Can anyone give me information on the mentioning of clay pots or clay containers for the maroon to lay her eggs on?? i have read quite a few articles that have mentioned them, but nothing specifically. Right now my female maroon is totally redoing the substrate and rock on one side of tank... i would like to put anemone and or clay something or other for her to distract her from tearing up my tank???

Lots of people use clay pots for clowns to host. They are just the "regular" terra cotta planting pots you can find at any Home Depot or Wal-Mart.

Some people also use ceramic tiles, like what you would use to tile a shower. You can get really cheap tile at Home Depot and lean one near her favorite spot.

That being said, a lot of maroons just like to "wallow" in the sand. If you don't have a mated pair, I don't think she's going to lay eggs on anything. Adding a pot or tile probably won't prevent her from remodeling her room each night. :D

I do have a pair. they have been paired for almost six months. they are both on a mission it seems to totally re do my substrate. is there anything i need to do to clay tile before i put it in my tank?

I put a tile in my tank - I recommend soaking it in clean RO water first just b/c it's porous and it bubbled for what seemed like an eternity. It wasn't harmful, just irritating. :)

Someone else I knew used zip ties to fashion a harness for his tile and then he hung it in the tank. It sat flush against the back wall rather than down at the bottom. The clowns regularly lay their eggs on it. That might work for you if you don't want or don't have room for a tile on the substrate.

The size pot really depends on the size of your clowns. If you think they'll want to sleep inside, you'll need something big enough to house the pair. You'll easily choose the right size when you get to the store, or buy more than one and return what you don't use. They are pretty cheap.

Thanks for the info. This may seems like a dumb question, so the clown fish will think the clay pot is their home/egg laying area? They will sleep in the pot etc? Right now they do not sleep in the same spot

yes, thank you for the pics!! I see now what you are talking about. I just went to Home Depot and bought a clay tile that matched the substrate color and put it on the bottom where she has been digging alot. She is still staring at it acting like she is in shock that it's there. I hope I didn't mess her up by doing this. I guess I will go out and get a clay pot if this doesn't work?

That sounds good, but even better would be to prop the tile up against something (a small piece of live rock, artifical coral, a small clay pot.)

Clownfish usually lay their eggs on the clay portion of the tile...which is difficult to do when its buried in substrate. They also prefer the clay part to be away from light, so they will typically lay eggs on the bottom of a slanted tile.

ok, so here's the latest.?? i moved the tile. layed it against part of her area/cave. well last night when it layed on the substrate she seemed to be much more protective of her area. since i have tilted the tile she won't go near her cave area now? so......?

When trying to get clowns to lay eggs on a tile/pot in a display tank I will obsere them for a while, and before they lay they will clean a section of rockwork (or look for the area they laid last time). I will usually try to epoxy the piece of pot over that area. Without the epoxy the female will just remove the pot.

I am worried about her not being in her "home" now. It's almost like she is scared of the tile i placed in there. she really protected that area. Now she won't go near it because i placed the tile there. don't want to stress her out?
