New Instant Ocean ?

Well, if their EU branch claims to have had Mg++ 1250-1350 ppm for a long time but people in US have measured <1200 ppm something doesn't compute ;)

I agree.

Just got done testing

SG - 1.026 (refract)
CA - 420 Salifert
Alk - 10 Salifert
MG - 1400 Salifert

Wow. How long ago did you purchase the bag/bucket?

Any way to tell the "new" stuff that out there, from the "old" stuff?

I got it from Dr Fosters about a month ago. I opened it prematurely and tested this morning after reading this thread. My other bucket is about 6 months old. I have never tested the old bucket because IO has always been deficient. So I have always just mixed and supplemented. I'm going to mix up a batch of the old & test for S&G.

ksed,

Thanks :thumbsup:

So, are they lying or do they really manufacture slightly different mix for the EU market?

May be a little of both:D

IO salt assay by Craig Bingman, using ICPMS, in 1999.

Ca++ = 361

Mg ++ = 1264

IO assay by IA, using ICPMS, in 2005

Ca++ = 340

Mg++ = 1400

Ron Shimek's assay from 2002 tested by AM TEST LABORATORIES, INC. using ICP

Ca++ = 400

Mg++ = 1400

other assays we say are untrusted

ICP method
Ca++ = 372 - 425 avg 398

Mg ++ = 1273 - 1296 avg 1284

ISE method
Ca++ = 206 - 503, avg 374

Mg ++ = 1084 - 1358, avg 1221

The only way to verify anyhting here is to test a salt you have with 2 trusted test kis, record the numbers and send a split sample to ENC Labs to see what they get.

I feel the ELOS kits are very accurate so long as they are >1year old. The Ca has the capability to measure in 50ppm increments and an additional precision bottle that can measure in 10ppm increments. I think you were asking for the precision, not the accuracy of the test kit. Right?

Yes, I worded it wrong. I meant what ppm increments does is give readings in? For the Ca kit does it come with the 10 ppm bottle or do have to get it seperately?

That bottle you buy separate.

The standard kit you get from Elos today measures in 25 ppm increments. You can cut that down to 12.5 by doubling the water sample but you will use twice as much reagent.

Thanks for the input patsfan. Looks like you got close to what I got.

Are you serious? I just bought a new kit from PremiumAquatics about 2 months ago with the Bottle C (50ppm) & Bottle D (10ppm). I must have just bought the last of the older version. The expiration date was over a year out (don't have it in front of me). If this is the case, I might have to reconsider Salifert Ca kits in the future.

Billy are these numbers going to be updated on the first post? I'm real close to ordering some because the parameters are really close to my salt that cost twice as much. :)

So three people are all reporting similar numbers so far?

No, you actually have the current test kit. The "older" kits were just ABC - new ones are ABCD.

Thanks ifisch, I haven't purchased one recently. I think it is good that they added "D". This will make the kit much more attractive. And will go farther for the money. :)

I will get the Brightwell numbers posted, but will wait another week or so on the IO numbers. I'd hate to start a stir, but it looks like I already have. :o

I just keep hearing the voices "we haven't changed the formula of IO "

I do believe my numbers are correct or at least close. :)

Well tonight or tomorrow I'm gonna get a box or a bucket and I'll post the results of my tests. If it doesent work out my neighbor will use it.

If you look at the European web of IO ,your #'s fall very close to theirs.

I would have never even considered buying an ELOS kit if you had to purchase the 10ppm reagent seperately. I have not really been a big fan of there kits so far, I don't know why people like them over Salifert, or even API for some things.

If I am correct, you only used one Elos kit. And if I remember, you liked it - but thought it took too many steps.

I have both, API and Elos. Had a Salifert Alk - but the numbers literally rubbed off the 1ml syringe - took it back and got Elos.

No customer support for Salifert - Elos has their own dedicated forum, in which I can ask questions about certain kits/steps. Elos has wonderful US customer service.

Yes I only own the Mg kit. Which is a very time consuming kit IMO. There is a few other things I have read about some of the others that I am not a big fan of, mostly the low reslution (ie 50ppm increments or .5dkh ). Its OK but I think I like Salifert better. Maybe I just had to high expectations going in because of all the rave reviews I read.
