New Instant Ocean ?

Before everyone gets crazy, let me first say that according to Aquarium Systems (Marineland), they have not changed the formula of Instant Ocean.

Well, unless I'm an idiot (which is not out of the question), the Instant Ocean I just tested was quite different from what I have listed in my salt mix thread.

Before I ask for the IO numbers to be changed, I'd like to here from the masses. Those of you that use Instant Ocean, please verify my numbers. I'm mainly concerned about the calcium and magnesium numbers. Alkalinity hasn't changed much.

I just tested a new batch of IO and got the following

Calcium = 400
Alkalinity = 11
Magnesium = 1350 :eek1:

I do not want to start any conspiracy theories, but the new IO kinda looks like the old RC :confused:

Instant Ocean users please post and tell me what specific gravity, how you measure and which brand calcium test kit.

Thanks guys. :thumbsup:

Numbers look fairly good to me, except the dKH. But I don't know much about the complexities of salt.

Would you agree?

Hopefully some people will chime in soon and we will know whats going on.

Was this a new bag of IO you tested?

I've had a fresh batch mixing for about 4 hours.

1.025 (refractometer)
Ca 450 (Elos)
Mg 1450 (Elos)
Alkalinity 3.6 meq/L (LaMotte)

# on the box & bag: 24 G 311

I am on my last bucket of Reef Crystal. If the numbers posted above are correct then I might order a couple of the "new" IO 200g boxes which is on sale right now at DFS for $39.99.

Just out of curiosity what is the accuracy of those Elos kits. I know the Mg kit has a 50 ppm range, what does the Ca have?

I got ca 380, Mg 1300, dKH 10 on the last bucket purchased a few months ago. have yet to test the new bucket purchased last week.

I thought the low magnesium was fixed in IO long time ago? Or is there something else different now?

No it wasn't. It's been around 1100 ppm for as long as I can remember. That is why I am so surprised.

Keep it coming guys and gals. :)

That chart has been there for as long as I can remember.
ksed,

Thanks :thumbsup:

So, are they lying or do they really manufacture slightly different mix for the EU market?

I feel the ELOS kits are very accurate so long as they are >1year old. The Ca has the capability to measure in 50ppm increments and an additional precision bottle that can measure in 10ppm increments. I think you were asking for the precision, not the accuracy of the test kit. Right?

If they do, then how did it end up in Indiana (Billy's home state)?

Well, if their EU branch claims to have had Mg++ 1250-1350 ppm for a long time but people in US have measured <1200 ppm something doesn't compute ;)
