New lighting maroon clowns

Anyone see how deformed the new lighting maroon clowns that are up for sale are? They look like freshwater parrot fish with those goofy heads. Their markings dont look anything like lighting either. More like paint spatter like the black snowflake clowns. Sad that they don't look anything like the original wild lightnigh Maroon clowns. I get that they are rare and all but really?

These would've been culled in the 80's by a responsible fish breeder. I worked at a CA LFS back then and some mis bars would get through and sold for 30% less than "normal" clowns.

Now they slap a "rare" moniker to the pic and find some sap/s with more money than good sense. But hey, whatever folks want to spend their money on...more power to em.

These are being sold simply to make a solid gene pool for the lightning clowns, of they were culled like what would have been done had they been normal maroons the gene pool wouldn't be very big at all. Hopefully the next batches raise have better reading conditions so not as many are deformed.

The lightning pattern is supposed to become more developed with age, but as of now that is just a guess. I can see it happening, similar to how onyx take time for the black to fill in.

Hopefully in the future we can see some more respectable looking fish in better form than these. I like some of the marking and color morphs of designer clowns but all is lost in my opinion when the fins and body shape isn't natural.

5300 dollars is disgusting as cool as these guys are, I can't believe it actually took this long to get these to breed I know the maroons are the most aggressive but really how long has Pederson been at this over a year I think. But hey on the bright side at least there not being over harvested and killed by inexperienced aquarist... Or maybe they have been over harvested if the parents were the only 2 in the ocean. Lol sorry for my rant it is very cool that they are finally at market but come in that price is outrageous for any of us that are not independently wealthy.

Keep in mind that the lightning maroon he has went through several bouts of infections. The pair was also irregular in their spawning, speaking of they aren't spawning right now. Matt is also a busy person, things have set him back on the release of these fish. The two Matt has are far from being the only two in the ocean, I believe there are some wild lightning maroons in the ocean as well around PNG. PNG, however, does not have an open collecting station.

Also bear in mind that the likely bidders are breeders or breeding companies (ORA, Sustainable Aquatics, ProAquatix, etc.) who have plenty of money to buy these fish. These fish aren't being purchased for the average hobbyist's reef tank, or at least many don't think they are. The deformities were allowed to be sold because they are for the purpose of putting a gene pool in place for this color variation.

Good point about the bidders being big breeders hopefully one of them gets them so they can be available to the avg reef keepers like us.

I honestly hope its not ora....we have been getting there maroon clowns in at work up until now that are crap...they can't swim and they are deformed sometimes....I don't think ora is worried about there quality anymore but I would lobe to see sustainable develop them further for sure

Sustainable is starting to decline in quality as well, IMO. Many of the SA ones that come in to the LFSs here are getting quite pug faced...

The original WC lightning went to a breeder in MN, Matt Pedersen. He got the lightning maroon through Blue Zoo, and is in turn selling them some of the offspring to them for them to sell.

..... but really how long has Pederson been at this over a year I think.

Actually, 3 years. and yes while there have been setbacks it is frustrating to see how long it took for them to finally breed. In fact, as is stated on his blog, he didn't know how to get them to breed and it was only after tips from Mitch May from Booyah's Clowns that got them to go. It takes some skills to breed clowns over the phone from 600 miles away!

Another topic which I find quite irritating with these fish - I have received several emails from CORAL magazine drumming up interest in these fish. Other than the fact that the owner is a CORAL contributor, why? I know they are cool looking fish, but what is so amazing about taking 3 years to breed some maroon clowns? If I had a really cool pair of fish would they do free advertising for me?
