New Addition of my year - Orange Haddoni Carpet

Today I bought this orange haddoni carpet, I have never seen one in this color and just have to bite the bullet and purchased this.

Talking talking to some other long time reefers in my city, he told me he only saw it once at another tank also.

Anyways, here are the pictures with the lights off and only my digital camera flash; hopefully it will acclimate well and settle in as part of my collection.

Very nice :)

Have you considered planting him in a rubbermaid container filled with LS? (looks like you have a BB tank?)

I have one haddoni that sits in a BB tank, he wedged his foot between a piece of LR and ... a container filled with LS

Best of luck!

Did it come from a lfs or a local reefer? What other anemones do ya have? Very cool looking I bet it stands out oin the tank and looks awesome! Post some pics of the whole tank when the lights are on! :)

MarinaP, I would rather let it stay in that system and acclimate before I move them into a new rubbermaid container filled with LS. It is currently in my anemone collection system 33G x 2. I have almost 95% success with all anemones added to this system (haddoni carpet and various bta), so I rather not 'experiment' with a newly setup system. There are currently two other haddoni that acclimated well in this system; also has two gigantea but they were only added last week so I would not consider them pass the 'safe' period.

This come from a direct import from Indonesia that just arrived last night, it arrived in pretty good shape with mouth tightly closed. It is kinda big too, even closed it is almost 10", so I think once it expands, it might be 16"++.

Also in the same shipment was a reddish haddoni carpet, but its mouth was open side flipped open (i.e. mouth is closed but one side of its inside flipped out, however it is different from the grasping where mouth open with hole or open with inside starting to flip out). Due to cash constraint, I decided to pick the nicer and healthier of the two and took this one. Both are huge thou.

A few more pictures iwth the lights on, there's no actinic in this tank, only 6500K PC and 10K HOT5 so the color might not be as metallic or neon.

Also attached the youtube video for the flow and also shown in there are the blue & puprle gigantea carpet. The purple one was not in the best shape upon arrival, so it's been the pretty much the same.

Think she meant a tupperware instead of rubber maid.

Kind of like this -- wouldn't have to be on the stand, but the container itself on the bottom of your tank.

Now that I've seen it with the lights on I think it may be a touch bleached. I'd expect to see it become a deeper red coloration if kept in good condition.

Thanks Todd for the display, I am wondering if I should move it now that it settled down a bit. Also I only have brand new bags of sand and do not have alot of the "in aquarium" stuff, so the sand might not be as 'adequate' to use with an anemone as suppose to some established LS. My other haddoni in the same system seems to be doing okay with barebottom or hide foot in LR, so I will try not to disturb it too much for now.

Thanks Slakker, I will give it some time to settle and hopefully acclimate well and see if it change to a deeper red color later on, at this time I am more worry about it acclimating than the coloration. I did receive a pm from an asian hobbist telling me he has exactly the same color carpet (described as red) but did not make it through acclimation period.

I tried to feed some frozen mysis/slided clam last night but it has not recognise it as food yet it seems. It is sticky and held onto the food but do not have other captive carpet's direct feeding response (i.e. curl up, put the food right into the mouth in fast action).

It is looking a bit bleached, and i too think that this is a red haddoni that just has lost some color. But if you can keep it healthy it should be VERY NICE. Heck, if it stays that color, even better.

That's quite a collection :) Hope they do well for you, I don't know how you're sleeping at night, I always stress out when I have a new anemone (and you have 3!). Best of luck with them all. I'm very jealous ;) No seriously, maybe a little, but it's cool to see such nice specimens. I hope they adjust for you.

I'm not entirely convinced it's bleached as others have stated. The color is too consistent throughout, and the base looks the proper color. These carpets are found in a wide range of colorations in the wild, so why not pinky/orangey/peach? There are two other clues that it is probably not bleached. It's 10-16 inches and clearly healthy, and it came directly in from an Indonesian importer- most likely this was very recently taken from its native waters.

Beautiful find, and I hope it does well for you!

Orange is a natural color for Haddoni, not sure what this one will eventually retain/develop.
