New blue gig

D-Nak,

First of all, please understand that I don't mean to blame anybody.
I just want to tell my experience hopping it might help someone in the future.
The Gig looks fine when it arrived. The shipping method was very good.
It looked as good as other Gigs I've bought at LFS before (I never bought a Gig without a good color and a closed mouth).
The reason I bought it from iBlueWater because they are acclimated the Gig for a month; so I can put it in the same system as the Purple gig.
I was wrong. They both died!
That was my fault. For me, from now on, I will separate the Gigs at least 6 months before I put them in the same system.

Agreed. Just trying to rule out any obvious reasons for the cause of death. I think we can all agree that gigs are terrible shippers -- just trying to gauge how quickly they go downhill once in a bag and shipped out. Of course, I'm also keeping a mental tally on gigs from iBlueWater -- a high success rate would give me reason to purchase from them, a low success rate will put them into the category of any other store that has gigs. This doesn't shed a bad light on iBlueWater, just that they don't have any sort of advantage (the magic quarantine process that cures gigs of their illness).

I know that some people have successfully kept multiple gigs in the same system. Others haven't had much luck. My understanding is that gigs can either be male or female (someone please correct me if I am wrong). I wonder if males and females can be kept together, but those of the same sex cannot. Just a guess here. I also wonder if males are more aggressive to each other than females, or vice versa.

When I picked up my gig, it appeared to stress spawn in the transport cooler -- I believe it's a boy since it spewed a cloudy, milky substance. I've always pondered the idea of adding a second gig, after a long quarantine, but wasn't sure if there were other factors I should consider -- such as the possibility that two gigs could simply have a chemical battle and kill each other.

Sorry if I've steered this thread off course. Please let me know if you think we should start another thread.

Looks great. I need to get myself invited over to see your tank sometime :)

flakey, that's the normal color for a healthy blue gigantea.

flakey,

That is its almost natural color.
If you notice, the tips of the tenacles are bluer than the bodies.
The bodies of the tenacles are kind of blue-blown colors.

Mine is a little bigger (12-15") I wish I could have found one that size :) Looking forward to seeing your tank. Will have to touch base with you sometime and figure out a time.

My Blue Gig after 3 months.
Hope for the best.
