Need seed

Hi everbody!

I thought I'd post a new thread rather than have this get lost on my build thread.

I'm going to try to get the tank up this week. I need some seed rock and seed sand to get 'er started cycling. I have a few bags of the aragalive type stuff and some base rock. Perhaps a few jugs of RO/DI might help jump start things too... My unit is producing as fast as it can.

Don't need much, just a bit to kick things off. Willing to pay fair price. Thanks again to this whole community.

Kev bring over some jugs and i'll fill'em.I have 35 gallons of fresh RO/DI.

Call me to set-up time 916-275-7700

I wouldn't put caulerpa in to your tank, Kevin. It's a pest macro algae. I think some people have success with it in a sump, but even then cheato should be just as good. I have some caulerpa in my display tank that came in on my rocks and I'm constantly battling it. Save yourself the headache and stay away from it.

Also, I'm not sure if you need seed rock... just a cup full of established live sand should seed your entire tank. Be sure to fact-check me on this, and I'm sure the experts will weigh in.

Oh, and remember to post pics! :D

Kevin,

I have ~10 cups of sand in my system from different sources around town. most shops will give you a sample. Heck I'll give you a sample if you let me display at the MARS meeting that photo of you kissing your skimmer. It would be a good commercial for the DIY events we do.

I'll take one for the team John. Thanks everybody. I should be able to make a Sac run sometime between Friday and Sunday if anybody'll be around. Can't make it to this month's MARS meet.

Caulerpa's a good thing, right? (At least in the aquarium context).
Most (9) species of Caulerpa are illegal to purchase or to have in the state of California. It is a pest which is causing problems by competing with native species. There is a real hazard when people thin it out of their tanks & just 'toss it out'.

I believe it is an infraction (fine, not jail time), but it's been awhile since I checked the penal code on this one. ;) Some people feel that in spite of the law, :( they can keep it in their tanks, because it can't get out into the waterways as long as they are sure it is really dead before they dispose of it. But that can be problematic - it is not as simple as running it through the garbage disposal!

Although I have no personal experience with it, I have seen posts in the macroalgae forum from people in other states who find it to be a real PITA the way it takes over their tanks.

I think it is fair to advise you to avoid it.
Chaetomorpha is good.

djscribz: Thanks for the offer, but on balance it sounds like I don't have the experience yet to safely manage caulerpa. Sherie: That is why I added the "aquarium context" bit, thanks for the additional info. Ed and John: Thanks! I'll be in contact when I hit the right point. Pat: I'm posting a few pics on my build thread.

jlfnjlf: GRANDE GRACIAS! Big cup o' mud w/snail -- All doing well and investing in seeding the reef. Purdy to watch the muck drift down.

I also bought a massive load of LR from MrMikeB/pbetito to kick start the riot. GET SOME!

If you can ever deal with these guys... They're doing it right and doing good while they go. I support the MrMikeB/pbetito prop lab!!! PAY IT FORWARD! Guys: Don't slack, and I know you won't...
