New Carpet Nem, Pics

so i got a new carpet today. hoping someone can tell me the scientific name and maybe some preferences. I was anticipating the moment that i had a nice anemone with a nice pair of clowns...i've had the clowns for about a year but no nem ti'll today. i was shocked when my clowns jumped into the nem after about 2 seconds if it being in the tank. in one of the pics you can see the mouth which isnt looking as good as i'd like, but it is better than before. also, it stuck to my hand REALLY hard when i put it in the tank, so thats a good sign. almost had to peel it off. anyway, here are some pics. sorry about quality, pics were taken with my phone.

Looks just like my S.Gigantea's but a different colour.
Is there purple spots of the underside of it's oral disk? If so thats what you have.
And if so then they like LOT"S of random flow. I have one that stays on a rock and the other one on the sand but at the base of a rock.

They are hit and miss in the next few weeks.Just keep really good care of the water and get it lots of flow and feed him in a week or so.. and cross your fingers:)
 
well i dont think there are any purple spots. i have some random flow hitting it indirectly but i have heard if it is lifting the oral disc that its bad for the nem. i wish i could find like a video or something of perfect flow for these guys. i had more flow on it but it took a little move about two inches to the right of were i put it where there is a little less flow and hasnt moved any more. it looks like its doing really good im just concerned about this flow issue. i was thinking about adding another mj1200 but im not sure. thank for the help hans.
 
You need to look under its disk and that will let you know what kind of flow it needs. If its happy right now i would just leave it.

It could be a haddoni.

Let me know what the underside looks like:)
 
well underneath its mostly blue but it does have sort of like purple blotches? not really any definitive shape just kinda blended with the blue. maybe its dyed? what color should the foot be?

No its not dyed. But it will probably darken up over time. If you have it in decent flow than it should start to settle. And the occasional lifting of the folds is fine and alot of them like that. But if it moved out of the flow abit and it has stayed where it is as long as it's tentacles are moving than i would leave it.

Do a search here onR.C for S.Gigantea and you will find a toone of recent threads in regards to these guys as there has been a sudden influx of them.
 
whoa. nice! thanks alot for the help. i found a video of someones Gigantea and the flow seemed to be close to what mine was getting where i first put him. I guess with the stress he wanted a little less flow but the folds are still being lifted slightly every 30 seconds or so. I cant stop staring though. I added a really nice bright green metallic brain and an orange linkia along with the nem today but i havnt even looked at them lol. well thanks again for your help, i'll update with pics probably a few times a week.

so today my nem is about 3/4 of the size that it was yesterday so im guessing its acclimating itself, swapping water right?

also, the mouth is now tightly closed, looking very healthy, but it is somewhat puffed out. not really flat, know what i mean? here's a pic. tell me what you guys think.

thats my bicolor blenny in my fox coral. is this normal behavior? he does this with my brains as well.

bump. today the mouth was fully open when i woke up but it closed up shortly after. i just got home and it was open again. the lights also just turned on before i got home. anyway, after about 10 minutes the mouth is closed again but i dont like that it keeps opening and closing. also, it is about 1/2 of the original size today. im hoping its just flushing out old water. color still seems good and he still seems sticky. food gets cought on his tentacles pretty easy when i feed the fish but the clowns snatch it quickly. I'm not really interested in feeding him ti'll at least a week of him being in the tank anyway.
 
The mouth looks fine in all the pictures .... even puckered out. I am more worried about the bleaching. The only help that I can give is the same old advice for gigantea: surging flow, strong light, and luck seem to be important factors.

IMO all you can do is give it strong light, good surging flow, some food, and TIME.
 
It look decent in the pictures but the rapid purging cycles you are describing along with the gaping mouth aren't good...Sorry.

There is nothing you can do really, this wave of Gigant's and Gigant's in general don't do well in captivity for w/e reason.
 
well i really think its just flushing out old water and it has been deflated since it began that process. i know it can take a few days to finish this process entirely. it has been looking pretty good today, mouth very nice and tight, all the tentacles moving nicely. i guess it just needs to inflate again and then i'll try feeding. thanks for all the help
 
J you may want to search this forum for additional info on your new carpet.

An anemone uses the purging mechanism to acclimate to new conditions and expel wastes.

Longevity of these animals has been in doubt for years.

I wish you the best of luck though, you may be the exception.
 
I would try and feed him. Just a very small chunk of shrimp,scallop something along those lines. I would stay away from silversides as they have been linked to nems dieing.

I bought a bag of Tiger Prawns that are natural with nothing added or anything and i just cut mine a chunk about the size of there mouth and give them that every 3 days or so. When i first got the yellow one he was somewhat bleached and i just had him under a 400 watt halide and feed every other day and he has darkened up alot.

If it doesn't do the "typical" Cookie monster thing with itself to swallow the food you can very lightly just put it on its mouth and it should start to eat it. My yellow one i did that with for about 2 weeks and now it does it all on its own.

Just keep your water stable and keep the flow stable and hopefully(fingers crossed for you) He will settle in and all will be okay.

Keep an eye on your clowns as we'll. I had to remove my true perc when i first got the yellow one as she was picking at its mouth all the time. I reintroduced her about a week ago and she was still doing it so she is now in the sump and i moved my australian pair in and they are good as gold with them both.
If it looks like they are annoying it then move them for a week or so and see if they can behave after that.
 
ok all good stuff. i think i'll try and feed it a little then today its a little smaller than yesterday but the mouth is still closed thats good news. the clowns dont really pick at the mouth, they just clean it ALL the time. Although the female is VERY rough on it. i was curious about whether or not it is stressing the nem since it is so new to the tank. she really rubs on the nem. also, thanks for telling me about the piece of food being about the size of the mouth. i didnt know that. water is doing good, nitrates still 0 since last water change, but that was only two days ago so i wouldnt expect it to be detectable yet. im getting some chaeto to add in hopefully tonight or tomorrow and that should be good for keeping nitrates and phosphates at 0 consistently. I'm going to do another water change in a few days about 5 gallons to keep the water consistent. I have read that large water changes can stress the nem.
