Beautiful picture, but the area circled in the photo concerns me...

What is it?

Incredible, as always!

That is either one cooperative fish, or you pressed the shutter button an awful lot to get that one!

thanks for the feedback, folks.
Nick- I don't know what that off-color spot is. I can't find any other closeup pix of this particular fish's facial area to compare it with. I'll be monitoring it. Thanks.

I dont think the cheek spines are connected with cartiledge. I;m pretty sure they are actually part of the gill plate bone. A LFS here in St Louis, (Clayton Pet Emporium) has a gorgeous male Imperator, (Clyde) in their display reef, and there are no corresponding off colored areas on him.

I also used to work in a WHolesale/Retail LFS in Hawaii, (Coral Fish Hawaii), which had at the time, about 1.5 million gallons of saltwater in the store. I worked there for 2 years, and saw alot of fish, including several adult imperator angels, and I dont recall ever seeing an off colored spot like that before.

It may very well be nothing, but Lee is the guy with the most knowledge in this area, that I know of, so it made sense, (to me) to ask him about it.

Nick

well, we shall see what he says eh? There's another spot to the left that looks a little strange too. Maybe it's just an old fish?

Well, we finally found out where the kids have been hiding their gum.
Nerf darts, too

I have yet to see another Emperor with this gill cheek spot we're talking about. There's an identical spot on the other side of the fish. My fish is a very young adult. I've seen pix of 'Clyde'- he's a biggun' :D

Does it protrude at all or is it just a discolored area?

Clyde's about 12+ inches starting to get the dorsal filiment, has the forehead bump, and grunts when he doesnt get the attention he feels he deserves from onlookers.

Nick

no protrusion. Not to detract from the original intent of this thread I started a new one for this particular topic here

My fishes do get scratched up from time to time. The Emperor and Powder Blue like to go at it every now and then but I don't believe the imp's strange discolored area is from a tussle (although located at what would seem to be an area of high stress if a spike were used in combat).

We get heavy grunting over here, too :D

Thanks for the link to the new thread, I'm susbscribed.

Sorry for the hijack....

You've had your Imperator since it was a Juvi? I'd always heard that the colors didnt develop as well on captive fish that transition from juvi to adult.....obviously that's far from the case. Your's is stunning.

What are you feeding it?

The first time I heard the grunting I was shocked it was audible from such a distance.

Nick

to clarify, I've had this fish since it was just leaving it's juvi coloration (circular markings).
Searching through many pictures I've only seen one other Emperor with what might be considered similar markings on it's opercular spine and (most importantly to me) it was a wild specimen.
My Emperor eats a lot. I feed it VibraGro, HBH soft sinking spirulina (both are pellet foods), nori, frozen krill, HUFA mysids, frozen broccoli florets, frozen Angelfish formula (containing sponges), and occasionally a big chunk of frozen Cyclopeeze.
In my aquarium I've seen it take sponges, Bryopsis, Aiptasia, Chaetomorpha and Tridacna clams :)

As anyone that owns one probably already knows, Emperor Angelfish have a very difficult time picking small foods out of the water.
These guys prefer bigger prey items.

like yummy fingers?
them too :p

since this thread is a record of my current reef aquarium I figured that I'd mention that I'm just coming out of a period of minor setbacks- mostly due to a spike in alkalinity that has negatively affected some of my SPS. I also had two unhealthy Sarcophyton melt down in my SPS reef aquarium- maybe it's significant, maybe not.
I changed my saltmix two buckets ago. A big no no. That's 300 gallons of water changes. Expensive mistake. If it's not broke don't fix it, right? Lesson learned. (Or should I say re-learned?)
Still, life isn't too shabby.

yeah that alkalinity is a bugger eh? I would venture to guess it is responsible for a lot of my reef headaches.
