New Green Gig!

xtlosx

Just Reefin'
So I picked up this beauty today.. He's 3.5-4" with a tight mouth, stubby tentacles, but some were actually "shaggy", and overall much much better looking than my purple gig ever was... This guy picked up mysis out of the water column and closed like a bear trap, as well as he is sticky as all get up.

Right now he's in QT as I don't want any issues with my current purple gig that is coloring up... I'll be watching him over the next couple of days, and we will see what course he needs to take.

The QT is 10G with a koralia powerhead, and a 135W LED fixture which he is sitting directly underneath baking in the light and tentacles are vibrating!!! Anyways, now the good stuff, pictures!

I've always always wanted a nice green\yellow Gig, and finally hoping this is the one and as always cipro is waiting just in case....

 nice...was this one of the Glen Ellyn nems by any chance?

Just might be.... There is a purple left, but this guy looked great and I couldn't pass it up not to mention I have wanted a green\yellow since the beginning of mg Gig mission.

really beautiful pick up...heard the purple was sold too :)

please keep us posted....if I may ask, why the wait on Cipro?

After talking to Minh I really don't know what sense it makes to put a newly obtained specimen through Cipro for no apparent reason... I know some people think this is wrong and gave me guff for it on our purple as well but have never used cipro on that one and it's doing marvelously.

I'm no expert and Minh has been pioneering this treatment.. If I see anything going weird here the Cipro is ready, but until then, I am not going to be treating. What're your thoughts on that?

My anemone would nto get treat unless they deflates, and as soon as they deflates but not sooner. As long as he looks OK, stressed but OK then I would just provide the best condition for him and see.

I would advice treatment right away if there is no optimal place where he can go (DT have healthy Gigantea in it) and the QT is sub-optimal. In that case, he cannot be keep in QT tank for long, then tratmetn in sup-optimal QT with the best light we can then transfer to DT as soon as he does not deflates for 4 days or so.

There are alway problems with medications. Best not use if not needed.

I 100% agree... this nem is NOT going into my DT because our purple has just been there for 2.5 months and is recovering beautifully so I do not want to mess with that one. This QT has 135W of LEDs and is beaming light on this guy so that isn't an issue and I can do water changes nightly. So conditions should be just fine there, that's why I went the QT route until I can know 100% that the nem is healthy...

Minh has it spot on, I do not feel like I need to throw medicine or whatever at a problem that might not even exist... it's like humans, same idea. Why threat with penicillin if the person isn't even sick or anything.. Same with the Gig. When he shows signs of needing help, I will bring out the big guns!

8PM the lights will just go to blues, and then I will observe for deflation... being he's only 3.5-4" I should see a change real real quick. 9PM i will turn lights on and repeat nightly...

Updates in the morning. Thanks everyone for tagging along.

OK, evening update... whites are going out at the top of the hour and then blues will be on for an hour, then dark overnight.... We'll see what happens between 8-9PM. I will be looking closely for deflation... So far, nothing strange, looking great and tentacles vibrating like crazy!

For day one, I have to say he looks GREAT!

He ate mysis today at the store, so in the next couple of days I might offer a small piece of scallop soaked in Selcon and see what the reaction as... if it's anything like at the LFS it will get gobbled up.

That one does look good. I have my LFS on the lookout for one just like that for me. Hope yours continues to do well. Congrats!

Good question, he detached from that later which I was expecting, and I tried a glass tupperware with some rock in it, and overnight he's just stuck to the bottom of the tank now. Apparently, my home I made wasn't good enough for him :-)

Looking good! Why did you choose eggcrate for your gig to attach to?

Thank you!! I was surprised at how good this one looked, which is why I bought it. I certainly was prepared to walk away if the mouth was gaping and looked real real bad.

Morning update... He has attached himself to the bottom of the tank for the time being, and certainly no deflation overnight... When I turned just the blue LEDs on, he no longer is 3.5" he's probably another 2" bigger than he was yesterday......... Taking that as a good sign and that he's getting comfortable.. Pictures shortly, but so far so good.

So as I stated earlier, it certainly is bigger than it was at the LFS and in my tank while it was acclimating.. This morning when lights kicked on, it's probably almost double in size.. Nice color... What do you guys think? I'll keep watching him today and if anything doesn't look kosher I can always start cipro tonight..

Does that fact that it's bigger than it was at the LFS yesterday indicate deflating or simply acclimating? When it was smaller in size the tentacles had some more length, but so far this morning they are stubby but they seem to be getting longer as the lights are on longer. Mouth is tight as can be.

Egg crate is not a good surface for him. He needs a smoother surface.
looking good

Thank you! I just put a bigger flatter rock in there and he's hanging out on that right now... Hoping this weekend goes well and he can go into the DT early next week if all looks good.

It is normal that anemone get bigger when they get more comfortable.
I would not remove him from the bottom of the tank because I think we should disturb them a little as possible.
Now that he is attached to the rock, I would put the rock on top of the egg crate cage that you build for him. That get him high and it also unlikely that he would craw from the rock to the cage.
He looks great and very nice color.

Wow....that looks terrific xtlosx!
best of luck and hope all continues to go well :)

How long is it recommended to stay in QT before it goes into DT?
