New Anemone Tank

that's good news.

Quick question: how do you like the foam cover on the Vortech? If you've answered this already I apologize.

Thanks

It does a good job. I will get clogged with junk, and will reduce the flow even more. It's not a big deal, I just rinse it every week for about 20 seconds. I don't usually use them (in my other tanks). This was the only time I added it, because I needed reduced flow (even on the lowest setting) and protection against chopped nems.

To be honest, I kind of liked it with just anemones and clownfish: it was simple, but dramatic. But that's just me. It's still beautiful either way. :)

No, I like the shrimp--I meant without corals or clams, just the nems (as far as cnidarians are concerned). As time goes on I'm more and more into biotope and/or species setups for anemones and clownfish, as opposed to "garden" style tanks that combine anemones with corals, clams, etc. But I think either can look great and you should do what makes you happy. It's definitely not intended as a criticism. :)

fair enough.

The tank was looking nice today, I'm almost confident that the two nems will make it. it's still going to take a while

I'm a little frustrated at the growth of algae in this tank.

It's plumbed into the same system as 3 other tanks with now algae. The only thing I can think of is lack of flow.

I might re-think taking out the sand. I might also add an algae munching fish :)

This is why I won't put a nem in my sps tank. So, I've had my anemone tank for a little bit now.

I have:
5 Rose BTA
3 Pink BTA
2 Green with pink tips BTA
1 amazing yellow, orange and green BTA

They have all been happy where they were.

Well, 3 days ago, one of my nems went for a walk. It was on the left pillar at the bottom, and went all the way up top. The next day, it's back at the bottom. Yesterday morning, back at the top, then last night, it walked all the way down one pillar and up another one. Now, had this been my SPS tank I would have been so mad, as it would have just killed a ton of stuff.

I love anemones...... as long as I can control them :)

I get your wanting to avoid frustrasion, but IME it takes a fair bit of time for them to kill corals. I had several BTAs in my old reef and they really didn't bother the corals much until they decided on a permanent spot. Even then it took weeks for them to kill off the surrounding corals. A little stinging would occur, but it was nothing that wouldn't recover over the course of a couple days.

I am with you on this matter over all. The system I'm currently constructing will have species tanks for anemones and clowns with a larger display tank for corals. There will be corals in the anemone tanks but it will be corals that are expendable.

Very cool tank! I just read through your SPS dominated thread and had to come peek over here. I do have 2 (possible) requests:
1. Could you take a pic of the inside of your overflow? It seems so small, Im wondering do you have an elbow facing down, or....? Im moving in a few months and like having a couple tanks plumbed together, and was interested.
2.Any pics of the full room/area that you have these tanks connected? Again being that I like having tanks seperate, but plumbed together. Currently I have a mixed reef, as well as a mantis tank. In the future I want a smaller reef (40 br maybe), the mantis tnak, and possibly a nem tank like this.
Both of your threads are great, with amazing pictures!!

thanks a lot for the compliments. Here is a picture of the plumbing http://www.reeftools.com/live/imcosmokramer/albums/5/25

there is no elbow inside the overflow. If you're having tanks built, don't do what I did, have external overflows built so that they don't take up room in the tank.

PM me if you have any questions.

Here is the new nem. It's just peaking so I can't take a good picture. It's bright yellow, orange and green

Very cool anemone! Glad to see a fellow reefer with a BTA that doesn't have perfect tentacles! I have a 10" RBTA that has tentacles like that, but it is way uglier and the tentacles look way more messed up! :crazy1:
