20" cube is set-up and cycling.
Will be SPS only.
MP10QD with a Radion overhead.
Bare bottom.
Very minimal rock work.
No lids or screening on tank.

Dont want clowns, cardinals, etc.

I'm stumped...any ideas?

That and the White Banded look alot alike.

Shouldnt I be concerned about jumping though? This is a rimless cube with no top.

In your experience, are they as secretive as they are made out to be. Will I ever see it?

They are initially reclusive but over time, they are out and about to a degree. However the fact that they are somewhat reclusive makes life a bit more interesting. Excellent long lived fish.

Why only one fish and not a pair?

I would always go with a pair. For a SPS system I would probably go with a pair of dottybacks - easy to pair and 100% reef safe.

Swissguard basslets are really cool.

Pair of helfrichi firefish.

They get a bad wrap, but I really like 6-line wrasses. A 20 might be a little small for him, but if he's the only fish, could be okay. Very active, pest eaters, cool green tail and neat coloration. And there'd be no one to terrorize!

Or you could give the much maligned blue damsel a beautiful SPS home. Again, no one to terrorize!

I've seen some very pretty splendid dottybacks too.

Valentini puffer?

I'm sure you're already aware but just in case, make sure your SPS are getting fed somehow for them to look their best. ULNS works but not without supplements.

Anyways, sorry to derail your thread. :)

Im not opposed to a pair of fish.

The tank is a 20x20x20 cube. Closer to 40 gallons i think.

20 inch cube is closer to 30 gallons (unless you have a sump)

I have a 18 inch sumpless cube and 9 fish in it now - 4 pairs and on single because his partner died in QT. That might be too much for long term when they are all grown up but for now, while they are all still small, I feel it is OK.
My SPS are largely growing, some actually fast.

If you want something that doesn't need feeding or just minimal food additions you should pick something like mandarins, pipefish, sixlines,...

Many fish can be paired up fairly easy:
Dottyback (the fridmani like): Start either with two small captive bred, but make sure one is a bit larger than the other, or build a pair from larger by selecting a large stretched looking and a smaller that looks in proportion shorter. If going with fridmani you can sex them by their tail fins: the female's tail fin has a vertical end and rounded edges, the male's tail fin has a sloped end and the bottom edge is elongated.

With sixlines I always had success by taking a small, short looking and a significantly larger that looks more slender.

In general, if not an established pair, give the smaller (most of the time the female) a head start of a day or two before adding the larger.

Many other fish can be paired in a similar way.

Dottyback of some kind. They are great other than not getting along with others. Perfect for a single fish.

I like Bicolors, but maybe too small for a 40gal. Splendid Dottyback would be good.

Fu Manchu lion.

The single most awesome fish around. Reef friendly, awesome behaviors. They get to know you, they also perch throughout the day and then whe the sun is going down the circle above the reef checking it all out for food.

I have found that one fish alone often acts paranoid, but if you have two fish (or more) the behave much more normally. My interpretation is that having no other fish around is warning sign that something is amiss and that the fish just can't get past that.
Exceptions: puffer fish and other very outgoing exploratory fish don't seem to mind.

I'd recommend getting a pair, or at least two fish.
