New Gig - a couple of questions...

I have been watching a blue gig at a local store for a couple of days. The oral disk was tightly closed and the animal appeared healthy. So, on impulse I purchased the nem, rearranged my 120-gallon tank and drip acclimated it before placing it in a deep bed of large and small substrate next to a rock wall under a 250W MH Radium 20K lamp along with a super actinic LED strip light from BML "“ moderate to high variable water flow.

Today is day 3 and the gig has expanded nicely and continues to have a closed mouth. It has stayed put for now where I originally placed it. I do have the necessary equipment for a QT should I need to do so. May I ask a couple of questions?

Is Fish Flox the Cipro product that I should purchase for the QT?
The nem seems very happy under the 250W MH lamp "“ the tank is around 26" deep. I do have and can easily swap out the current lamp with a 400W version "“ is that something that you recommend I do in the future?
The lighting schedule now:

5AM Actinic LED strip on
7AM MH lamp turns on
5PM MH lamp turns off
7PM Actinic LED turns off

That is 10 hours under the 250W lamp. Does that sound good?

I am hopeful that the gig will continue to flourish without going through the antibiotic treatment.

There is another gig at the same store that definitely would require treatment.

I put a vid up on YouTube but it is a bit out of focus. The vid is at https://youtu.be/bC349vHVZTQ

Here is still shot from this morning:

It's so beautiful! Is he touching another anemone? Will that be a concern?

I wouldn't move it at this point, but gigs like to be up in the rocks where they can get the best light and flow. Nice, healthy looking gig though.

Thanks pfan151 - I thought gigs liked their foot in the sand next to a rock. It has moved a bit up the rock. I do have pretty flow that varies throughout the day. Currently have a 250W MH above it and I have the capability to increase to a 400W lamp. Should I make the lighting increase now or hold off? Still looking healthy today.

Gigantea will do better with more light. MH 400 W can produce a lot of heat. As long as you can keep the temp stable and OK, I would change the light. Your Gigantea will look a lot better with more light.

I got a lot of light on mine. Over a 6X3 foot tank I have 8 Radions Pro or G3 Pro. Also 11 90-120 W equivalent spot light. Daylight spectrum. Most of the Gig have one or two spot lights point on it.

I had a gigantea in a 120 gallon tank and it did well (prospered and eventually outgrew the tank) with the similar combination of lighting that you currently have -- 250 watt Iwasakis and 2 actinic blue VHOs. I later switched to Radions (Gen 1 then later upgraded to Gen 3) with equal success with two gigs (but a lot less heat and I was able to remove the chiller). My gigs were on rocks approximately 6" from the bottom of the tank, putting them approximately 24" from the light source.

I agree with Minh that you can add more light which could positively impact the color of the nem, but I don't think it's a requirement for the gig to thrive.

My gigs are very happy and thriving under ATI 10 bulbs (6ft long). Unlike others, mine have their foot hidden under rocks and sand. I feed them once every 3 days, and so far they are doing great. Both gigs coming from a healthy tank where they used to receive par around 900-1300 range. I doubt that my fixture produce that many, but feeding is important.

Day 5 in the tank

Day 5 in the tank

Day 5 and the gig is happy. Gave it a snack - small piece of raw shrimp a few minutes before the picture. Swapped out the 250 for a 400 Radium 20K. The nem moved a bit up the rock structure. Knock on wood that this one will do fine without going through QT process. Next one will. I was confused I guess - I thought gigs liked their foot buried in the sand next to a rock. Which nem likes its foot in sand? I am thinking about getting a few skunk clowns for this one. Thanks for your help!

Thanks pfan151. Those are actually mushrooms up at the top. I noticed today that it appears the nem may be moving away from the light. Gonna go back to 250W for a bit and then consider other options for lighting although I am still a big MH fan.
