenses for a canon DSLR if you want a dedicated landscape (or otherwise still object) lens (their 21mm is incredible). They're all manual focus. If nobody has tried a ZE zeiss on their DSLR you need to (as long as you don't need AF).

The 50mm 1.4 (sigma or canon) is really cheap and a great all around lens. For the low cost I would see this to be a viable gift option and Recty probably has some sample shots in his threads using the lens. This might be the best route. You get auto focus for the cars, quality bokeh and sharpness for portraits, and most importantly a lower cost lens that might be better suited as a gift.

Just my 2 cents, hope this helps.

EDIT: Just now noticed you're using a 40D. I would say go with the 50mm 1.4 of all those I listed. I really like the 100mm but on a crop it would be too long.

Woot Woot!!! ole man was feeling generous and just decided to order me the 10-20 Sigma :) Funny that he always just asks me to order my own Xmas gift since he isn't the greatest on the computer.

He also bought himself an ipad now that he bought himself a Canon 40D as well :)

I will buy the other lenses since they are cheaper. I can get them soon after Xmas

No, the 50 1.0L.

No, I suggested the 50 1.0, not the cheap 1.2.. you know, one of the few lenses that can hang with a Noctilux ;)

I haven't shot with one, but if I shoot Canon I would definitely get one. The closest we have in Nikon mount is the 58 1.2 Noct-Nikkor and it's MF.

Congrats.... I've owned the Siggy 10-20 (aka Wigma) in Nikon mount and I really liked it. Sharp, contrasty, and has good colour rendition. Small lens too. Had I not moved to full frame, I would still have it. It rocks on APS-C.

Thanks!!! I am so excited. Now I can work my way out the range as I don't zoom much.

I mostly do cars and landscapes.

Why would you suggest a lens that most pros can't even afford? If he truly needs a 50 f1, he probably won't be here asking for advice. Don't you think?

I have a Canon 40D. I usually take photos of cars and landscapes. But also want to take shots of my wife and stepdaughter and the tank of course.

I currently have a busted 17-85mm. It broke once before so I have no desire to fix it again.

My dad is going to get me a lens for Xmas and I cannot decide based on the criteria I listed above.

Considering....

A new 17-85mm
A sigma 10-20mm
Canon 100mm
as well as a decent 18-55mm

If I had to choose one knowing the others would take a while to follow, which would you all suggest?

The Sigma 10-20 is a specialized lens, IMHO. I had one but sold it after a year. It was my least used lens since I seldom shoot landscape.

I suggest you look into the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 VC. This lens has decent zoom range, fast, and comes with image stabilization. I have this lens and I really like it. Look it up and read the reviews before you decide.

You probably didn't read my previous post. My dad already ordered the 10-20 for me. And since I primarily shoot cars and landscapes, it is my ideal lens. With my 17-85, I was almost always shooting at 17mm. I had reviewed the Sigma 10-20 for well over a year and everything I have read is great. Most everyone I have talked to that has it loves it.

I will now work my way out the range so I will also look at your suggestion for future purchase. Thanks.

There's nothing that says that wide=landscape. I routinely use very wide lenses to get a unique perspective on closeup images. (I also frequently use my 100-400 for landscapes). They're tools. Don't pigeon hole yourself into one way of thinking.

It's a great lens but if you're shooting landscape, cars, your tank, your wife and your stepdaughter, this lens is not the lens I would recommend.

When he said that he likes to shoot landscape, cars, his tank, and people, It seemed he needed more than a 10-20. If he had a mid range then a 10-20 may be a good thing to add.

This lens is so limiting. If you truly know what you're talking about, you would not recommend this lens for his purpose. Ultimately, it's his choice.

Oh, BTW, I never said that the 10-20 can ONLY be used for landscape. I purchased and used it mostly for landscape. You may want to read it again.

Looks like I am causing trouble.

This lens IS the lens I want and have wanted for quite some time. Sure it's use will be limited, but again this is the lens I didn't want to buy myself since it's close to $500.

The main use for this lens will be for shooting landscapes and cars only. I will buy the other lenses going out the range myself since many are cheaper for my other photography preferences. I am very interested in buying or building one of the car mounts I see where people use an ultra wide angle to shoot a front shot of their car while driving.

Thanks for the insight everyone :)

At this point we are beating a dead horse as the lens has already been ordered. Unless of course others stumble upon this thread and want additional info.

The 10-20 is a good lens and I'm sure you'd be happy with it. Should you need a mid range, the 17-50 VC is a good lens to check out.
