new "canvas"

Looking good Gary. I noticed a lot of your photos are lit brighter on one side. Do you shoot them during sunlight hours?

I had Blueline eballasts for around 10 years.
I'm running three PFO pulse start 400w ballasts right now.

Two of my SE halides are Ushio 14k's and the other is a Hamilton 14k that's been in continuous use over my aquarium for over four years now!

I also run URI/UVL 03 VHO actinics.

I hate how you just follow the trends Gary...

Monti_invasionb.jpg

you can see how 'Waldo' the Acropora is struggling to compete in this pic.
The large Monti that's starting to shade it needs to be removed ASAP.

My corals have different growth rates. The purple Monti is the fastest growing coral in my aquarium. Back on pages 20 and 21 of this thread (June 2008) you can see how/why I believed that all of this purple Monti was wiped out. Every bit of it I have now (plus lots of it I've already fragged out) regenerated from the few polyps that survived. The piece in the last picture was never expected to get so large and heavy (it's thick!) so quickly and it's taken me by surprise how fast this coral can grow if conditions are right.

the massive main gyre is generated by my penductor capped water returns and travels the same direction at all times. I also have powerheads aimed opposite the penductors which turn on/off intermittently- but they are no match for the penductor's flow. Instead of creating a flow in the opposite direction they merely end up creating a bunch of turbulence.

So, is this possible without a pump that isn't pressure rated? I have Eheim 1262 as a CL and another 1262 a main return. These aren't pressure rated and from what I've read there is no use using an eductor.

To get one very strong outlet, I could run the CL to only one return since this will be the strongest flow (2 foot head) and direct my main return through my OM squirt. I was going to do it the other way, but if it is best to have one strong, two weak than 3 medium I will do it this way. Pls advise.

Thanks!
Angela

It's difficult for me to say what will give you the most desirable end results (ie: bottom sweeping gyre.)
Penductors should be used with pressure rated pumps but I'll bet they'll work with others. You shouldn't use penductors on OM returns as it can destroy the drum.
Reversing the main gyre is nice but not a necessity. It's more important that detritus gets lifted off the bottom and flushed down the drains.

hmm... I'm thinking to go this route, main pump on OM reverse of CL from one outlet. I'll just play with angles in the tank- I could try a penductor and without on the CL and see what happens and report back. Thanks for the ideas.

Angela

Getting the gunk out of the water column, is one drawback to surface skimming; I like your method! Getting your sweeping turning over current is something perhaps easier done with a peninsula orientation or a one viewing panel tank, but you have no doubt changed the circulation plans for my tank.

June 1st, 2010

June 1st, 2010

time to wrap up this thread with some pix and a video of the "New Canvas".

From this day going forward I'll be referring to my aquarium as "Junior's Reef" (Junior is the name of my Emperor Angelfish).

I'll start a new thread called "Junior's Reef" and provide a link to that thread at the conclusion of this one.

Always a pleasure to see pics Gary. It is sad that this had to be redone due to the leak but while looking at these I find myself being thankful that nothing catastrophic happened to make you lose all of this beauty. Looking forward to Junior's thread.
