New Instant Ocean ?

Yes I only own the Mg kit. Which is a very time consuming kit IMO. There is a few other things I have read about some of the others that I am not a big fan of, mostly the low reslution (ie 50ppm increments or .5dkh ). Its OK but I think I like Salifert better. Maybe I just had to high expectations going in because of all the rave reviews I read.

Well Ca has increments of 25ppm and 10ppm for low-resolution testing.

I am not going to persuade you one way or the other, that's up to you, but Elos kits for the most part are on par or marginally better than Salifert. If I remember correctly (which may be wrong) overall, there's quite a few Salifert users switching over to Elos, versus Elos users switching over to Salifert.

I don't know if this is due to the "unknown" and "must try" like you did, but I get a feel overall, that Elos makes high quality kits.

The qulity seems good, its just odd, I have done about 5-6 tests with my Mg kit and every single time I get 1400ppm. I haven't dosed Mg based on that. With my Salifert kit it was never that high and I always dosed. I just can't understand how my Mg level is that accurate with out dosing, when it never was before. I have not changed salt or anything else. I do use Reef Crystals which is high in Mg but I was using it prior as well. And I tested a fresh batch of my Reef Crystals which also read 1400ppm, which seems to make perfect sense. Except for that fact that that would mean I have zero demand for Mg in my tank. And why did I have to dose to maintain that level proir to switching test kits? It just seems odd to me.

I guess that means one is accurate, and one is not. Problem, how do you know which one it is.

I would go with your "gut".

If the "new" IO is the same stuff as the "old" RC, then you can tell for sure by the dreaded brown sludge in your container.

Well, I didn't use it long enough to check for the brown sludge.

Also, when did this thread turn into a Salifert vs Elos thread

Back on track please. You guys all know I prefer Salifert. Customer service or no customer service. :D

Okay, it's only been about two hours since mixing. I just couldn't resist. All Salifert tests

Sg 1.025
Ca 345
Alk 9.9
Mg 1110
Temp 79.5f

It is a small 10 gallon box with the newer logo. The bar code on the bottom reads
SS15-10 08/08

The little printed number reads 17A 311

Looks close to the old numbers

Billy have many people confirmed the "New" RC numbers? and how many need to do so till you feel comfortable posting it?

Kc3

New IO 200g box
20g mixed for 12 hrs
35ppt
alk - 12.2 Salifert, 11 Sera
ca - 420 API
mag - 1290 Salifert

I must have gotten a old box. I'm still bothered by the obvious change in the elements from the old and Aquarium Systems denying change. They said the same to me when I called about the RC box I bought.

Kc, I really wouldn't sweat it. Sometimes these manufacturers would rather not advertise changes, especially if they are for the good. Remember RC & IO together sell more salt then any other brand. I don't blame them for staying out of the lime light.

I am extremely pleased with the new IO and RC numbers. I think IO and RC users should be as well. Just less to supplement which is always a good thing. :)

I know I'm probably stressing too much about it. I dose anyway. I may switch to RC again. These tough times are forcing me to re-evaluate the cost of D+D that is why I am active on this thread again. RC and IO are cheap and readily availible locally that is why I'm focused on them. I find myself re-reading the whole thread again looking for the salt with param's close to what I like and cheaper than D+D.

I am also looking into Seachem salts as well so any Seachem users can chime in with their thoughts please do.

Thanks again for your help.

I might switch to IO from RC if those numbers turn out to be the "new" values. I would be happy if it turns out to be the case.

So would many others. :D

Been using IO & RC with low Ca and Mg #'s for years.... DIY 2-Part is cheap, but the low profiles of the toxic metals in these salts is amazing. Why does so many stress about Ca, dKh & Mg?

New 200gal box IO
50gal mixed 24 hrs
35ppt (Vital Sines, Sybon)
Ca 400 (ELOS)
dKh 10 (API)
Mg 1235 (Salifert)

ow profiles of the toxic metals in these salts is amazing

I have brought this up before DW but nobody wants to listen :) If one looks at the new SeaChem, for example, it is loaded with more HM than any of them that have had a full assay. :)

Well, it is just a good thing to keep track of DW. Of course there are other things to worry about like salinity, temperature, nutrient control, lighting etc. but if you keep the big three within the recommended range, you have a pretty good chance of success. :)

Thanks for the numbers DW. Pretty much confirms what I got.
