new "canvas"

Gary-

Phenomenal growth and beauty in a mere two years; Nice work! ;)

First off: I know you have tons of experience and "mad aquarist skillz"! Do you partially attribute the quick rate at which you were able to stock and have success and growth to the fact that your rock was from your previous system? (I'm assuming it is; correct me if I'm wrong.)

In other words, do you think your aquarium would look the same as it does now if you had started w/ new live rock two years ago?

Just curious, as I constantly have a million thoughts running through my head about the upcoming school aquarium project at any given time. Your recent pics got my wheels turning!

Thanks!

thanks

thanks

I'm happy to hear that my posts "get wheels turning".
Good question regarding liverock- I see your reason for the question.
I'm 100% certain that had I started out with fresh-from-the-ocean good quality cured liverock that my system would have gotten off to a quicker start in the beginning. I chose to keep my old rock for many reasons, some obvious and some not so obvious. The one truth that totally convinced me to keep my old rock is the fact that it could be cleaned up :)

Looks great Gary!

Might be the angle, but you look to be pretty close to the "coral encroaching on glass" phenomenom---any squared off corals from the cleaning magnet?

John

thanks!

thanks!

Compliments from you mean a lot to me, John. The Seriatopora was getting flattened by the magnet. It was fragged and moved. I glued a frag of that Birdnest back in the very same spot and it will eventually happen all over again.
I started a second "green monster" (which can be seen at the middle right of those pics.) Hopefully it will grow mostly towards the center of the aquarium or I'll have to do the same thing to it.
Some people just don't learn from their mistakes :p

Green monster #2 looks like it's well on the way to tabling, must be in a high flow area---2 months to contact!

very recently (and only by looking at my macro pix) have I discovered that my male percula has white teeth while the female has orange ones.
I've also spotted some bifurcate tentacles on my gigantea anemone.

you know I noticed the tentacles when you first posted it but forgot to ask you about it. Have you done any research on that?

no. The only other anemone I've seen with bifurcate tentacles is Heteractis magnifica and that's the extent of my research on this so far!

Whats the electrical draw of the Mag7
a lot! I'll have to look it up.

I also should have mentioned that I added a Tunze 6100 (6101?) Stream about the same time I added the Mag 7 powerhead, but it really wasn't worth mentioning (IMO) because it's like comparing apples with oranges.
I needed raw muscle to slam into the opposite end of the aquarium and the Mag 7 acheives this nicely. The Mag 7 powerhead was specifically incorporated for the health of my gigantea anemone.

I've got a smaller H.crispa with several bi-furcate tentacles and at least one tri-furcate tentacle...

that's not a pump, that's a heater!

My PLTA has been hanging out in about the lowest flow area of my tank for going on 3 months...Seems very happy, great color, and getting very large, but I am mystified by its choice of location.

Just finish reading this thread. Great tank Gary, even better than your TOTM. I am getting the same size tank. Your tank give me some idea about overflow and others. I really like the overflow like your because it take less room.
Did you consider the Majestic angel or Copper Band Butterfly for the Aptasia. I notice you had a Majestic before but not now. I had good luck with the Majestic in term of health, coloration and reef compatibility.
Does your angel take care of the aptasia for you?

I've noticed that many anemone species (both in pix and at the LFS) can develop these tentacles. I still don't understand why.

the Mag 7 does double as a heater. In my particular aquarium this is a good thing- gigantea like it 80+ degrees F.
IME LTA's prefer much less water motion than gigantea.

thanks, Minh.
I've had Copperbands and a Majestic. It was time to try something else. Besides, I've always wanted to have an Emperor Angelfish and I'm not getting any younger (if you know what I mean). If I feed the Emperor really well it won't nip at baby Aiptasia. If I let it go hungry (a gamble) it picks at the Aiptasia much more readily.
Almost every one of the corals in my present aquarium were grown out from captive raised frags. Aiptasia are an annoyance, but they won't prevent stony corals from growing if environmental conditions are right.
