There are some differences but not great. I would be happy with either. It does seem the Australia have a littel more red and darker caudal/dorsal area.
Heath of the fish need to be taken into accout also. This differences in the pictures above may or may not be true variances due to individual variation, size, and health of the fish..

The false eye spots both front and back, on the dorsal fin is clear indication of the juvenile status of the Indo-Pacific specimen. He is in early transition from juvenile to adult coloration in that picture. It is really unfair of LA to show that picture to justify increase price of Australia Tusk price.<O:p</O:p
 
I would love for some of us who keep these fish to post pictures and size data of these fish once they adapted to tank condition. That will give us the true coloration diffences of the two sub group of this species.

May I ask how long have you had him and how big he is right now? when that picture taken?

It's true that the difference in color as it relates to attractiveness are subjective, but I haven't met one person or read one review that didn't recommend getting the Aussie versus the indo. But it's entirely up to you and the indo specimen. What I do know, based on the 3" indo that I had before, is that it will take a very long time for it to get to its true adult coloration, which typically would show around 6". In any case, good luck with the purchase and show us your pretty HT.

It was in my 125 gallon. I had him for a good 2 to 2.5 years. He was about 4" when I sold him. I may still have the pic. If I find it I will show you.

Snapped a pic of mine yesterday when he was doing his hot laps lol. His stripes will get real greyish-blue as in the picture and he'll circle around to the power head and ride the current across the tank a bunch of times. He usually does this in the evening. Normally the stripes are much lighter.

The picture you posted was when your fish in late transition. The Dorsal eye spot is barely visible and not completly gone yet. I wonder if he will color up moer, which I am sure he will.

He may or may not. He was just too slow a grower to tell. As you can see, he ate well but didn't grow much in length.

Divers Den has had several juv Aussy tusks this summer available. My 1.5" tusk is a indo which I'm ok with... I spent 50$ compared to 250$

Posted it earlier in the thread, he's an aussie currently at about 5-1/2". Was 3-1/8" when I got him between xmas and new years last year. Keep in mind he's not always colored up like that, my avatar pic was taken the next day.

UPdate...His confidence is SLOWLY coming around. ( Kinda like this hobby SLOWLY ) haha
Able to take a quick pic of him swimming with the lights on. First time I seen him swimming during the day...
 
I actually went and got a HT today from a LFS,4" or so,paid 80 bones. Hes dripping now,they had him for a month at least so hes going straight into the DT. Theyre salinity was .015 though so gotta get him up to .025 first.

Best pic I can get right now with him in the blue bucket. =x
