Recieved my Nikon D40 today w/ my two lens kit. Took some pics of my pup after our walk. It was getting darker out and the outside one didn't turn out great but I need to learn more how to use it. Any tips.

I'm only adding 4 pics now but will be adding more as I take then over the next couple days.

I'm not sure if I should just shoot in RAW (NEF) or fine jpeg. I don't do much post shot editing and really don't want to have to use the Nikon software all the time

I will take some reef related ones but wanted to try out my cutest subject first :D

wow Nice pics already! well you don't have to shoot RAW all the time, it's just that with RAW, you have that extra "safety net" just in case you blow a highlight, used the wrong white balance, etc. it can be fixed easily.

The good thing about JPG is that 1. they take less space in your card, and 2. your camera can fire faster because JPGs don't fill up the buffer as quick as RAW files do.

Think about it like this... JPEGs are like those kids in the gym.. picks up a 10lb DB and does like 20 quick jerking curls. RAW is like the guy who only does 8 reps, but in great form, and until failure. Quality over quantity ;)

this is what Im about- I always shoot in RAW. If you want optimal post processing then it is a must. Im working towards making each exposure count- then there is no waste.
If you want to use your cam like point and shoot- snap.. snap..then using JPEGS is fine and definitely has its benefits. Alot of it will have to do with what you intend to do with your photos.

Thanks for posting your pics- Eve looks like a champ. Your shots look good- the reddish hue of your skin on the inside shots with the flash could be reduced with some minor RAW work.

I like to try to find natural light to work with and go without the flash for the majority of the time (It has its uses of course..) I believe utilizing natural light will allow photographers more room to get creative.

xtm - Great analogy. I'll shoot in RAW. I guess why not I have the capabilities and like klepto sort of pointed out it would basicalyl be like using it for point and shoot. This camera is not intended for that.

I'll just use their simple software to conver them to jpeg's for postin and such. I'm just wondering if I want to pop pics up on my moms computer (say I got a great shot I want to show her) can I do that w/out downloading the software on her computer?

Hope to get some pics in the natural sunlight like klepto suggested. Last night it was too dark after our walk and by the time I got the camera up and running.

Yes, the D40 gives you an option to shoot RAW+JPG so it produces both files in one shot. You can then give her the JPG and you can keep the RAW file.

ibanezgfx - SHE (sorry she's all girl...a true diva named Eve) is most likely 100%. No papers, I know the breeder but I go her through the pit rescue that I volunteer for. She is the most sweet, googy, lovabull little one ever. We are currently training her for Search and Rescue and hope to pass certification in April.

Thank you for the compliment. I would hate to miss one day w/out her. Lucky for me she's only 2.

Personally those dogs scare me but he looks so cool!

I'm saddend and sorry to hear this :( Unfortunatly there are FAR too many dumb owners out there that ill treat, abuse, neglect, and unsocialize thier animals (of any breed or type). Also, it doesn't help that the media sensationalizes this also and hypes up everything. Truth is that they are the MOST human friendly dog EVER. They are the only breed that can say that there was absolutely no human aggression or protection built into them...so this just even more so shows how bad some owner screwed them up. They are a very social dog that loves and NEEDS human companionship and loving care.

Too many people grab them because of the look or the stigma and want some "bad arse" dog. Truth is they are big lovie mushheads. These idiots treat thier animals bad or don't love and socialize them and they are the problem NOT THE DOG! I have her because I volunteer for a rescue in which we only take in American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT's) and only the good ones. Not every dog (of any breed) deserves a chance. We well socialize and train our animals and they are amazing ambassidors for the tbreed and K9's in general. We (the rescue) is here to educate people as yourself...and anyone for that matter on the TRUE APBT.

Heck Eve my dog has almost passed the Canine Good Citizen test (an AKC test) only failing separation anxiety...she loves dad too much. Also, we are training and will certify as a Search and Rescue dog. We have taken over 9 obedience, agility, and/or mannors classes. I am out there to make my dog the best dog of breed and help people realize that they are not vicious killers like the media makes them out to be.

Lunchbucket,

She's insanely cute. Good to see you care so much about our doggy frands. I'm a dog lover too and I think you can learn most of what you need to know about a person by how they treat animals or how smarter animals, like dogs, react to them. It sickens mean how Pit Bulls are treated by most owners...it's great to see someone fighting the good fight.

surge - Suharsanoi (sp?)

Tremont - Thanks! Dogs can't speak so we must do it for them! It is just sick and wrong. These people supposedly love their animals yet they throw them into the ring to get tore up and treat them bad if they loose. What trash. I can't imagine if they "love" their dog and do that to them if they love their kids would they do the same?

I love my dog like a kid. Heck my world revolves around her and her training. It's absolutely amazing to see her find a victim doing search and rescue. It has brought tears to my eyes more than once and we are just training. Finding the victim after leaving the trail for 9hrs and being 500+ft is something that I'm far to proud of and it makes me swell up and feel great.

She WILL be a good ambassador for every k9. She WILL be therapy dog certified and will go to schools for kids with reading disabilities to read to. We WILL make a positive impact on everyone that we meet.
