Neon Green Toadstool With A Hole In The Center?

My neon green toadstool that i have raise from the size of a dime, now about 6 inches in diameter has a hole in the center that seems to be getting bigger slowly.Is this his mouth or is something wrong.We just noticed a few weeks ago and it seems to be getting bigger very slowly. All parameters are perfect also.Pic was right after a water change.But all polyps do open except where the hole is.

its not a mouth. I find at the store I work at, it usually occurs were detritus builds up in the center, but I'm sorry I dont have a real explanation for you.

The same thing just happened to mine today. It was fine last night and today there is a hole. Im not sure what it is either.

It wouldn't be a mouth. The polyps have "mouths," and since leathers aren't a single polyp coral (like, say, a mushroom) they don't have large mouths. My guess is that it is getting ready to shed an outer layer of mucus/detrius/algal growth.

Could be starting to split or bud of a new daughter colony.

It may also be a area of tissue breakdown from bacterial infection or injury, but from the look of the pic, it appears pretty clean, so I would tend to think splitting.

Make sure it is getting good water flow either way to prevent any problems and keep an eye on it.

mine did that and split. As long as it doesn't look like it's rotting, IME there's really no need to worry.

Well it has not split yet.And the hole has turned into a elongated oval now and is about 3/4 of a inch wide and 2 inches long right now.So it is definantley getting worse.But i still don't know what it is.

got that same hole there was a flat part where the detrius would build up, nothing to be concerned about in my opinion.

I don't think this is the problem.Hear is a pic this morning before all the tenticals opened up.You can see that the area is getting worse.

Try to put it in a higher flow area and maybe dose some iodine as this acts as an antiseptic.

It is in a pretty high flow area now as it is right by my return nozzle from the return pump.And how much iodine should i dose and will it hurt any other thing in the tank?

looks like your still getting some polyp extension there.

Your coral looks to be "self-propagating". In 2002 I had two green polyp leathers that started doing this and continued this "œself-propagating" for three years until I finally sold one of the colonies and then the other stopped. Between the two corals they went through this process five or six times and produced well over 150 frags in that three year period.

When one of these corals starts this process typically you'll notice a small hole forming in the center of the cap next to the stalk just like in your pic, although the hole can sometimes start further out on the cap. This hole will continue to grow larger until it reaches the outside edge of the cap. After the hole reaches the outside edge the cap will start to peel off around the stalk forming two strips on each side. If left alone, it will continue to peel around the stalk dropping frags from the cap. Before the frags drop from the cap they will start to form the stalks they will need to be able attach to the rock below or around the coral. To speed up this process and so you don't lose any frags you can take a very sharp pair of scissors or razorblade and remove the frag before it drops. This process will continue until the entire cap has peeled off, except for what is directly above the stalk. The entire process can take anywhere from four to eight months. One of the corals that I had propagated much more quickly than the other. Instead of propagating the way described above, it would start with multiple holes (3 or 4) and end up separating the entire cap (except for what is directly on top of the stalk) within a couple of months. After the process is complete the cap will grow back to its original size although the time period for this will depend on the tank conditions. I used to have pics of the process but I can't seem to locate them and the ones that I had posted on a very detailed thread here on RC are gone.

yeah it sounds and looks like its going to frag its self. brdracing on here has one atleast 14in in diamenter and his does it alot, not just the center but all over it. just keep the good prameters and you'll have more.

I think both my green and brown toadstools are splitting but I am not 100% sure. I have attached pics to try to add some visuals to this thread.

I thought my brown was infected so I cut out the area where it was splitting, but after more research, reading this thread and the fact that the coral seems to be continuing the split at the same area I think is is all good :bounce3: (when I cut it there was no odor what so ever).
