Need to get something off my mind

I make a conscious effort to keep an open mind on this forum as well as when I visit LFS. I also try my hardest to stay out of the Ra Ra threads that boast one LFS over another. I actually shake my head from side to side in disgust when I see the daily/weekly unwarranted promotion of a store. It's really getting to me, this forum is for the club and to better our reef keeping skills, this is not a place for a LFS commercial. Please, please can we stop this. Most of us are grown adults that can come to our own conclusions about which LFS we prefer with out the RA RA hype.

I feel better now.

Wow I just took everyone at their word and would bounce between stores depending on how the threads were going on that particular day.

How about the threads where people just find something to gripe about instead of ignoring the "useless" thread and starting a new thread actually related to an actual aquarium issue.

So how about if you have a problem with a thread use the "report to moderator" link and let them do his/her job. I'm real sure all us know when someone is laying it on thick or when a store really did get a good shipment in. So when you say that I'm Scotts best friend or some such just call him and ask him how much I 've spent in AO in the last 6 months, Not much he would be broke with what I've spent.

So to sum it up this thread was as usefull as the thread your upset about. BTW feel free to use the that link with this reply.

Wow Jokeloma I was just stating how I felt. I personally know from private conversations that other people don't appreciate the unwarranted promotion of a particular store over and over again. I personally have nothing against any store, they have all treated me right. I just don't think this is the right place for it. There is a reason the main Reef Central board has a special place for vendor experiences.

If you read my statement, I take no punches to anyone or any business individually, I just think those type of threads actually promote clicks amongst our club, which is not a good thing. It also my sway new people from exploring all the options around Tulsa and coming up with their own preference to which store bests suits their needs.

From the tone of your post, I get the feeling you took it personally. Again, just for the record, I was not trying to single out anyone.

My proposed situation to make everyone happy would be to create a master local vendor thread where anyone can promote, complain and tell of experiences of the vendors. That way for those of us that don't wan't to look at it, don't have to, and those that feel the need to share the joy of their purchases and experience can do so.

I wish there was a sub-forum for OMAS solely for vendor experience, this would be ideal.

I didn't take it personally I just have to deal with petty problems all day and didn't expect to sit down and relax to read new RC posts only to get petty pandering when ignoring (what I should have done) or reporting the offensive post which would have solved the problem.

I still stand by my opinion that if a thread is pushing a certain store or person than report it and move on and not create more threads only to sound the alarm.

God forbid that a group within a group get together and make mutual friendships and move forward. I think as a group of diverse people we all get along great. I say again that I believe we all are old enough to understand if a thread is bias to take it for what it's worth.

Maybe this is doing some good maybe people are seeing why we should simply not reply or create threads pointlessly. As far as a new sub forum for OMAS vendor exp. I think thats a great I idea maybe you should pour your energy in to that I would wholeheartely support you.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah - you stink!

Anyhow, why isn't there a vendor experiences thread? RC has one for manufacturers and distributors - it only makes sense to have one for locals. It would really help retailers find out what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. My experience has always been that people will not speak up if they have an issue in a store [to let ownership know of an issue] but rather hold a grudge. No retailer wants that!

Well, for what it is worth, I thought this forum was a good place for people, especially ones that are new to the hobby or don't have time go to all the stores can learn about what is out there or when someone has had a good experience with a local vendor. I found out recently when I placed a post saying I was pleased with a shop that there are those who will immediatly accuse you of having some other motive with your post. I was quite disgusted with the response. I certainly don't want this to be advertising space for the local shops, but why can't us shoppers tell about our experiences. I have spent hundreds (really thousands) at many of the local stores but am afraid to say if one has something cool because someone else (probably affiliated with a different store) will just mud-sling the post and corrode the post. I think the people who are getting screwed here are the people trying to use this forum to learn about the local shops and what they might have to offer. It would be nice if the shops were professional and the individuals were mature, but.....

Ok, I'm not starting up here again Alien but I went back and searched your posts. You had 12 touting Oddballs wares but others were not mentioned. (only in Omas) You aren't spreading it around. I think that the new thread is a great idea. Like Scott says it would be a great tool for the local shops also.

I PM'ed AGU (Mod) about creating a sub thread for vendor experiences, but he shot that down. He stated something to the effect that the RC staff has thought about it, but that is not the path their taking. I wonder what path they are planning to take.

OK, I guess I am guilty, I prefer Oddballs to other stores. There, I said it. Is it wrong of me to want to let other local people in the hobby know of my satisfaction? I have spoken with many people that feel the same way and none of us have any connection with the store other than being happy customers. Oddballs saved me hundredsss of dollars while setting up my 215gallon reef. From the tank and stand, sump, skimmer, Tunze streams, Tunze osmolator, lots of live rock, livestock, etc. My second favorite place is Reef Revolutions. They kick butt too and if they had been in business sooner they would have had some of that business. One thing I like about both of them is that they will refer me back and forth to each other. When my main pump I bought at Oddballs cracked, Scott called RR to see if they had one I could borrow until he got me a new one. They did and since then I have spent hundreds of dollars at RR too. I also like UR and PA, and have spents several hundred at those stores, but have a loyalty to the others because they have gone out of there way for me.
Wow, I feel a little weird now. I guess I just got frustrated. Hope nobody thinks I am too phsyco. It is just that I spent the first 5 years of this hobby learning everything the hard way (trial and error, error, error), and spending way too much money on everything, and now that I consider myself to be a little experienced I want to help those that aren't. The only purpose for my using this websight is to learn from others, and try to help them learn from me.
Anyway, sorry if this was inappropriate or I rambled too much. I will shutup now and if you think I am weird don't be afraid to tell me, I love CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

You are wierd! J/K. We are all a little weird. Think about it, we sit in front of our computers discussing fish tanks and related issues. That is very weird if you ask me, or even if you don't. We are double geeks. 1. Computer geeks 2. Aquarium geeks, ouch!

i know i am from Comas but we have the same issue on that thread too. However, i think it can be helpful for fellow club members and hobbyist to know the local resources that can be helpful for them. IMO this is part of what the club' s thread should be for, so club members can have an idea of what stores are providing better inventories and service. On Comas, we regularly announce deals and specials for LFS members or not. IMO:)

Just because this seems more like thread to speak someone's mind and not to actually mention anyone in general, I feel I should fall in with naterd1976 and speak my mind as well. I really need to get this off my chest anyways.

lawboy888, I couldn't agree more, but OMAS seems to work differently :( If one person says anything good about any store, other people point their finger calling out "affiliations" and others get their feathers all ruffled. If people would take other's opinions with RESPECT and keep their negative comments to themselves, then we wouldn't have as much trouble or as many closed threads on our board as we do. With COMAS, not only are opinions and experiences respected, they are often relished. Even other store owners chime in with respectful and positive comments on someone either finding a good deal or whatever the case may be. On OMAS here, someone will post a good experience and others will chime in with a "go some where else" or negative attitude. But I think a lot of people here get in trouble because they let their mouth fly. One person says a negative comment, and then ten more jump in either in defense or agreement. And then things escalade into a flame war. Which isn't what this forum or this club is about. And to be honest it makes me sick and ashamed that people in our club would try to hold OMAS up in a public place while talking so much garbage. If you have something negative keep it to yourself or speak it in private.

Ah, that feels better. For those that might think that I'm talking about anyone in general, I'm not. I'm not calling anyone out at all, so don't feel like I'm talking about the anyone in OMAS or this forum in general.

It just comes down to the posts themselves - if it seems baited a negative reaction occurs. You're right, the posts on COMAS are different. Many of the folks I have talked to and received PM's from feel the posts on OMAS are baited.

I understand that. A lot do seem like that, but whether or not they are baited doesn't mean someone needs to chime in with something negative. Unfortunately though, if it weren't for people posting experiences on the board (baited or not) then this forum would be pretty much dead. It's not very often that people actually post questions. I feel this is because we have good stores all over Tulsa. All people have to do is go to their nearest LFS and they get truthful answers and don't need to post on RC. So, we have a lot of interaction with our LFS. So, when something happens in a LFS, it winds up here on the board. Hence the overflow of many threads on LFS Experiences. For what it's worth I could sit here all day making threads about good experiences from EVERY LFS in Tulsa, OKC, and outlying areas. And none of them would be baited. I often choose not to post them though because people like to retaliate and derail threads. So instead of making OMAS look bad and make the RC Mods work harder, I usually just keep it to myself or tell people through word of mouth.

Now, my suggestion is how can we make the forum a better place to interact and share experiences (and not just LFS ones either)? I would suggest that we should actually push more online participation and encouragement. I think many people fear being persecuted for what they say or have experienced themselves. Afterall, this is where we need to share. I'm sure someone here has had a breakthrough with something difficult, but is too afraid to share. Also, I would actually suggest people use a little more manners and thought in posting negative comments. There are other ways to politely disagree rather then berating someone or pointing fingers.
