so i bought this at the lfs last week.yes i know, not knowing much about this nem may not of been best idea but o well i still bought it..any help on id or care would be awsome thanks..
A heliofungia will have a calcium based skeleton shaped like a frisbee underneath the tissue; an anemone will not. It should have been easy to notice when you moved the coral. If you press down on the coral to feel the skeleton, do so very gently so that you don't damage the tissue against the sharp edges of the skeleton.
Yes, that would mean it is a heliofungia.
They can be very difficult corals to care for. Most people (but not all) recommend that they be placed on the sandbed rather than in the rock work. The biggest danger is if the tissue is damaged somehow. If that happens, a lot of times the coral will just start to melt away. IME, they are more sensitive to nitrates than other LPS corals, so make sure you water quality is top notch.
Other than that, spend some time researching their needs and ask questions on the LPS Forum.
