Gary, what is the benefit of introducing micro bubbles into the tank ?? I've heard that micro bubbles can cause coral to close up and ( trying to find the right word ) lets say not prosper in a closed system ? very nice build thread by the way. very informative, and beautiful camera work.

microbubbles in the display aquarium provides O2, raises pH, has skimming potential and looks really really kewl. I've done it for years (using a MJ+venturi plugged into a wavemaker) and I've never seen anything seriously negatively affected by it.

I have never done microbubbles in the display on purpose, in the sump yes...display, don't like the look. I get a vortex of water bringing air down to the vortechs occasionally and hate when it happens.

If it were happening at night on a timer, no big deal I guess and I can see where it would be a benefit. It would also be a good tool to watch your flow.

Gary, is yours on a timer or something you just hook up occasionally?

powerheads (thus air injection) are controlled on/off via ACjr.
I believe the rate of injection right now is one minute on and 9 minutes off. Salt creep is the only downside I see from doing this.

Salt creep and water spots on light bulbs is the problem if you have your light too close to the surface.
Skimmer would add all the benefit regarding air exchange.
Natural reef likely have lots of bubbles also at least near the surface of the ocean

Gary, how do you clean (magnet with blade should be removed), feed (in addition to funnel feeding from the sump), add/remove corals with mesh under tank braces?

What alkalinity the salts, that you are using, have?

the garden net mesh top actually sits on top of the braces. Removing it is simple and takes me about 2 seconds. I usually use IO saltmix and run aquarium alkalinity around 9-10 dKH.

Hows the Achilles fairing? Any further issues with the off colored spot on the opercular spike of the Emperor?

knock on wood... everybody here is doing well. Emperor still has an off-colored spot at the base of it's spike but I can live with that!

that red monti cap (i think that's what it is), in the front... is that the same monti cap from the december shot (i.e recovered), or a replacement?

and that imperator/emperor angel... HUGE! looks great!

Junior is still growing. The Montipora is the same coral in both shots. Little patches of living flesh on one big colony grew into a new batch of caps. Remember how bad this coral looked in June of '08?

Wow! What a turnaround since June!

The growth rate on your acros and montis is incredible! Do you feed any small foods that SPS coral would ingest? (Oyster eggs? Coral Frenzy?)
