New H. Magnifica

Got a H. Magnifica yesterday from BlueZoo. So far it has not deflated flat which is good, it does deflate where the tentacles are skinny but never flat. The mouth was gaping and a little inverted (I have pics on my main camera will upload when I have a chance) yesterday when I received it but over the course of the day it has closed up but never tight. I placed it on a flat rock at the top of my tank right under a SOL blue. Over night it moved (expected) and is now attached off the side of the rock. Here is a quick video I just took. Excuse the splashing, I am in the process of a water change so thats coming from my overflow while my pump is replenishing the tank.

So far that is the worst the mouth has looked today, much better than yesterday.

Here is a picture right after that video, I placed it originally pretty much dead center on top. It started off this morning on the front left edge and appears to be making its way across the front to the right.

Tank is over a year old.
SG - 35ppt
Alk - 8.5
Cal - 410
Mag - 1410
Temp - 79F
Nitrate - untraceable on API kit
Phos - I am waiting on reagent refills to come in.
The only algae I have is a small patch about 2x3" of valonia in my overflow so nutrients are not high.

I have my Sols running at Whites-35%, Blues and Royal Blues - 40%.

My concern right now is every now an then I see what I think is tissue coming from the mouth and you can see what I mean in the video. I do have doxcy and cipro on hand but I would rather not rush to that if it is not need and add more stress to it. I have my female clown contained so it will not harass the anemone, my male just looks at and if I see any signs that it will go in or start nipping at the tentacles I will remove him also.

Thanks

I forgot to mention that it also let out some white smoke yesterday about an hour after it was placed in the display tank.

I bought one from Blue Zoo as well. It didn't ship well and died unfortunaely.

Good luck with yours. Hopefully this won't be another one of the countless threads of "Should I try another Magnifica?"

Best of luck. I ordered two Gigs from BZ. Won't be ordering another anemone from them again. Hope yours does well though! :)

I picked one up this past Saturday and so far its doing good, still acclimating to my lights. I had to remove two of my six t5's to get him to come out. When it gets tired of the light it hides. Once the daylight go out, it starts to come out again. It stays out longer every day, so I added one more t5.

Mine also spit out a white clump shortly after placing in my tank, it might have been food. I read that they like to be wedged between rocks, mine moved until it found one. Here's a pic.

Mine did not ship well and perished a few days after I received it.

I had not thought of ordering another one, and was thinking of giving up on this species all together. Then last week a local posted 2 for sale that has been in his tank for a while. I debated it and got pictures of it and started asking a lot of questions on them. The pictures showed two healthy ritteri anemones. So I picked up one yesterday.

Here it is in the acclimation bucket about an 1.5 hours after it was removed from his tank. This shows the mouth at its most openly state since I have had it (including thru this morning)

I dripped it for an a total of an hour and a half. I lowered my Tunzes to 30% but kept the 2 second pulse and placed it in the tank. My clowns were all over it. I have yet to see it in a deflated state, have seen some tenticles go a little skinny but go back to normal within minutes.

And here is a iPhone video (so excuse the color) of the flow I have at 30%.

The anemone has not moved since I placed it on that rock yesterday about 5:30PM EST. I will gradually increase the flow over then day or so.

Thanks and I agree. Kind of wish I never thought of trying to order one online. I keep having my wife check in on it seeing she is home and sending me pics of it pretty much hourly. Can't wait to get home.

Thanks, Snake if I remember you did a round of antibiotics on yours, what was going on with it?

Morning update: still has not deflated. When I feed the tank last night I did see it grab and hold onto some mysis but could not tell if it actually brought it to its mouth.

I will apologize online in six months if I am wrong, but you can not keep an anemone alive under LEDs. H. Mags are incredibly hardy when healthy, but my experience so far is that it will lose color slowly and ultimately die under LEDs.

Any LED.

Again if I am wrong and you keep him alive for 6 months I promise I will apologize and admit I was wrong over and over.

In fact, in an attempt to negate my hypothesis I will recommend feeding large chunks of salmon with the skin on as often as the anemone will take it.

Joe, theres already threads on RC that people have kept them under LED for longer than 6 months.

Bradleym is one of them. There are other that also have had great success with LEDs and Gigs also.

i have had two magnificas under 2 AI Sols for 8 months now. they are doing just fine and look the same as under a 400w radium. but believe me, i was very hesitant at switching over from halides....

When I recieved the mag it looked great, but all the stories I have read here I didn't want to chance it.This was my first attempt at owning one of these.I tried to nurse one back that the lfs let me have, but had gone to the point of no return.Glad to see yours doing good.

Mag under Vertex Illumina, 1.5 years. Was under a 150w halide before. Color has improved under Illumina imo.

My BTA tank has been running on LEDS for over 2 years. Started with AIs, traded them out for another Illumina a little over a year ago. BTAs are thriving.

Still no deflation, but the mouth is not completely closed and has not been, the female keeps diving in at the mouth. I am almost ready to remove her for a little bit. The mouth is not huge maybe opened about the size of a dime to nickel in size.

Woke up this morning to it partially balled up. I feed it a 1/4" piece of krill a day ago, gonna pick up some scallops this weeken to feed.
